「困ったときの神頼み」という言葉は、聞いたことがあるでしょう。普段は自分の力で何とかなると思っていても、いざ病気やトラブルになると、急に「神様、助けて！」と祈る。そんな経験、ありませんか？
今日お話しするのは、約3000年前のイスラエルという国で起きた出来事です。そこに登場する王様も、まさに「困ったときの神頼み」をした人でした。しかし、その結果は、私たちにとって大切な教訓になっています
1．物語の中心――ヤロブアムの「変装」
北の王ヤロブアムの子が重い病気になりました。彼は、かつて自分に神の言葉を伝えた預言者アヒヤに助けを求めようとします。でも、彼は偶像の神を信じていたため、堂々と会いに行けません。そこで、自分の妻に「変装して訪ねてほしい」と頼みます。
なぜ変装？ 本音を言えば、「本当のことを知りたい。けれど、王の妻だと都合のいいことしか言ってくれないかもしれない」と思ったのでしょう。でも、神の目をごまかすことはできません。アヒヤは目が不自由でしたが、神がすでに知らせていたので、妻が来ることを知っていました。
ここで大切なポイントがあります。人は見せかけでごまかせても、神は心の中まで見抜いている、ということです。
4. 預言者の言葉――厳しさと優しさ
アヒヤはこう告げます。「あなたの家は滅びる。でも、病気の子だけは神にかなった者だから、名誉ある埋葬を受ける」。これは厳しい裁きの中にある、神の小さな憐れみです（１列王15:25-30）。
なぜこうなったのでしょう？ ヤロブアムは、神を捨てて偶像を選びました。でも、その偶像は、いざという時に何の助けにもならなかったのです。
3．ユダのレハブアム
一方でソロモン王の死後、ユダの王国は、レハブアムが支配していました。ユダ王国もまた、神に対する不信仰の故に力を失っていました。この時代に第22王朝エジプト王のシシャクがパレスチナに遠征し、パレスチナの征服を成し遂げました。その功績は、エジプトのテーベにあるカルナック神殿の壁に残されています。彼は、ガザ、アラド、アヤロン、ベテ・ホロン、ギブオン、ティルザ、ベテ・シャン、タアナク、メギドなどパレスチナの主要都市を次々に攻め落とし、ついにはエルサレムにも迫りました。
レハブアム王は、エルサレム神殿の財宝のほとんどをシシャクに明け渡すことで、エルサレムの占領を免れました。しかし、その結果、イスラエルはますます弱体化していきます。
4. 現代への問いかけ
ここで、この物語は私たちに問いかけます。私たちも「困ったときだけ神頼み」になっていませんか？普段はお金や仕事や人間関係に頼り、危機的状況に陥る、といきなり「本当に頼れるもの」を求めてしまう。その姿は、ヤロブアムとよく似ています。
さらに私たちは、「変装」して生きていないでしょうか。まわりに気に入られようとして本音を隠し、SNSでは「幸せそうな自分」を演じてしまうことがあるかもしれません。
けれども、神の前では、すべてが見抜かれています。今日のまとめとして、自分の弱さを素直に認め、静かに神の助けを求めて祈ってみましょう。「私は完璧じゃない。むしろ、助けが必要だ」と心から伝えてみてください。神は偽りではなく、正直な気持ちを持つ人を求めておられます。それでは、また明日。
Season 6: 1 Kings 14 Explained Simply – The First Kings of Israel and Judah
Have you ever heard the phrase “Praying to God only when you’re in trouble”? Many people think they can handle life on their own, but when sickness or problems come, they suddenly cry out, “God, help me!”
Today’s story happened about 3,000 years ago in Israel. A king did exactly that—he turned to God only when he was desperate. But what happened next gives us an important lesson.
1. The Main Story – Jeroboam’s Disguise
Jeroboam, the king of the northern kingdom, had a son who became very sick. He wanted help from Ahijah, a prophet who once spoke God’s word to him. But Jeroboam worshiped idols, so he didn’t want to go openly. He told his wife, “Put on a disguise and visit the prophet.”
Why a disguise? Maybe he thought, “If he knows you’re the queen, he might tell you something nice instead of the truth.” But you cannot fool God. Ahijah was old and blind, yet God had already told him about her visit.
Here is the key point: People can hide things from others, but God sees the heart.
2. The Prophet’s Message – Harsh and Kind
Ahijah said, “Your family will fall. But your sick child is pleasing to God, so he will have an honorable burial.” This was a small mercy in the middle of judgment (see 1 Kings 15:25–30).
Why did this happen? Jeroboam turned away from God and chose idols. But those idols could not help him when trouble came.
3. Rehoboam in Judah
Meanwhile, in the south, Rehoboam ruled Judah after Solomon’s death. Judah also lost strength because they turned away from God. At that time, Shishak, the king of Egypt, invaded Palestine. His victories are written on the walls of the Karnak temple in Egypt. He captured many cities and came near Jerusalem.
Rehoboam gave away most of the temple treasures to stop Shishak from taking the city. But this made the kingdom weaker and poorer.
4. A Question for Us Today
This story asks us: Do we also “pray only when we’re in trouble”? Do we trust money, work, or relationships most of the time, and then run to God only in crisis?
And another question: Are we living with a “disguise”? Trying to look perfect, hiding our real feelings, posting “happy” pictures on social media?
But before God, everything is clear. So today, let’s be honest. Say to God, “I’m not perfect. I need help.” God wants truth, not fake appearances.
Take a quiet moment and pray: “God, help me live honestly and trust You every day.”
