エリヤがこのように宣言した背景には、当時の王アハブの行動がありました。アハブ王は、隣国フェニキアとの友好を深めるため、フェニキアの王女イゼベルと結婚します。外交的には良いことだったかもしれません。しかし、問題は宗教と文化の違いでした。イゼベルは、雨と豊かさをもたらすと信じられていたフェニキアの神「バアル」を信じていて、その信仰をイスラエルに持ち込んだのです。そのため、人々は「雨を降らせるのはバアルだ」と考えるようになりました。
そこでエリヤは、「本当に雨をもたらすのは誰なのか」を示すために、こう宣言したのです。「雨は止まる。主なる神の言葉によって。」

エリヤの言葉の通り、雨が降らなくなり、食べ物が不足します。そんな苦しい状況の中で、エリヤはさらに不思議な体験をします。カラスがパンと肉を運んできたり、見知らぬ町で出会ったやもめの家では、粉と油が尽きることがありません。また、やもめの子どもが亡くなりますが、エリヤの祈りによって命を取り戻します。
この三つの出来事は、それぞれ「自然を支配する神」「日々の生活を支える神」「命を与える神」について語っています。つまり、神は「雨」だけでなく、「食べ物」も、「命」も支配しているということです。
3．この話は、今の私たちに何を語るのか？
現代では「雨が降るかどうか」よりも、「経済が回るか」「テクノロジーが進むか」「国が守ってくれるか」が私たちの安心の基準になっています。しかし、もしそうしたものが止まってしまうことがあったらどうでしょうか。この物語はこう問いかけます。「あなたが本当に信頼しているものは、何ですか？」
エリヤの時代、多くの人はバアルに頼りました。今の私たちはどうでしょう？お金？仕事？健康？もちろんそれらは大切ですが、絶対に守ってくれるものではありません。そのためこの物語は、「見えないけれど確かな存在」に信頼することの大切さを、私たちに考えさせます。

What happens if the rain stops?
In 1 Kings 17, the prophet Elijah says to the king of Israel:
“From now on, there will be no rain or dew for a while.”
You might think, “Is that really possible?”
In ancient Israel, no rain meant a big crisis. People lived by farming, and rain was their lifeline.
1. Why did Elijah say this?
King Ahab married Jezebel, a princess from Phoenicia, to make peace between the nations. But Jezebel worshiped Baal, a god believed to bring rain and wealth. Soon, people thought, “Rain comes from Baal.”
Elijah wanted to show who really controls the rain. So he said:
“The rain will stop. By the word of the Lord.”
2. What happened next?
Rain stopped. Food ran out. But Elijah saw amazing things:
- Ravens brought him bread and meat.
- A poor widow’s flour and oil never ran out.
- Her son died, but came back to life after Elijah prayed.
These three events show:
God rules nature, daily life, and life itself.
3. What does this mean for us today?
Today, we trust money, technology, and governments more than rain. But what if these fail?
This story asks: “What do you really trust?”
Money? Health? Job? They are important, but not perfect.
The Bible invites us to trust in the unseen but true God who cares for life.
