1．ちょい悪で生きてみる
著者は、人生の満足を見出そうとしたこれまでの歩みから、出てきた結論を述べていきます。第一にそれは、曲げられたものをまっすぐにはできないこと。人間の試みには限界があることでした。そして第二に知恵が増せば、悩みも深くなること。物事がわかるようになればなったで苦労することがあるということ。そして、今日第三に語ることは、結論から言えば、「人生の楽しみを追求しても空しい」ということです。
たとえば人生の楽しみの一つにお酒があるでしょう。もちろん、お酒もほどほどで、酒に飲まれるような人生になっては元もこうもありません。ですから、酒もほどほどに楽しみながら、いわばちょい悪（ちょっと愚かな）の人生を生きてみたらどうだろう（3節）。快楽を楽しみながらも、快楽の奴隷にはならずに生きるのです（10節）。そうして事業を拡張し（4節）、大邸宅を作り（5，6節）、奴隷を得て（7節）、財産を蓄え、女を侍らせ（8節）、名声を得るわけです（9節）。けれども、結局それで心が満たされて終わりということはない、と言います。なるほど、しかし、そこまで出来ない人からすれば、それだけ楽しめれば十分ではないか、贅沢を言うな、と思わされもします。ただ、成功者の身から言えば、それも採算の合わないこと、風を追うような毎日だ、と言うのです（11節）。結局世間的な成功を積み重ねたところで、あるいは勝ち組の先頭に立ったところで、人間は決して満足できない、と言うのです。
2．楽しみはいつまでも続かない
人間の人生って何でしょう。知恵ある生き方と愚かな生き方、どちらがよいかと言えば、きっと、知恵ある生き方になるでしょう（13節）。それは、光と闇のどちらが優れているか、と言えば、光であるのと同じです。しかし、知恵ある生き方には悩みも増すという現実もある。であれば、ほどほどに知恵ある生き方が良いのではないか、と言うことになるのですが、そうとも言えないのです。というのも、知恵ある者も、ほどほどに知恵ある者も、そして、愚かな生き方をした者も、皆同じ結末を迎えるという事実に直面するからです。ちょっと知恵ある生き方をしようが、並外れて知恵ある生き方をしようが、結末は、愚かな生き方をした者と変わらないのです。「あいつは真面目なんだよ、ある程度遊びがないとね」と真面目な者を見下したような生き方をしたところで、結末は同じなのです。
3．誰が自分の楽しみの後を継ぐのか？
実際、誰が、自分の汗水たらして稼いだものを受け継ぐことになるのか、考えてみれば、それは一目瞭然です。人はいつまでも今の楽しみを持続できるわけでもありません。やがて必ず人生のタイムリミットがやってくる。病気や事故で早くその時を迎える人もいるかもしれませんが、遅かれ早かれ、人はすべてを手放して、この地上に置いて神のもとに帰っていくのです。しかも、残した財産が、自分の意図したとおりに使われるかどうかなど、わかりようがありません。大きく稼いで、蓄えた者ほど、大きな損失を味わうのです。冷めて考えてみると、成功した人生も、それほど羨むようなものではありません、と言うわけです（21節）。
人は、自分の死の時期も、死後のこともコントロールできないわけですから、人生をコントロールして生きていると思いこんで人生を歩んでいるに過ぎないのです。人はそれを「運命」と呼ぶからもしれません。しかし、有神論者の立場からすれば、それは、神の定めです。人間は自由に生きているようでありながら、そうではない現実がある。運命、もしくは神に定められた人生を生きている。人生において知恵あるなど何の意味があろうか、というわけです（26節）。ではまた明日に続きます。よき一日であるように祈ります。

Ecclesiastes 2: A Successful Life is a Boring Life
1. try to live a little evil
The author goes on to state the conclusions that have emerged from his previous attempts to find satisfaction in life. First, that it is impossible to straighten what has been bent. There is a limit to human attempts. And secondly, as wisdom increases, so does the depth of our troubles. The more we come to understand things, the more we have to struggle. And the third thing I would like to say today is, in conclusion, that pursuing the pleasures of life is empty.
For example, one of life’s pleasures would be drinking. Of course, alcohol should be enjoyed in moderation, and it is no good if one’s life is consumed by alcohol. Therefore, why don’t we enjoy drinking in moderation and try to live a little evil (a little foolish) life, so to speak (verse 3)? Enjoy pleasure, but do not become a slave to it (v. 10). So he expands his business (v. 4), builds a mansion (vv. 5, 6), gets a slave (v. 7), accumulates wealth, has a woman as his maid (v. 8), and gains fame (v. 9). But, he says, it is not the end of the story. I see, but those who are not able to go that far may think that it is enough for them to enjoy themselves, and that they should not be extravagant. However, from the point of view of a successful person, he says that it is unprofitable, and that it is just like chasing the wind (v.11). In the end, he says, people are never satisfied with accumulating worldly success or being at the head of a winning team.
2. enjoyment does not last forever
What is human life? If we ask which is better, a wise life or a foolish life, surely it will be a wise life (v. 13). It is like asking which is better, the light or the darkness. However, the reality is that a wise life also brings more troubles. So, we might say that a life of wisdom in moderation is better, but that is not quite true. But this is not so, because we are faced with the fact that the wise, the moderately wise, and those who live foolishly all end up the same way. Whether one lives a little wisely or extraordinarily wisely, the end result is the same as for those who live foolishly. If we look down on those who are serious and say, “He is serious, he must have a certain amount of fun,” the end result is the same.
3. Who will take over your fun?
In fact, it is obvious when one considers who will inherit what one has earned with one’s hard work. People cannot sustain their current enjoyment forever. Eventually, there will always come a time limit in life. When that happens, people will let go of everything and leave it here on earth to return to God. Some may reach that time early due to illness or accident, but sooner or later one is forced to give up his or her possessions. The more greatly one has earned and accumulated, the greater the loss one will experience. In fact, there is no way to know if the property you leave behind will be used as you intended. In cold reflection, a successful life is not so enviable, either (v. 21).
And since one has no control over the time of one’s death or what happens after death, one is only living a life of belief that one is in control of one’s life. People may even call it “destiny” because they call it “fate. But from the atheist’s standpoint, it is God’s predestination. While it seems that human beings live freely, the reality is that they do not. He lives a life that is predestined, or predestined by God. What is the point of being wise in life, etc. (v. 26)?
