1．まず、時代背景を知ろう
今から約2800年前、イスラエルという国で大きな問題が起こっていました。それは、数年もの間、雨が降らないひどい干ばつです。水がなければ土地は干上がり、作物も育ちません。人はもちろん、家畜も苦しむことになりました。当時の人々は、「バアル」という神さまが雨を降らせてくれると信じていました。「バアルにお願いすれば、きっと雨が降る」と考えていたのです。
しかし、どれだけ祈っても現実には雨は降りません。国王アハブも困り果てていました。国の軍事力を支えていた馬やロバまでもが、餓死しそうなほど追い込まれていたのです。国全体が生き残れるかどうかの大きな危機でした。
2．一人の預言者が立ち上がる
そんな中、エリヤという預言者が登場します。彼は大胆な提案をしました。「本当に雨を支配するのは誰なのか、皆の前で試してみよう！」
舞台となったのはカルメル山。イスラエルの神というより、さまざまな神々の聖地とされていた場所です。そこにバアルの預言者450人と、エリヤただ一人。まるで公開実験のような場面です。
3．実験のルール
実験のルールは簡単です。祭壇にいけにえを置き、火をつけずに祈る。どちらの神が火を降らせるかで真偽を決める。
バアル側は朝から必死に祈ります。しかし、何も起きません。エリヤは皮肉を交えて言います。
「バアルは今ほかの用事があるのかもしれない。もしかしたら旅に出ているのかな？それとも寝ているのかも？」聖書では、こうしたやりとりもユーモアたっぷりに描かれています。
4．エリヤの番
日が傾き始めた夕方、エリヤは自分の祭壇にたっぷり水をかけます。火がつきにくいように、わざと難しい条件を作ったのです。そして短く祈りました。すると――天から火が降り、祭壇のいけにえも、石も、水すらも、すべて焼き尽くしてしまいました。その様子に人々は驚き、「主こそ神だ！」と叫びます。その後、長く止んでいた雨も降り始めました。
5．この物語が語ること
この出来事は、ただの昔の奇跡物語ではありません。大事なメッセージが隠されています。それは、本当に世界を支配しているのは誰か？」という問いです。古代の人たちは、古代の人たちは「雨はバアルによってもたらされる」と信じていました。けれども、この物語は「雨も火も、自然も歴史も、すべての根本を動かしているのは天地創造の聖書の神である」と語っているのです。
6．現代への問い
では、私たちは今、何に頼って生きているのでしょうか？お金？テクノロジー？運に任せている場合もあるかもしれません。もちろん、それらも大切ですが、万能ではありません。もし人生の土台が揺らいだとき、あなたはどこに本当の希望を見出すでしょうか。エリヤの物語は、現代の私たちにも、そっと問いかけてきます。「神があなたのそばにいるのなら、あなたの人生はどう変わるだろうか？」今日一日、この問いを心の片隅に置いてみませんか。ではまた明日。
Who Brings the Rain? Elijah vs. Baal on Mount Carmel
Mount Carmel in northern Israel has a statue of a prophet holding a sword. Even today, many pilgrims and tourists visit this place. Why? Because Mount Carmel is linked to a dramatic story where nature, politics, and religion all meet. Let’s look at this story and think about what it says about human faith and doubt.
1. First, the Historical Background
About 2,800 years ago, Israel faced a huge problem: a terrible drought that lasted for years. No rain meant dry land, no crops, and suffering for people and animals. At that time, people believed that a god called Baal could bring rain. They thought, “If we pray to Baal, rain will come.”
But no matter how much they prayed, the rain did not fall. King Ahab was desperate. Even the horses and donkeys used for the army were starving. The whole nation was in danger.
2. One Prophet Stands Up
Then came Elijah, a prophet. He made a bold proposal:
“Let’s find out who really controls the rain. Let’s test it in front of everyone!”
The stage was Mount Carmel, a place known as a holy site for many gods. There were 450 prophets of Baal and Elijah alone. It was like a public experiment.
3. The Rules of the Test
The rule was simple:
- Put a sacrifice on the altar.
- Do not light the fire.
- Pray, and see which god sends fire from heaven.
The prophets of Baal prayed all morning. Nothing happened. Elijah joked:
“Maybe Baal is busy? Or traveling? Or maybe he is sleeping?”
The Bible even shows this moment with humor.
4. Elijah’s Turn
In the evening, Elijah poured lots of water on his altar. He made it harder to burn. Then he prayed briefly. Suddenly—fire came down from heaven and burned everything: the sacrifice, the stones, even the water! People were shocked and shouted:
“The Lord is God!”
Soon after, the long-awaited rain finally fell.
5. What Does This Story Tell Us?
This is not just an old miracle story. It asks a big question:
“Who really rules the world?”
People thought Baal controlled the rain. But this story says:
The God who made heaven and earth controls everything—rain, fire, nature, and history.

What do we rely on today? Money? Technology? Luck? These are important, but not perfect. When life shakes your foundation, where will you find real hope?
