1．アハブ

アハブ王はイスラエル人ではありませんでした。イスラエル北王国には、オムリ王朝以降、非イスラエル人が王となる時代が続きます。そして、本質的にイスラエル北王国は、異教徒の国となっていくのです。しかしそれでも神はイスラエル北王国を見捨てず、またこの王たちを退けず、むしろ、まことの神の存在を知らせるために、預言者エリヤを遣わします。神は全人類の神であり、イスラエルを選ばれたのは、イスラエルを通して全人類を祝されるため、つまりは、全人類が神の救いの視野に入っているのです。

この時代イスラエル北王国は、隣国のフェニキアと外交関係を結んでいました。イスラエルは農作物を輸出し、フェニキアから手工芸品を輸入する、共存共栄の関係を保っていたのです。ですからフェニキアの王の娘イゼベルを妻として迎えたのは、外交関係を強固にする政略結婚という意味があったのでしょう。しかし、このような政略結婚は、必然的に、フェニキアの宗教であったバアル礼拝をイスラエルに持ち込むことになりました。実際、イゼベルは、イスラエルの預言者たちを皆殺しにして、バアルの預言者を立てていくのです。

非イスラエル人が王となることによって生じたイスラエルの危機的時代でした。イスラエルの伝統が全て否定され、フェニキア化されようとしていました。かつてエジプトからイスラエルを連れだし、守り導いてくださったシナイの神、天地創造の神への信仰は失われ、その状況に警告を発する預言者も失われようとしていました。しかし神は、そこでエリヤを立てるのです。そして、ご自身を力強く現されました。聖書史の中で、奇跡が集中した時代があります。モーセ、エリヤ、そしてイエスの時代です。それは、天地創造の神に対する信仰が最も危機的状況に陥った時代です。呼吸停止・心停止の人間に電気ショックを加える救急処置のように、奇跡が用いられた、と言うわけです。

2．神とはどんなお方か

最初に、自然を支配する神を明らかに示す奇跡がとりあげられます（1節）。神のことばによらなければ「露も雨も降らない」と言います。パレスチナの降雨には一定のリズムがあります。日照りで固くなった土を軟らかくする10月末からの先の雨があり、1，2月の冬の雨、そして、収穫豊かにする3、4月頃の後の雨があります。エリヤの宣告は、そのリズムを止めることができる、全被造物を支配するまことの神の存在を伝えるものでした（アモス4:7）。バアルは、パレスチナの土着の宗教であり、自然を支配し、雨をもたらし、農耕の繁栄を約束する神として信じられ崇拝されていました。アシェラ、並びにアシュタロテは、バアルの妻とされる女神で、いずれも多産豊穣の神です。このような宗教は、農耕を主体とするイスラエルには、馴染みやすく受け入れ易いものでした。そのような状況で「雨を降らせない」奇跡は、明らかに、バアル崇拝に対する挑戦であったのです。

また第二の奇跡は、ツァレファテで起こりました。「かめの粉は尽きず、つぼの油はなくならない」（16節）と、貧しいやもめの生活が守られる奇跡が起こります。最初のものに比べれば小さなものです。しかし、最初の奇跡は、既に有るものを無にすることであり、この奇跡は逆で、何も無いところから有らしめるものです。主は自由自在に、みこころのままに取り、与えるお方です。

最後の奇跡は、貧しいやもめの息子を生き返らせる奇跡です（17-24節）。人間の生死を支配し、人間の不可能性を超える神の存在が示されています。神は、有るものを無いものとし、無いものを有るものとし、いのちをも支配される。その神のことばに信頼していく、それが信仰なのです。

1. Ahab

King Ahab was not an Israeli. Since the Omri dynasty, the northern kingdom of Israel has been dominated by non-Israelis. And, in essence, the northern kingdom of Israel becomes a pagan country. But still God does not abandon the northern kingdom of Israel and does not reject these kings, but rather sends the prophet Elijah to announce the existence of the true God. God is the God of all mankind, and Israel was chosen because it celebrates all mankind through Israel, that is, all mankind is in the sight of God’s salvation.

At this time, the northern kingdom of Israel had diplomatic relations with neighboring Phoenicia. Israel maintained a co-existence and co-prosperity relationship by exporting agricultural products and importing handicrafts from Phoenicia. Therefore, having Jezebel, the daughter of the Phoenician king, as his wife probably meant a political marriage that strengthened diplomatic relations. However, such a political marriage inevitably brought Baal worship, a Phoenician religion, to Israel. In fact, Jezebel will kill all the prophets of Israel and set up Baal’s prophets.

It was a crisis time in Israel caused by the non-Israeli becoming king. All Israel　traditions were denied and were about to be Phoenicianized. Faith in the God of Sinai, the God of Creation, who once brought Israel out of Egypt and guided it, was lost, and the prophets who warned of the situation were about to be lost. But God raises Elijah there. And he revealed himself powerfully. There are times in Bible history where miracles are concentrated. It is the time of Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. It was a time when faith in the God of Creation was at its most critical. It is said that miracles were used like first aid to apply electric shock to humans with respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest.

2. What kind of person is God

First, a miracle that clearly shows the God who controls nature is taken up (ver.1). Unless it is the word of God, it says, “No dew or rain.” Palestinian rainfall has a certain rhythm. There is rain from the end of October to soften the hardened soil, winter rains in January and February, and rains after March and April to enrich the harvest. Elijah’s sentence was to convey the existence of a true God who ruled all creation that could stop the rhythm (Amos 4:7). Baal is an indigenous religion of Palestine, believed and worshiped as a god who rules nature, brings rain and promises agricultural prosperity. Ashera and Astarte are the goddesses of Baal’s wife, both of whom are prolific and fertile gods. Such religions were familiar and easy to accept in Israel, which is mainly farming. The miracle of “not raining” in such a situation was clearly a challenge to Baal worship.

The second miracle happened in Tsarefate. A miracle that protects the life of a poor widow occurs, saying, “For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry,” (ver. 16). It’s smaller than the first one. But the first miracle is to nullify what is already there, and this miracle is the opposite, to bring it from nothing. The Lord is the one who freely takes and gives as he wishes.

The last miracle is a miracle that brings the poor widow’s son back to life (ver. 17-24). It shows the existence of a God who controls human life and death and transcends human impossibility. God has what he has, what he does not have, and he rules life. Faith is to trust in the word of God.
