1．ヨルダン川のほとりで（3:1-6）  

イスラエルの人々は、長い旅の終わりにヨルダン川の手前までたどり着きました。季節は春で、川は雪解けや雨の影響で水かさが増し、流れも速くなっていました。そのため、川を簡単に渡ることはできませんでした。橋も船もなかったのです。

そんな中、神さまは「契約の箱（＝神の臨在のしるし）を祭司たちが担いで進んだら、あとに続きなさい」と命じられました（3:3）。また、契約の箱と人々の間には約900メートルの距離を空けるように指示されました（3:4）。これは、神さまの聖なる存在への敬意を表すため、そして間違いなく神さまの後に続けるように、道がよく見えるようにするためでした。

さらに、ヨシュアは人々に「きよく整えておきなさい。明日、神さまが大きなことをしてくださるからです」（3:5）と呼びかけます。つまり、「心を整え、神さまに従う準備をしましょう」という意味です。

また、神さまはヨシュアに「今日から、わたしはあなたを全イスラエルの目の前で大いなる者とする」と語られました（3:7）。これはヨシュア自身の力ではなく、神さまの力が現れることを示すためでした。ヨシュアは、神さまが共におられるからこそ偉大な存在となったのです。

2．ヨルダン川をわたるとき（3:7-17）  

次の日、祭司たちが契約の箱を担いでヨルダン川に足を踏み入れると、なんと上流で水が止まり、道が開けました（3:15–17）。聖書には「足が水にひたったとき、水の流れがせき止められた」と書かれています。

この出来事を「信じて一歩踏み出せば奇跡が起きる」というメッセージと受け取る人もいます。しかし、ここで本当に大切なのは「勇気ある一歩」よりも、「神さまの命令に従った」という点です。

出エジプトのとき、モーセも神さまの言葉に従って杖を海に向けて差し出すと、海が分かれました（出エジプト記14章）。このときと同じように、「神さまが言われたとおりに行動したとき、神さまが道を開いてくださった」という流れがあります。ヨシュアは「このことで、生ける神が、私たちの中におられることがわかるでしょう」（3:10）と言いました。川を渡ること自体がゴールではなく、「神さまが共にいてくださる」ということを体験するためだったのです。

また、10節にはカナン人やアモリ人などの名前が出てきます。これは単なる地理的な情報ではなく、アブラハムへの約束（創世記15:18–21）が今まさに実現しようとしていることを示しています。

3．きょうを生きる私たちへ  

さて、この話は昔の出来事にとどまりません。私たち一人ひとりにも関係があります。みなさんの人生にも、「どうしても越えられない」と感じるヨルダン川のような壁があるかもしれません。自分の力だけでは先に進めない、そんな場面に出会うこともあるでしょう。

しかし、神さまはただ立ち止まるようには言われません。「これまで通ったことのない道を通らせよう」と語りかけてくださいます（3:4）。それは、無理をさせるためではなく、神さまが新しい道を用意してくださっているからです。

私たちにできることは、神さまの言葉に耳を傾け、「はい、わかりました」と信頼して一歩を踏み出すことです。

最後に、こう思っていただけたらうれしいです。「どうせ私の人生なんて、こんなもの」ではなく、「神さまが共におられるから、私の人生にはまだ可能性がある」と。

Joshua Chapter 3　When God Opens the Way

1. At the Edge of the Jordan River (Joshua 3:1–6)

The people of Israel had been traveling for many years. Now they arrived at the Jordan River, which was the last barrier before entering the land God had promised them.

It was springtime. Because of melting snow and heavy rains, the river was very full. The water was deep and fast. There were no bridges, and there were no boats. It seemed impossible to cross.

But God gave them clear instructions: “When the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant, follow behind them” (3:3). The Ark was a special box that showed God’s holy presence with His people.

God also told them to keep a distance of about 900 meters from the Ark (3:4). This was to show respect for God’s holiness, and so that everyone could clearly see where to go.

Then Joshua said to the people, “Get ready. Tomorrow, God will do amazing things among you” (3:5). This meant: “Prepare your hearts. Be ready to obey Him.”

God also spoke to Joshua and said, “From today on, I will make the people see that I am with you” (3:7). In other words, it was not Joshua’s strength that mattered, but God’s presence and power.

2. Crossing the Jordan River (Joshua 3:7–17)

The next morning, the priests carried the Ark and walked toward the river. When their feet touched the edge of the water, something amazing happened (3:15–17).

The water coming from upstream stopped. It piled up far away, and the riverbed became dry. Then all the people crossed on dry ground.

Some people say this story is about having strong faith to take “the first step.” But that is not the main point. What really matters is that the people did what God told them to do.

In the time of Moses, God told him to raise his staff, and the Red Sea opened (Exodus 14). Here, God told the priests to walk into the river. In both stories, God opened the way after His people listened and obeyed.

Joshua said, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you” (3:10). Crossing the river was not just about reaching the land—it was about learning to trust that God was truly with them.

The Bible also names the people living in the land, like the Canaanites and Amorites. These names show that God was now beginning to fulfill the promise He made to Abraham long ago (Genesis 15:18–21).

3. A Message for Us Today

This is not only an old story—it speaks to us today.

You may face difficult moments in life. You may feel like there is a big river in front of you that you cannot cross. You don’t know how to move forward.

But God does not leave us stuck. He says, “I will lead you along a way you have not gone before” (3:4). That does not mean He will force us—it means He is already preparing a new way for us.

What can we do? Listen to God’s voice. Trust Him. And when He shows the way, say, “Yes, Lord,” and take a step.

Let me end with this thought:

Even if you feel like, “My life is too small. Nothing good can happen now”—remember this:

If God is with you, your life still has beautiful possibilities.

So today, and tomorrow, walk with hope.
