19章　逃げ出すエリヤ

1．エリヤの弱さ

エリヤは、異教の預言者との対決で勝利し、彼らをキション川に連れ下り、そこで彼らを殺しました。ところが、これを知ったアハブ王の妻イゼベルは、悔い改めるどころか、激しく怒り、エリヤへの殺意を燃やし、エリヤに復讐を果たそうとするのです。イゼベルは神の絶対的な力を示されても、神を恐れることは全くありませんでした。すると、エリヤは、イゼベルの激しい怒りに、逆に動転してしまうのです。それまでは、ただ一人、神以外の何物をも恐れず、力強く神の裁き司として立っていたエリヤでしたが、彼は現実に目を覚まされ、しっぽを巻いて逃げてしまったわけです。

ここはエリヤもまた「私たちと同じような人」（ヤコブ5:21）と呼ばれる重要なポイントです。風を見たペテロのように、彼もまた海に沈みかける自分を感じたのです。ただ一人、巨大な国家と信仰ただ一つで立ち向かっている現実、それは、国家の陰謀に嵌められたヒーローを描くハリウッド映画のような筋書きを思い浮かべるところですが、エリヤは、やはり神の人です。彼は、人間として動揺することはあっても、神を見失うような人ではありませんでした。彼はどこまでも、神を求めていくのです。そして荒野に一日の道のりを入って行き、そしてエニシダの木の陰にたどり着きました。

2．死を願うエリヤ

そんな彼に、神は直ぐには答えられませんでした。疲れて眠ってしまった彼に、み使いが触れ食料を与えています。しかし彼は再び眠ってしまいます。心も体も消耗しきったエリヤ、その様は全く人間らしいではありませんか。そこにもう一度主の御使いが彼に触れて、指示を与えるのです。彼はその指示に従い、モーセと同じように、神を目の当たりにし、神と語り合う恵みに与るのです。

私たちも同じように、心も体も消耗し、ノンストップのストレス下で、心は泣きながらも神の御心を求め、神の御心がわからぬままにただ人生を先に進んでいく他ない状況というもほはあるものでしょう。神の答えはそんなに簡単には見つからないものです。その日一日を生き延びることが精一杯、家に帰れば倒れ伏して寝るだけ、幾日も無為に時が過ぎていくだけの人生を余儀なくされることがあるものです。

ただ神は、アハブを恐れなかったエリヤに、ケリテ川でパンと水を与えて養われましたが、神は、イゼベルを恐れ逃げ出し落ち込んでいるエリヤにも、同じようにされました。神は、エリヤが大胆で勇敢で従順な勝利者であった時と、そうでない時も変わらぬ扱いをされているのです。この世の社会では、うまく仕事をすれば評価されますが、失敗すれば仕事を取り上げられ、外され、仕舞には首を切られることもあるでしょう。ですから人は、始終上司の顔色を見る緊張関係の中で、仕事をしているものです。しかし、神はそのようなことはなさらないのです。神の愛と真実さはとこしえに変わることがなく、神が私たちを見捨てられることはありません。大切なのは、ヤコブがペヌエルの経験をしたように、神にどこまでもしがみついて、次の指示を仰ぐことです。

エリヤも天来のパンで力づけられ、次の指示を求めて立ち上がりました。エリヤは神の山ホレブへと着きます。ホレブは、イスラエル人には霊感を得る場所として知られていた場所です。風、地震、火これは、いずれも神の顕現の象徴的現象です。しかし、そのたびに著者は「その中に主はおられなかった」と言います。それは、主が肉眼の目には見えない霊の存在であることを言うものでしょう。けれども主は実在する、そして声を聞かせてくださる、つまりご自身のみこころを示されるお方です。エリヤは巨大国家に、ただ一人立ち向かっていたわけではなく、神と共に彼が立っていたことを改めて確信させられていくのです。ただ、エリヤは、もはや一人では立てない、とその心を神に伝えます。すると神はこの心を汲んでエリヤに強力な助け手エリシャを与える約束を与えられました。何とも自分の心細さ、心の動揺を、あるがままに神に話すことを励まされるところです。まことに生きておられる神に信頼して、私たちの思いを告げ、あらゆる困難において、主の助けを確信することといたしましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 19 Elijah running away

1. Elijah’s weakness

Elijah won the confrontation with the pagan prophets and took them down the Kishon River, where they were killed. However, instead of repenting, Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab, became angry and burned her murderous intent on Elijah, trying to take her revenge on Elijah. She was never afraid of God, even though Jezebel showed the absolute power of God. Then Elijah is upset by the fierce anger of her Jezebel. Until then, Elijah was the only one who was not afraid of anything other than God and stood as a powerful judge of God, but he was awakened to reality and ran away with his tail wrapped around him.

This is an important point where Elijah is also called “a man like us” (James 5:21). Like Peter who saw the wind, he also felt himself sinking into the sea. The reality of confronting a huge nation and faith alone, which reminds me of a Hollywood movie-like scenario that depicts a hero in a nation’s plot, Elijah is still a man of God. .. He wasn’t the one who lost sight of God, even though he was upset as a human being. He seeks God forever. And he went down the wilderness for a day and reached the shadow of the Genisteae tree.

2. Elijah wishing for death

God couldn’t answer him right away. An angel touches and feeds him who has fallen asleep tired. But he falls asleep again. Elijah, whose mind and body are exhausted, isn’t that kind of human? Then the angel of the Lord touches him again and gives instructions. He follows his instructions and, like Moses, gives him the grace of witnessing and talking to God.

In the same way, we are exhausted both physically and mentally, and under non-stop stress, our hearts cry but seek the will of God, and we just move forward in life without knowing the will of God. There will be no other situation. God’s answer is not so easy to find. Surviving the day is all you can do, and when you get home, you just fall asleep and you may be forced to live a life that goes by for days.

But God fed Elijah, who was not afraid of Ahab, with bread and water on the Kerite River, but God did the same for Elijah, who was afraid of Jezebel and fled and was depressed. God treats Elijah the same when he was a bold, brave, and obedient victor, and when he wasn’t. In this world’s society, if you work well, you will be evaluated, but if you fail, you will be taken away from your work, removed, and you may be decapitated. Therefore, people work in a tense relationship where they see the complexion of their boss from beginning to end. But God does not do that. God’s love and truth never change, and God never abandons us. The important thing is to cling to God forever and ask for the following instructions, as Jacob experienced in Penuel.

Elijah was also empowered by the heavenly bread and stood up for the next instruction. Elijah arrives at Horeb, the mountain of God. Horeb is a place known to the Israelites as an inspirational place. Wind, earthquake, fire These are all symbolic phenomena of the manifestation of God. But each time, the author says, “There was no Lord in it.” It would say that the Lord is a spiritual being that is invisible to the naked eye. But the Lord is the one who is real and who speaks, that is, who shows his will. Elijah was not alone in confronting the giant nation, but was reassured that he was standing with God. However, Elijah tells God that he can no longer stand alone. Then God took this heart and gave Elijah a promise to give him a powerful helper, Elisha. He is encouraged to speak to God as he is, about his delicacy and upset. Let us trust in God who is truly alive, tell us our thoughts, and be convinced of the Lord’s help in all difficulties.
