20章　アハブとアラムの王

1．イスラエルとアラムの戦い

神は、旱魃による飢饉を通して、ご自身の存在を知らせようとしました（19章）。続いて神は、ご自身の存在をわからせるために、戦争を用いられます。この時代、イスラエルは、アラムの軍事力に脅かされていました。実際アラムの王ベン・ハダド1世は、北王国との同盟を破棄、南ユダ王国アサの要請に応じて、イスラエル北部に侵入し町々を略奪しています（1列王15:20）。また続くベン・ハダド2世は、さらに全軍を率いてサマリヤを包囲し、イスラエルの王アハブに従属を要求するのです。しかしアハブは、戦争を準備することと、戦争に勝つこととは別ものだとし、強気に応じるのです（11節）。ただそれは明らかにはったりで、彼は勝ち目のない戦争を強いられる結果となったわけです。そこで神は、この機会に、ご自身の存在を明らかに示そうとされました。神は預言者を遣わします。まさに渡りに船（lifesaver)でした。アハブは、預言者の助言に従うのです。預言者の勧めによって招集された兵士は232人。正規軍の数は１万人とされましたから、これもまた、ギデオンの戦いのような少数の選びの者による戦いで（士師7:2）、まさに神の助けによる奇跡的な勝利となったのです。この戦いを通して神は、ご自身のことばが真実であることを示されたのです。

2．二回目の戦い、明らかな神への挑戦

翌年、再び戦争の危機が生じました。しかもそれは、明らかに、イスラエルの神に対する挑戦となる戦争でした。「彼らの神々は山の神です。だから彼らは私たちより強いのです。しかし、私たちが平地で彼らと戦うなら、きっと私たちのほうが彼らより強いでしょう（23節）」と。ハダドは、平地で戦うことを要求しました。戦場は、ダマスコからイスラエルに向かう途上、ヤルムク川とヨルダン川が合流する地点の側、ガリラヤ湖東方のアフェクと考えられています。アラムはイスラエルの心臓部にかなり食い込んだ、戦いを要求したことになります。イスラエルはかなり危機的状況に追い込まれていたということです。しかし聖書の神は、ハダデが考えるような山の神ではありませんでした。イスラエルの正規軍は約1万人ですから、アラムの歩兵10万人を打ち殺した（29節）ことも、また27,000人の生き残りのアラム軍が崩れ落ちた城壁で全滅してしまったことも、神の介入なしには考えられないことです。しかし、それでもアハブは神を認め、神に従うことをしませんでした。むしろ彼は、せっかく捕らえたハダデと取引をし、奪われた町の返還とダマスコでの市場権益の確保を条件にハダデを逃がすのです。これは後に、致命的なミスとなって、跳ね返ってくることになります。

預言者エリヤを通して、アハブを描く1列王記の記事は、歴代誌にはないものです。しかも、アハブは異邦人の王であるとしたら、神がなぜアハブをそれまでのイスラエル人の王と同じように扱われたのか。神が万人の神であると言うほかないでしょう。神は、アハブが神を信じない者であることを承知の上で、さらにその出身、家柄、育ちとは全く関係なく、アハブを助けられました。神はユダヤ人を選びの民としましたが、実際には、神はいかなる人種的な差別もせず人間の歴史に介入されたのです。ユダヤ人を選ばれたのも、ユダヤ人が優れた民ということではなく、ユダヤ人を通して全人類を救うという、全人類に対する愛の故でした。となれば、神は、私たち一人ひとりとも関係を結んでくださる方であるということです。無名の私たちにもご自身の力を現してくださることを信じてまいりましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 20 Ahab and the King of Aram

1. Battle of Israel and Aram

God sought to announce his existence through a drought famine (chapter 19). God then uses war to reveal his own existence. During this time, Israel was threatened by Aram’s military power. In fact, King Ben Hadad I of Aram abandoned his alliance with the Northern Kingdom and, at the request of Asa, the Kingdom of South Judah, invaded northern Israel and plundered the towns (1 Kings 15:20). Then Ben Hadad II led his entire army to siege Samaria and demand subordination from King Ahab of Israel. But Ahab responds bullishly, saying that preparing for a war is not the same as winning a war (ver. 11). But that was clearly a bluff, and he was forced into an unwinnable war. So God took this opportunity to reveal his own existence. God sends a prophet. It was just a lifesaver. Ahab follows the advice of the Prophet. 232 soldiers were convened at the recommendation of the Prophet. With 10,000 regular troops, this was also a miraculous victory with the help of God in a battle of a small number of choices, such as the Battle of Gideon (Judges 7: 2).  Through this battle God has shown that his own words are true.

2. Second battle, obvious challenge to God

The following year, the crisis of war broke out again. And it was clearly a challenging war against the God of Israel. “Their gods are Gods of the hills. That is way they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they (ver. 23).” Hadad demanded to fight on level ground. The battlefield is believed to be Aphek, east of the Sea of ​​Galilee, on the way from Damascus to Israel, on the side of the confluence of the Yarmouk and Jordan rivers. Aram has demanded a fight, which has digged into the heart of Israel. Israel was in a very critical situation. But the Bible God was not the mountain god that Hadad thinks. Since Israel’s regular army is about 10,000, killing of 100,000 Aram infantry (verse 29) and the annihilation of 27,000 surviving Aram troops on the collapsed walls, it is unthinkable without intervention of God. However, Ahab nevertheless acknowledged God and did not obey Him. Rather, he deals with Hadad, who has been captured, and escapes Hadad on the condition that the deprived town is returned and market interests are secured in Damascus. This would later become a fatal mistake and bounce back.

The article of Kings in Ahab through the Prophet Elijah is unheard of in Chronicles. Moreover, if Ahab was a Gentile king, why did God treat Ahab the same as the previous Israelite kings? You can only say that God is the God of all. God helped Ahab, knowing that Ahab was a disbelief, and regardless of his origin, family, or upbringing. God chose the Jews as his people, but in reality, He intervened in human history without any racial discrimination. The Jews were chosen not because they were good people, but because of their love for all mankind, to save them all through them. Then, God is the one who has a relationship with each of us.
