©Dr. Makoto

Psalm 143 Explained Simply: A Prayer for Rescue and Guidance

1. When You Pray but See No Answer

You may keep praying while nothing seems to change. At such times, you may wonder whether God is truly listening. The poet of Psalm 143 was also surrounded by enemies and close to losing heart in deep darkness. In that situation, how did he keep praying, and what did he ask for?

2. The Historical and Literary Context

The title says, “A Psalm of David.” The Septuagint adds that David was being chased by his son, so some readers connect this psalm with Absalom’s rebellion. However, we cannot know for sure whether David himself wrote it or whether a later writer passed it on as a prayer of David. This is an individual prayer of lament. It is also counted as the last of the seven penitential psalms: Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143.

The psalm has two main parts. Verses 1 to 6 describe the prayer and the suffering. Verses 7 to 12 ask for rescue and guidance.

3. The Flow of the Psalm

Verses 1 to 2: Not Because I Am Right

The poet asks God to answer according to His faithfulness and righteousness. But he does not say, “Help me because I am right.” He admits, “No one living is righteous before You.” He depends not on his own goodness, but on God’s mercy instead of judgment.

Verses 3 to 6: Remembering God’s Works in the Darkness

The enemy has driven the poet into a desperate crisis. His spirit is weak, and his heart is empty. Then he remembers the days of long ago and thinks about God’s works. Instead of looking only at his trouble, he turns his heart to what God has done before. He longs for God like dry ground longs for water.

Verses 7 to 10: Asking for Rescue and Guidance

The poet asks God to answer quickly and not hide His face. Yet he is not asking only for a way out. He is not thinking only about what he will do after he is rescued from his enemies. He asks how he should walk in his life now.

Verses 11 to 12: Appealing to God’s Name and Grace

At the end, the poet asks God to keep him alive for the sake of His name and to bring him out of trouble because of His righteousness. His reason is never his own record of good works. He depends on God’s grace to the end.

4. How to Read This Psalm

The main point of this psalm is not only the removal of enemies. Based on the confession in verse 2, a person who depends on God’s righteousness and grace asks for rescue and guidance in one prayer. The “way I should go” is not a life plan that is convenient for the poet. It is a life that does God’s will. Trusting God also does not mean doing nothing. The poet asks for the guidance of God’s Spirit so that he can follow the way God teaches him.

5. Message for Us Today

When we cannot see an answer, we may wonder, “Is God really listening?” The poet of Psalm 143 felt the same way. Yet he did not give up on God because his situation had not changed. He remembered what God had done before and placed his hope in God’s faithfulness.

That is why he prayed not only, “Take this suffering away,” but also, “How should I walk now?” Because he believed that God was listening, he asked not only for rescue but also for guidance.

When we cannot see an answer, let us not decide what God is like only by looking at our situation. Let us remember how God has guided us before and keep praying, “How should I walk in this situation?” See you again tomorrow.
