1．なぜ私たちは「本音の祈り」をやめてしまうのか
みなさんは、苦しいときに素直に「助けてください」と言えているでしょうか。実は、信仰生活を長く続けている人ほど、この一言を口にするのが難しいことがあります。「こんなことを祈ったら信仰が足りないと思われるのではないか」「もっと感謝しなければいけないのではないか」。そう感じてしまい、本当は苦しいのに、本音をそのまま祈れないのです。ネヘミヤ記9章は、そんな私たちに向けて「叫びを伴う祈りこそ、聖書が語る悔い改めだ」と教えてくれる章です。
2．ネヘミヤ記9章の文脈
まず、背景を整理しましょう。イスラエルの人々はバビロンの捕囚から帰還し、エルサレムの城壁を建て直しました。ここまでは順調でした。さらに8章では、律法、つまり聖書が朗読され、仮庵の祭という大きなお祭りで人々は大いに喜びました。しかしその直後、9章で人々は一転して、断食をし、荒布を身に着けて罪を告白し始めます。何が起こったのでしょうか。それは、聖書の言葉に耳を傾けることで、悔い改めを必要とする自分たちの現実に気づかされたからでした。
3．ネヘミヤ記9章の構造
では、9章の構造を見てまいりましょう。この9章には、とても長い祈りが記されていますが、その流れは驚くほど論理的です。
• 1–3節：悔い改めの集まり。聖書を読み、罪を告白し、礼拝します。ここでは「読むこと」と「悔い改めること」がセットになっています。
• 4–6節：神をほめたたえる。苦しみについて語る前に、「神は天地の創造主である」と確認します。
• 7–15節：神の救いの歴史。アブラハムの選び、出エジプト、荒野での導きなど、神が約束を守ってこられたことが祈りのうちに告白されます。
• 16–31節：イスラエルの失敗の歴史。自分たちが何度も神に背いてきたにもかかわらず、神が繰り返し赦されたことを思い起こします。「それでも神は見捨てなかった」という事実が思い起こされ、強調されています。
• 32–37節：今の苦しみの告白。「私たちは今も奴隷で、とても苦しんでいます」と正直に訴える場面です。ここがこの祈りの中心です。
• 38節：契約の締結。神の恵みを知った者として、「この神と共に生きる」と心に決めます。
4．当時の人々は何を読み取ったのか
ここで重要なのは、最初の読者が置かれていた現実です。彼らは祖国に帰ってきましたが、まだ自由ではありませんでした。自分たちの土地にいながら、「私たちは奴隷だ」と言っています。つまり、問題は解決していなかったのです。それでも、彼らはこう祈りました。「私たちは苦しい。でも、あなたは契約と恵みを守る神です。」彼らは叫ぶことをやめませんでした。神の誠実さに信頼して叫び続けたのです。
5．現代の私たちへのメッセージ
ここから、私たちが大切にすべきポイントが見えてきます。悔い改めとは、一度限りのことではありません。また罪の告白に終わるものではありません。神を信頼し、神のよき結果を待ち望み、「助けて」と叫び続けることです。ネヘミヤ記9章は、祈りの正しい順序を教えています。つまり、神のことばの前に立つ、現実を正直に語る、神の性格を思いめぐらす、小さな従順に踏み出すということです。たとえば今日、「苦しいときに短く『主よ、助けてください』と祈る」ことも、小さな従順の一歩を踏み出すことになります。
6．まず一言、告白しましょう。
ネヘミヤ記9章は、立派な祈り方を教えるための章ではありません。神は叫びを受け止めてくださる方である。この事実を思い出させてくれる章です。祈りがうまくないと思っても大丈夫です。まず一言、「主よ、助けてください」とつぶやくところから始めましょう。そこから神は、きっと私たちを立ち上がらせてくださいます。ではまた明日おあいしましょう。

Nehemiah Chapter 9: A Chapter to Read When You Can No Longer Say “Help Me”
1. Why Do We Stop Praying Honest Prayers?
When you are in pain, can you honestly say, “Please help me”?
In fact, people who have lived a long Christian life sometimes find it harder to say these words.
We may think,
“If I pray like this, people may think my faith is weak.”
“Shouldn’t I be more thankful instead?”
Because of these thoughts, even when we are suffering, we cannot pray honestly.
Nehemiah chapter 9 speaks directly to people like us.
It teaches us that a prayer with crying and calling for help is true repentance in the Bible.
2. The Context of Nehemiah Chapter 9
First, let us look at the background.
The people of Israel returned from exile in Babylon and rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem.
Everything seemed to go well.
In chapter 8, the Law, that is the Word of God, was read aloud, and the people celebrated the Feast of Booths with great joy.
But right after that, in chapter 9, the people suddenly began to fast, wear sackcloth, and confess their sins.
Why did this happen?
Because when they listened carefully to the Word of God, they realized their true situation and their need for repentance.
3. The Structure of Nehemiah Chapter 9
Nehemiah chapter 9 contains a very long prayer, but its structure is clear and logical.
- Verses 1–3: A gathering of repentance
The people read Scripture, confess their sins, and worship God.
Here, reading God’s Word and repentance are closely connected. - Verses 4–6: Praise to God
Before speaking about suffering, they first confess that God is the Creator of heaven and earth. - Verses 7–15: The history of God’s salvation
They remember God’s choosing of Abraham, the Exodus, and God’s guidance in the wilderness.
They confess that God has always kept His promises. - Verses 16–31: The history of Israel’s failure
Although the people turned away from God many times, God continued to forgive them.
The key message is: “Still, God did not abandon them.” - Verses 32–37: Confession of present suffering
They honestly say, “We are still slaves, and we are suffering greatly.”
This is the heart of the prayer. - Verse 38: Making a covenant
Knowing God’s grace, they decide to live with this God.
4. What Did the Original Readers Understand?
It is important to understand the reality of the people at that time.
They had returned to their land, but they were not truly free.
Even in their own land, they said, “We are slaves.”
Their problems were not solved.
Still, they prayed like this:
“We are suffering. But you are the God who keeps covenant and mercy.”
They did not stop crying out.
They continued to cry out while trusting in God’s faithfulness.
5. A Message for Us Today
From this chapter, we can learn something very important.
Repentance is not something we do only once.
It is not just confessing sins and ending there.
Repentance means trusting God and continuing to cry out, “Help me,” while waiting for God’s good work.
Nehemiah chapter 9 shows us the right order of prayer:
- Stand before God’s Word
- Speak honestly about reality
- Remember God’s character
- Take a small step of obedience
For example, praying a short prayer like,
“Lord, please help me,”
is already a small step of obedience.
6. Let Us Begin with One Simple Prayer
Nehemiah chapter 9 does not teach us how to pray beautifully.
It teaches us that God receives our cries.
Even if you feel that you are not good at praying, it is okay.
Start with just one sentence:
“Lord, please help me.”
From there, God will surely help us stand again.
