1．兄エサウとの再会（33:1-11）
ヤコブは、「神の祝福のことば」を握って、先頭に立ってエサウと会う腹を決めました。しかし、現実的なことを言えば、エサウに対面することは、彼にとって恐ろしいものであったことでしょう。贈り物を先に進ませました。ヤコブとしては、彼が奪い取った祝福は、すべて返す、そのような思いがあったのかもしれません。そして家族をその贈り物の後に続け、さらに七回も地に伏しておじぎをしながら、エサウに近づいていくのです。当時の聖書外資料、アマルナ文書にも恭順の意を示す行為として、君主と罪を犯した臣下の間に生じた同様の行為が描かれています。ヤコブは、エサウが、過去の自分の罪を赦し、あわれみの心を向けてくれるように、と心を尽くした、というわけです。
それに対するエサウの態度は、ヤコブの予想を全く超えたものでした。彼は、弟の首をかき抱いて、口づけし、二人ともにさめざめと泣いたのです。ことばでは交わせない心からの赦しと受け入れが生じているのです。二人の心が深く交わされた時であったのでしょう（4節）。ヤコブはエサウに贈り物について説明をし「私は兄上のお顔を見て、神の御顔を見ているようです」（10節）と語っています。ヤコブはへつらったのでしょうか？そうではないでしょう。むしろ全く思いがけない兄エサウの寛容で受容的な態度に、彼はペヌエルで「顔と顔とを合わせて神を見たのに、私のいのちは救われた」という神の臨在の経験、兄エサウの背後にあって、二人の対面を祝福してくださったあわれみ深い神を見る経験をしたのではないでしょうか。兄エサウはヤコブの贈り物を受け（11節）、ひとまず何事もなく、無事対面を果たしました。
神は、私たちの思いを超えた結果をもたらすお方です。主は、私たちが眠っている間にすべてを備え、導かれるお方です。神のことばは安易な気休めではありません。神のことばは真実です。人生の究極的な問題解決手段として、神の業があると覚えましょう。
さらにエサウはヤコブに親切でした。エサウは、善意のしるしとして、ヤコブの旅を助けようと申し出ました。しかし、ヤコブは自分の群れがエサウと共に旅をするにはあまりにも弱いと、一緒に行動することを辞退しました。エサウを「わが主」（13節）と呼びかけるヤコブは、兄との関係に慎重を期していたことは確かです。彼は、ラバンのもとで幾度も気まぐれに報酬を変えられ、悩み苦労してきていました。もしかすれば兄も気まぐれに心が変わるかもしれない。そうでなくてもお互いの間に何かが起これば、それは直ぐに壊れる関係となると考えたかもしれません。実際、長旅で疲れていたヤコブの群れが、エサウの身軽なペースに合わせるのは無理でした。いずれにせよ、ヤコブが、兄のもとセイルへ行くと語ったのは、社交辞令的なことばに過ぎませんでした（16節）。もちろん、エサウもその言葉の意味を理解したことでしょう。確かに平和な別れ方をして、それぞれ自分の生き方をする方がよいということはあるのです。それぞれに人生に苦労し、成熟した行動がとれる年代になった二人の姿があったと言うべきです。
2．迷うヤコブ（33 :12-29）
彼は、西側のスコテへ移動しヨルダン川を渡り、さらに西に進んでシェケムに宿営しました。ただ、彼は、父イサクが住むヘブロンまで旅を続けることもなく、シェケムに来ると、そこに定住しようとするのです。恐らくそれも、エサウを配慮してのことであったと思われます。
大切なのはその後のことです。ヤコブは、ハモルの子らから土地を買いました。そして、まず祭壇を築き、「エル・エロへ・イスラエル」と名付けました。それは、「神はイスラエルの神」であるという意味です。つまり、ここからヤコブが、アブラハムの姿勢に倣い、神の祝福を受け継ぐ人生を歩む、本当の歩みが始まるのです。
ただし、次の34章の出来事でもわかるように、そこは、神のみこころの土地ではありませんでした。アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブに約束された、神が与える地は、シェケムでもヘブロンでも、またエルサレムでもなく、パレスチナ全土であったからです。彼らはいつそのような壮大な神の御計画に気づいたであろうか、と私は思います。もしかしたら、一生気づかずに終わってしまったかもしれません。
神のご計画の偉大さ、私たちに与えられる祝福の豊かさを理解しきれぬ人間的な限界があります。神のご計画は常に、私たちの思いを超えたものである、そこをわきまえつつ、私たちの人生は、神の偉大な計画の一過程であることを覚えて、歩ませていただきたいものです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネルの登録、メンバーの登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Chapter 33: Reconciliation with Esau
- reunion with his brother Esau (33:1-11)
Jacob was determined to take the lead and meet Esau, holding the ‘blessed word of God’. However, to be realistic, the prospect of meeting Esau face to face must have been terrifying for him. He let the gift go ahead. As for Jacob, he may have felt that he would return all the blessings he had taken away from him. He then followed his family after the gift and approached Esau seven more times, bowing down to the ground and bowing to him. The extra-biblical sources of the time, the Amarna documents, also describe a similar act of reverence, which occurred between the monarch and his guilty subjects. Jacob, in turn, tried his best to get Esau to forgive him for his past sins and to turn to him in mercy.
Esau’s attitude to this was completely beyond Jacob’s expectations. He held his brother by the neck, kissed him on the mouth and they both wept bitterly. A heartfelt forgiveness and acceptance arose that could not be exchanged in words. It must have been a time of deep communion between their hearts (v. 4). Jacob explains the gift to Esau and says: ‘I see the face of my brother, and I see the face of God’ (v. 10). Was Jacob humiliated? Probably not. Rather, in the completely unexpected generosity and receptivity of his brother Esau, he may have experienced the presence of God at Penuel, ‘I saw God face to face, and my life was saved’; he may have experienced seeing the merciful God who was behind his brother Esau and who blessed their meeting. His brother Esau received Jacob’s gift (v. 11), and the meeting went off without a hitch.
God is the One who brings about results beyond our thoughts. He is the One who prepares and guides everything while we sleep. God’s word is not an easy comfort. God’s word is truth. Let us remember that God’s work is the ultimate solution to life’s problems.
Furthermore, Esau was kind to Jacob. As a sign of goodwill, Esau offered to help Jacob on his journey. However, Jacob declined to travel with him, as his flock was too weak to travel with Esau. Jacob, who calls Esau ‘my lord’ (v. 13), was certainly cautious about his relationship with his brother. He had suffered and struggled under Laban, who had repeatedly changed his rewards at his whim. Perhaps his brother might also change his mind on a whim. If not, he might have thought that if something happened between them, it would be a relationship that would soon be broken. In fact, Jacob’s flock, tired from the long journey, could not match Esau’s light pace. In any case, Jacob’s talk of going to Seir to his brother was only a socially acceptable remark (v. 16). Of course, Esau would have understood the meaning of those words. It is true that it is sometimes better to part peacefully and each live his own life. It should be said that they had each struggled in life and had reached an age when they could act maturely. - lost Jacob (33 :12-29).
He moved west to Succoth, crossed the Jordan River and went further west to camp at Shechem. Only, he does not continue his journey to Hebron, where his father Isaac lives, and when he comes to Shechem, he tries to settle there. Presumably, this was also out of consideration for Esau.
What is important is what happened afterwards. Jacob bought the land from the sons of Hamor. He first built an altar and named it ‘El Elohe Israel’. It means ‘God is the God of Israel’. In other words, this is where Jacob’s real walk begins, where he follows Abraham’s attitude and lives a life of inheriting God’s blessing.
However, as the events of the next 34 chapters show, it was not the land of God’s will. The land God promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was not Shechem, Hebron or Jerusalem, but the whole of Palestine. When, I wonder, did they realise such a grand plan of God? Maybe they would have been unaware of it for the rest of their lives.
There are human limitations that prevent us from understanding the greatness of God’s plan and the richness of the blessings that are available to us. God’s plan is always beyond our thoughts, so let us remember that our lives are part of God’s great plan and let us walk in it. God’s word is true. God bless you.
