1．神さまの約束を「自分のもの」にするには（17:1–2）
ヨシュア記17章では、ヨセフの子孫であるマナセとエフライムが受け取った土地について語られています。その中で「マキル」という人物が登場します。彼は勇敢な戦士であり、神さまから与えられた土地をしっかりと自分のものにしました（17:1）。
ここで大切なのは、「神さまが約束してくださったからといって、何もしなくてよい」ということではないという点です。神さまは確かに約束を与えてくださいますが、その約束を「自分のもの」とするためには、信じて一歩踏み出すことが必要です。
つまり、神さまの力（主権）と人間の行動（責任）が共に働くことが大切だという、聖書の重要な考え方がここに表れています（ヨシュア1:9、ピリピ2:13）。
2．ツェロフハデの娘たち：信仰によって声を上げた女性たち（17:3–6）
次に登場するのは、ツェロフハデという人の5人の娘たちです。彼女たちの父には男の子がいなかったため、土地をもらえないかもしれないという問題がありました。しかし、彼女たちはあきらめず、モーセに「私たちにも土地をください」と訴えました（民数記27章）。神さまはその願いを受け入れ、彼女たちにも土地を与えました。
この出来事は、旧約聖書の中でもとても大切な場面です。女性たちが信仰をもって行動し、神さまの前で正義を求めたのです。現代でも、「信じて声を上げること」はとても大切です。ツェロフハデの娘たちは、その模範となる存在です。
3．勇気がなければ、約束は実現しない（17:12–13）
マナセ族は神さまから土地を与えられましたが、その土地にはまだカナン人が住んでおり、完全に追い出すことができませんでした。「彼らが強くなったときには、カナン人に労役を課したが、追い払うことはできなかった」（17:13）と記されています。
このことは、「神さまの約束があっても、勇気をもって進まなければ、実現しないことがある」ということを教えています。ヘブル人への手紙11章には、「信仰とは、見えないものを信じて進むこと」と書かれています。信仰には、行動が必要なのです。
4．「森でも開拓せよ」：与えられたものを活かす信仰（17:14–18）
ヨセフ族は、与えられた土地に満足できず、もっと広い土地がほしいとヨシュアに願い出ました。するとヨシュアは、「上って行きなさい。その地を開拓するのがよい。たとえ森であっても開拓し、隅々まであなたのものとしなさい」（17:15–18）と答えました。
つまり、「与えられたものをどう使うかが大切だ」と教えているのです。これは、イエスさまが語った「忠実なしもべのたとえ」（マタイ25章）にもつながります。神さまから与えられたものを、どのように活かすかが問われているのです。
5．今の私たちへの問いかけ：「あなたの森」はどこ？
この章は、私たちにも問いかけています。
・ あなたが「開拓すべき森」はどこですか？
・ あなたが「踏み出せずにいる場所」はどこですか？
・ あなたは、神さまの約束を「自分のもの」として受け取る勇気を持っていますか？
ヤコブの手紙4章には、「あなたがたが持っていないのは、求めないからです。…神はさらに豊かな恵みを与えてくださる」と書かれています。つまり、いちばんの課題は、自分自身の中にある不安やためらいかもしれません。
6．ここで、私自身の体験を少しだけ…
神学校の卒業式の前夜、私はある特別な言葉を受け取りました。教職員と卒業生、家族が集まる聖餐式のとき、私がお世話になったウィルバー教授が、私を抱きしめてこうささやいてくれたのです。「神があなたとともにおられる。未知の世界に踏み出す勇気を持て。」この言葉は、今でも私の心に残っています。
神さまの約束を信じて一歩を踏み出すことは、決して簡単ではありません。しかし、神さまが共におられるなら、私たちは進むことができるのです。
結び：信仰とは、神さまの約束に応える勇気
ヨシュア記17章は、私たちにこう教えています。神さまは「上って行きなさい。開拓しなさい」と語られます。私たちが信じて一歩踏み出すとき、神さまはその歩みを祝福してくださいます。あなたにとっての「森」がどんなに深くても、神さまは共におられます。今日も、勇気をもって一歩を踏み出してみませんか。神さまの祝福が、あなたとあなたの教会に豊かにありますように。
Joshua 17: Joseph’s Family, Courage, and Faith in Action
- Making God’s Promise Your Own (17:1–2)
In Joshua 17, we read about the land given to the descendants of Joseph—Manasseh and Ephraim.
One man named Makir is called a brave warrior. Because of his courage, he received land from God and made it his own (17:1).
This teaches us something important:
Even when God gives a promise, we must take a step of faith to receive it.
In the Bible, this is called the cooperation between God’s power (His sovereignty) and our responsibility (Philippians 2:13, Joshua 1:9).
God works with us when we trust Him and move forward. - Zelophehad’s Daughters: Women Who Spoke with Faith (17:3–6)
Next, we meet five daughters of a man named Zelophehad. He had no sons, so his daughters were afraid they would not receive land.
But they did not give up. They went to Moses and said, “Please give us land too” (Numbers 27).
God listened to them and gave them what they asked for.
This story is very important. These women showed faith and courage.
They are a good example for us today: when we believe in God, we can speak up for what is right. - Without Courage, the Promise Stays Unfinished (17:12–13)
The tribe of Manasseh received land, but they could not remove the Canaanites who lived there.
“When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work, but they did not drive them out completely” (17:13).
This shows us that even when God gives a promise, we must have courage to fully receive it.
Hebrews 11 says that faith means trusting what we cannot see—and moving forward.
Faith is not only believing. It is also doing. - “Clear the Forest”: Use What God Has Given You (17:14–18)
The people of Joseph’s family were not happy with the land they received. They wanted more.
Joshua answered them:
“Go up into the forest and clear the land… Even if it is full of trees, make it your own” (17:15–18).
In other words, Joshua said, “Use what God has already given you.”
This is like Jesus’ story of the faithful servant (Matthew 25).
God wants us to use our gifts and grow them—not just ask for more. - A Question for You: What Is Your “Forest”?
This chapter asks us some important questions:
What is the “forest” you need to clear?
Where are you afraid to take a step?
Do you have the courage to make God’s promise your own?
James 4:2–6 says:
“You do not have because you do not ask… But God gives more grace.”
Sometimes, the biggest problem is not outside us—but inside us.
We are afraid. We hesitate. We wait too long. - A Personal Story: A Word That Changed Me
Let me share a short story from my life.
The night before my graduation from seminary, we had a special worship service.
One of my professors, Dr. Wilbur, hugged me and whispered in my ear:
“God is with you. Have the courage to step into the unknown.”
That moment stayed with me.
It reminded me that faith is not always easy—but God is always with us.

Joshua 17 teaches us that faith is not just believing in God’s promise.
It is stepping forward with courage and using what God has given us.
God says, “Go up. Clear the land. Make it yours.”
Even if your “forest” looks big or scary, God is with you.
