1．神さまは約束を守る方です
ヨシュア記23章は、リーダーであるヨシュアが年老いて語った、最後の説教です。ここでヨシュアは、「主（神さま）は、大きな国々をあなたがたの前から追い払われた」（23:9）と語ります。これは、モーセの時代にすでに約束されていたことです。申命記11章には、「主にすがるなら、大きくて強い国々を占領できる」と書かれていました。つまり、神さまは本当に約束を守る方だということです。神学者のR.C.スプロールは、これを「契約が歴史の中で実現する瞬間」と呼びました。
この流れは、聖書全体でもとても大切です。神さまはアブラハムに土地を約束し、出エジプトで民を救い、申命記で契約を語り、それがヨシュア記で実現しました。
2．あなたは約束にどう応えるか
約束のあとは、「応答」が必要です。神さまが約束を守ってくださったなら、今度は人間の側がどう応えるかが大切になります。ヨシュアはこう語ります。「主が告げられたように、彼らの地を占領しなさい」（23:5）「あなたがたは、主を愛しなさい」（23:11）
つまり、約束されたものを「受け取る姿勢」と「忠実な歩み」が必要だということです。契約は一方的な恵みだけでなく、応答する関係なのです。ですから、神さまが助けてくださったから終わり、ではなく、そこから信仰の歩みが始まります。実際には、罪の火種は残り、誘惑も再びやってきます。信仰者には「完成すべき救い」があるのです。毎日の中で、「どこに心を向けるか」「何を避けるか」といった小さな選びの積み重ねが大切です。
3．「主にすがる」とはどういうこと？
では、どうやって信仰の選びを続けていけばよいのでしょうか。ヨシュアの答えはシンプルです。「今日までしてきたように、主にすがりなさい」（23:8）「すがる」という言葉は、「神さまを信頼して、近くにい続ける」という意味です。
これは新約聖書でイエスさまが「わたしにとどまっていなさい」（ヨハネ15:4）と言った場面とつながっています。つまり、旧約と新約は同じことを語っているのです。旧約の「すがる」は、新約の「とどまる」とよく似ています。信仰とは、がんばることよりも「神さまと離れないこと」なのです。
4．神さまを忘れると、祝福が逆になる
ヨシュアは、警告もしています。「異教の民と妥協すると、罠になり、落とし穴になる」（23:13）。せっかく神さまが与えてくださった祝福の土地も、神さまから離れてしまえば、逆に信仰の妨げになることもあります。そして不従順には、厳しい裁きを下される、というのですが、それはなぜでしょうか。
それは、神さまとの関係はただ仲良しのような「親しさ」だけではなく「責任のある関係」だからです。神の愛は、とても深く豊ですが、その愛には、「聖さ」つまりまじめで誠実な関係を大切にする性質もあります。だから信頼や忠実さを軽んじることに対しては、神さまも厳しいわけです。「親しさ」の中に「責任」がある、これが神さまとの関係の本質なのです。
5．誘惑はキラキラしたものに見えることもある
エバを誘惑した蛇は、ヘブル語では「輝くもの」と訳されます。つまり、魅力的な姿で現れたということです。聖書は、サタンも「光の天使のように見える」（2コリント11:14）と語っています。詐欺師が「詐欺師らしくない」からこそ騙されるように、誘惑も「良さそうに見える形」で現れるものです。
だからこそ、神さまに助けられた経験を忘れず、感謝の心を持ち続けることが、信仰を守る力になります。
結び：あなたは誰を選びますか？
ヨシュアは、告別の言葉の中で民に選びを迫りました。神さまが約束を果たしてくださったからこそ、私たちも信仰という選びをする責任があります。一宿一飯の恩義ではありませんが、信仰とは、「神さまからいただいた恩義に応えて生きること」です。主にすがることは、契約への応答であり、私たちの生き方の中心です。
今日もまた、その選びを忘れずに歩んでいきましょう。そして、あなたが関わるすべての場所――家庭や職場、学校、地域、そして教会に、神さまの祝福がありますように。

Joshua 23: God’s Promise and Our Choice
- God Keeps His Promises
Joshua 23 is the final message from Joshua, the leader of Israel, as he grew old. He says:
“The Lord has driven out great nations before you” (Joshua 23:9)
This was already promised in the time of Moses. In Deuteronomy 11, God said:
“If you hold fast to the Lord, you will take over nations stronger than you.”
So, God truly keeps His promises.
Christian teacher R.C. Sproul called this “a moment when God’s covenant becomes real in history.”
This promise is part of a bigger story in the Bible:
God promised land to Abraham → rescued His people from Egypt → gave His covenant in Deuteronomy → and fulfilled it in Joshua. - How Should We Respond to God’s Promise?
After a promise is fulfilled, we must respond.
Joshua says:
“Take the land, just as the Lord told you” (Joshua 23:5)
“Love the Lord your God” (Joshua 23:11)
Faith is not only receiving a gift. It is walking with God in trust and obedience.
A covenant is not just one-sided grace—it is a relationship that asks for a response.
Even after we say “I am saved,” we still need to grow.
Temptation and sin can return. That’s why we must choose faith every day—where we look, what we avoid, and how we live. - What Does It Mean to “Hold Fast to the Lord”?
Joshua gives a simple answer:
“Hold fast to the Lord, just as you have until now” (Joshua 23:8)
To “hold fast” means to trust God and stay close to Him.
In the New Testament, Jesus says:
“Remain in me” (John 15:4)
So the Old Testament “hold fast” and the New Testament “remain in me” are very similar.
Faith is not about trying harder—it’s about staying near to God. - If We Forget God, Blessings Can Become Traps
Joshua also gives a warning:
“If you mix with other nations and their gods, they will become traps and thorns” (Joshua 23:13)
Even good things—like land or success—can lead us away from God if we forget Him.
Deuteronomy 28 teaches: “Obedience brings blessing, disobedience brings trouble.”
Why is God strict about disobedience?
Because our relationship with Him is not only friendly—it is also responsible.
God’s love is deep, but it includes holiness. He values trust and loyalty.
So when we ignore that, He responds seriously. - Temptation Often Looks Beautiful
The snake that tempted Eve in Genesis is called “a shining one” in Hebrew.
It looked attractive.
The Bible says:
“Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14)
Just like a scam artist looks trustworthy, temptation often looks good.
That’s why we need to remember how God has helped us—and keep a thankful heart.
Gratitude helps protect our faith.
Final Thought: Who Will You Choose?
Joshua ends his message with a question.
God has kept His promise. Now, will you choose to follow Him?
Faith means living in response to God’s kindness.
To “hold fast to the Lord” is to say yes to His love and walk with Him every day.
