サムエル記第二10章　アンモンとアラムとの戦い

1．イスラエルとアンモン

不思議なことに、人の善意は必ずしもそのまま善意として受け止められないことがあります。人は物事を様々に受け止めるものです。人の心は複雑です。そして理由もなく関係が壊れていくことがあります。そ

れは人間が罪人であり、社会が罪人の集まりであるための、実に厄介な問題です。

アンモン人との関りについて、一つのエピソードが挿入されています。かつて、アンモン人は、ヤベシュ・ギルアデの人々を冷酷に扱い、これを滅ぼそうとしました。その危機を救ったのが先王のサウルです（１サムエル11）。ですから、アンモン人とイスラエル人は、よい関係ではありませんでした。ところが二代目の王ダビデは、アンモン人の王ナハシュと友好関係を築き上げるのに成功しました。そして、時が過ぎ、アンモン人の統治者に世代交代が生じたので、ダビデは、挨拶のため、新しい王に使節を派遣します。すでにアンモン人は、イスラエルの支配下にありましたが、ダビデは、友好関係の維持を図り、中東における共存共栄をはかろうと考えたのでしょう。

ところが、アンモン人の王ナハシュの子ハヌンは、家臣たちの助言に耳を傾け、父の友好政策を翻して、ダビデの使者たちを侮辱するのです。またハヌンはダビデの憎しみをかったと見るや否や近隣の王たちに声をかけ新たな連合を組織しました。これは事実上の宣戦布告です。ツォバは、アラム（シリヤ）人の町で、ハマテとダマスコの間にあります。サウル王の死後、ツォバの王ハダデ・エゼルは勢力回復をはかったので、ダビデはこれを撃ち、多量の青銅などを奪い取っています（2サムエル8:3）。だから彼らにとっても、これは一つの復讐の機会であったのです。「マアカ」は、その南側に位置し、北はヘルモン山、西は上部ヨルダン川、南はゲシュルに接するアラムの小国です。「トブ」は、さらにその南側に位置し、北側はアンモンに接するアラムの町です。もともと彼らは、今日のヨルダンにあるラバを首都としていましたから、エルサレムとの距離は近いわけで、そのエルサレムを北側から攻め入るように陣を組みました。

2．イスラエルの勝利と中東での覇権

この戦いが、イスラエルにとっては、五分五分、決して簡単に終わらせる戦いではなかったことは、ヨアブの立ち振る舞いからも理解できます。ヨアブは、兄弟アビシャイと戦略を練り、互いに協力しあうことを確認しています。また、ヨアブは言いました「強くあれ。われわれの民のため、われわれの神の町々のために、奮い立とう。主が、御目にかなうことをされるのだ」（12節）かつてダビデが、絶体絶命を感じながら奮い立ったように、ヨアブもまた奮い立っています。しかしその結果については、神にゆだねている点が興味深いところです。勝利を求めて祈るのではありません。あくまでも、主が御心に適うことをするように祈るのです。事の勝敗は神の御手にあるからです。そこに、ヨアブの信仰が見て取れます。

この戦争は、イスラエルにとって非常に重要な結果をもたらしました。イスラエルはアラムの同盟軍を打ち破り、アラム人のみならず彼らのすべての同盟国家を従えることになりました。つまり、イスラエルは、東と北の強力なアラム諸国家を従属させ、エジプトとアラビヤ・シリヤの地とを結ぶ主要交易路の支配権を確保したたのです。イスラエルは中東における政治的覇権と経済的利権を手中にしました。中東における勢力均衡の地図が塗り替えられ、イスラエルを中心とする中東の秩序が確立されるのです。ダビデの最盛期が訪れたということです。

3．神の約束の偉大さ

神がダビデに約束された祝福はダビデが想像する以上のことでした。ダビデは、自分のみならず、イスラエルが世界の中でそのように高められていくとは決して考えもしなかったでしょう。しかしそれは、すでにアブラハムやその子孫たちに歴史的に約束されていたことです。しかしかつてアブラハムが、神に「あなたの子孫に、わたしはこの地を与える。」と「さあ、目を上げて、あなたがいるその場所から北、南、東、西を見渡しなさい。立って、この地を縦と横に歩き回りなさい。わたしがあなたに与えるのだから」（創世13:14-17）。と語った時に、この状況に至ることを、彼は想像し得たでしょうか。彼にはできなかったでしょう。

今日、私たちにもイエス・キリストを通して約束されていることがあります。それは実に大いなることです。大切なことは、常に神の約束を信頼し、その約束が実現する時を待ち望みながら、神が与えられる時を過ごすことです。また神が与えられた機会において奮い立つことでしょう。神と共に奮い立つ力も、神に与えられるものです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

2 Samuel Chapter 10 Battle between Ammon and Aram

1. Israel and Ammon

Curiously, a person’s good intentions may not always be taken as good intentions. People take things in various ways. The human mind is complicated. And relationships can break for no reason. It’s a really tricky problem because humans are sinners and society is a group of sinners.

An episode is inserted about the relationship with the Ammonites. Once upon a time, the Ammonites treated the people of Jabesh-Gilead ruthlessly and tried to destroy them. It was Saul, the former king, who saved the crisis (1 Samuel 11). So the Ammonites and the Israelites were not in a good relationship. However, the second king, David, succeeded in establishing a friendly relationship with the Ammonite king, Nahash. And as time passed and the Ammonite rulers changed generations, David sent an envoy to the new king to greet him. The Ammonites were already under Israeli rule, but David would have thought of maintaining friendly relations and coexisting and co-prospering in the Middle East.

However, Hanun, son of Nahash, king of the Ammonites, listens to the advice of his vassals and insults David’s messengers by reversing his father’s friendship policy. Hanun also formed a new coalition by calling out to his neighboring kings as soon as he saw David’s hatred. This is a de facto declaration of war. Zobah is a town of the Aram (Syrian) people, between Hamate and Damascus. After the death of King Saul, King Hadadezel of Zobah tried to regain his power, and David shot it and robbed him of a large amount of bronze (2 Samuel 8: 3). So for them too, this was an opportunity for revenge. Maakah is a small country of Aram, located on the south side, bordering Mount Hermon to the north, the Upper Jordan River to the west, and Geshur to the south. Tobu is located further to the south and to the north is the town of Aram, which borders Ammon. Originally, they had a Rabbah in Jordan today as their capital, so they were close to Jerusalem, so they teamed up to attack Jerusalem from the north.

2. Israeli victory and hegemony in the Middle East

It can be understood from Joab’s behavior that this battle was not an easy battle for Israel. Joab has confirmed that he will work with his brother Abishai in a strategy and cooperate with each other. And Joab said, “Be strong, and let us flight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.” (ver.12) Once, just as David was inspiring, feeling desperate, Joab is also inspiring. However, it is interesting that the result is left to God. He does not pray for victory. We pray that the Lord will do what is right for us. Because the victory or defeat of things is in the hands of God. You can see the faith of Joab there.

This war had very important consequences for Israel. Israel has defeated Aram’s allied forces and has taken over not only the Arameans but all their allies. In short, Israel subordinated the powerful Aram nations of the east and north and secured control of the main trade route between Egypt and the land of Arabiya Syria. Israel has gained political hegemony and economic interests in the Middle East. The map of the balance of power in the Middle East will be repainted and a world of middle east order centered on Israel will be established. It means that the heyday of David has arrived.

3. 3. The greatness of God’s promise

The blessings that God promised to David were more than David could have imagined. David would never have thought that Israel, not just himself, would be so elevated in the world. But that was already historically promised to Abraham and his descendants. “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever (Gen. 13:14-17).” Could he has imagined that this would happen when he was told? He wouldn’t have been able to.

Today, we too have something promised through Jesus Christ. That’s really great. The important thing is to always trust God’s promises and spend the time God gives them, waiting for them to come true. You will also be inspired by the opportunities that God has given you. God also gives us the power to inspire with God. I pray that today will be a good day.
