21章　取り上げられた畑（ナボテ）

１．アハブとイゼベルの罪

世の中には、強い者が弱い者を力でねじ伏せてしまう、人の権利が無下に踏みにじられてしまう、そんな不幸な現実があるものです。ここに書かれた事件もその一例でしょう。しかし、神は人の目には見えませんが、確かに生きておられ、どんな悪も見過ごされることはありません。

アハブは、イズレエル人ナボテが所有するぶどう畑を気に入り、自分の野菜畑にしたいと考えました。そしてアハブはそれ相当の代価で彼に譲るように頼んだのです。一般に、ぶどう畑は野菜畑には適していないと言われますが、気まぐれなアハブには一向にかまわぬことだったのでしょう。ところが、ナボデは、王の申し出を断りました。ナボデにとって、その土地は神からいただいたもの、国王といえども譲るものではなかった、と考えたのです（3節）。

この結果にアハブは、ふてくされ、食事も取ろうとしませんでした。そこで妻のイゼベルが、まるで子どものような王のために動くのです。彼女は、異邦人で、神を畏れることなく、イスラエル人とは全く異なる価値観を持っていました。彼女は、土地は神のものではなく、王のもの、地上の支配者のものと考えていました。そしてイゼベルはただの女ではありません。邪悪な女でした。彼女は、イスラエルの掟を逆手に取って、合法的にナボデの土地を手にするのです。つまりイスラエルの律法に則って、彼女は最小限の証人を立て（レビ24:10-16）、ナボデが神と王を冒涜した罪で処刑したのです。しかも相続手段である「買い戻しの権利（kinsman-redeemers）」が適用できないように、ナボデの子らも葬り去りました。こうして相続者のいなくなった土地として、ナボテのぶどう畑は自動的に国王のものとなりました。

2．神は盲目ではない

表面上は、合法的に見えても、神はイゼベルの邪悪な計画を見過ごされることはありませんでした。神は、誰も阻止し得ない人間の不正と圧力を決してそのままにしておくことはありません。神はエリヤを遣わされます。かつてイゼベルを恐れ、弱腰になったエリヤでしたら、彼は再びサマリヤからイズレエルにある王宮へと下っていきました。生ける神が共におられるという確信があればこそできることでした。悪事の首謀者はイゼベルでしたが、神はアハブにその罪を問われました。たとえアハブが直接手をくださなかったとしても、イゼベルをなすがままにしたアハブは同罪なのです。ただ、神は冷徹な裁き主ではありません。罪を指摘されたアハブが後悔しへりくだると、神は災いを思いなおされるのです。このように悪人を見捨てず、また悔い改めの機会を与えられる、神の愛に注目しましょう。

もちろん、神を認めぬアハブとイゼベルは結果的には滅ぼされてしまうのですが、神は、悔い改めのチャンスを幾度もお与えになりました。そしてアハブがへりくだるとそれを受け止められました。神は悪いことをすれば裁き、良いことをすれば報われる、と単純に行動するようなお方ではないのです。神は人の心の動きを見守りながら、相応しい対応を取られるのです。

現在世界の人口は約70億と言われます。私たちには、群なす鳥の一つ一つを見分けるのは難しいことです。しかし神は、無数の人間を、天から群れとして見ているわけではありません。神の目は無数の中の一人ひとりの心と行為を識別し、その一人ひとりを、愛情をもって子として扱おうとされています。だからこそ、私たちはその神を畏れ敬わなければならないのです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 21 The field (Naboth) taken up

1. Sin of Ahab and Jezebel

There is such an unfortunate reality in the world that a strong person overwhelms a weak person with force, and a person’s rights are trampled unconditionally. The case written here is one example. But God is invisible to the human eye, but he is certainly alive and no evil is overlooked.

Ahab liked the vineyards owned by the Jezreel Naboth and wanted to make them his own vegetable vineyards. And Ahab asked him to give it up for a reasonable price. It’s generally said that vineyards aren’t suitable for vegetable fields, but it’s probably all right for the whimsical Ahab. However, Naboth declined the king’s offer. Naboth thought that the land was given by God, So he could not sell it even if the king’s wish (ver. 3). Ahab was disappointed by this result and did not try to eat. There his wife Jezebel works for a king like a child. She was a Gentile, without fear of God, and had completely different values ​​from the Israelites. She believed that the land belonged to the king, the ruler of the earth, not to God. And Jezebel is more than just a woman. She was an evil woman. She takes the commandments of Israel in the wrong direction and legally obtains the land of Naboth. So, according to the law of Israel, she set up a minimal witness (Le 24: 10-16) and executed Naboth for blaspheming God and the King. Moreover, the children of Naboth  were also buried so that the inheritance method “kinsman-redeemers” could not be applied. As a land without heirs, the Naboth vineyards automatically became the king’s.

2．God is not blind

On the surface, even though it looked legal, God did not overlook Jezebel’s evil plan. God never leaves human injustice and pressure unstoppable. God sends Elijah. Once Elijah was afraid of Jezebel and weakened, he went down again from Samaria to the royal palace in Jezreel. It was only possible if he were confident that he would have a living God with him. The mastermind of the evil was Jezebel, but God charged Ahab with it. Even if Ahab didn’t give his hand directly, Ahab who left Jezebel at his disposal is guilty. However, God is not a cold judge. When Ahab, who has been pointed out for sin, regrets and humbles himself, God reconsiders the calamity. Pay attention to God’s love, which gives him the opportunity to repent and not abandon this bad guys.

Of course, Ahab and Jezebel, who do not recognize God, will eventually be destroyed, but God has given them many opportunities to repent. And when Ahab was humble, it was accepted. God is not the one who simply acts to judge if people does bad things and to be rewarded if people does good things. God watches the movements of people’s hearts and takes appropriate measures.

Currently, the world population is said to be about 7 billion. It is difficult for us to distinguish each and every bird in the flock. But God does not see countless humans as a flock from heaven. God’s eyes identify the hearts and deeds of each and every one of the myriad, and treat each one with affection as a child. That is why we must be in awe of that God. I pray for a good day today.
