2．サウルとダビデの違いは何か
サウルの失敗を「性格が悪かったから」とだけ考えるのは簡単です。しかし、私たちも心のどこかで人をうらやんだり、誰かを引きずり下ろしたいと思うことがあるのではないでしょうか。では、サウルとダビデを分けたものは何だったのでしょうか。
それは「神に対する姿勢」でした。サウルは絶望の中で神に立ち返ることができませんでした。一方、ダビデは罪を犯しても、何度でも神に助けを求めました。そして神は、そのような心を退けませんでした。つまり、問題は「失敗しないこと」ではなく、「失敗したときにどこに向かうか」なのです。
3．歴史と文学の背景：サウルの最期
サウルが戦ったギルボア山は、ヨルダン渓谷を見下ろす重要な場所でした。この場所を失うことは、北イスラエルの崩壊を意味します。サウルは重傷を負い、敵に辱められることを恐れて自ら命を絶ちました。
その後、ペリシテ人はサウルの遺体をベト・シャンの城壁にさらします。これは、古代では敗者を辱めるためによく行われたことです。
しかし、ここで意外な出来事が起こります。ヤベシュ・ギルアデの人々が命がけでサウルの遺体を回収し、丁寧に葬りました。なぜ彼らはそのような行動をとったのでしょうか。

聖書には「私たちが不誠実でも、神は常に真実である」（ローマ3:3–4）と書かれています。これは、信仰を持たない人にも響く言葉ではないでしょうか。「人は裏切ることがあっても、神は決して裏切らない」というメッセージです。

サウルの姿は、現代の私たちにも重なります。SNSでの比較や成果主義、孤独感など、「もう誰も自分を見ていない」と感じる瞬間があるかもしれません。しかし、そう感じるときこそ危険信号です。
神は、あなたがどんなに失敗しても、立ち返ることを待っています。今日できることは、自分の弱さを認めること、助けを求める声をあげること、そして小さな一歩を踏み出すことです。
サウルの物語は、「どんな時も、神に向かう心が人生の流れを決める」ということを教えています。

1. Introduction: The Death of Saul
In 1 Samuel 31, we read about the last day of King Saul, the first king of Israel. This was a big turning point in Israel’s history. The battle happened on Mount Gilboa. Saul lost the fight against the Philistines and took his own life with a sword.
This is not just an old story. It makes us ask: Why did a king chosen by God die like this? Many people think, “Saul was jealous of David, so he was punished.” But the story is more complex. It also speaks to our lives today.
2. What Was the Difference Between Saul and David?
It is easy to say, “Saul failed because he had a bad character.” But don’t we also feel jealousy or want to pull others down sometimes?
So, what was the real difference between Saul and David?
It was their attitude toward God. Saul could not turn back to God when he was in despair. David sinned too, but he always returned to God and asked for help. God never rejected that heart.
The lesson is this: The question is not “Do you fail?” but “Where do you turn when you fail?”
3. The Background: Saul’s Last Day
Mount Gilboa was an important place. Losing it meant the north of Israel would fall. Saul was badly wounded and feared being shamed by the enemy, so he killed himself.
The Philistines hung his body on the wall of Beth Shan. This was a common way to shame an enemy in ancient times.
But then something surprising happened. The people of Jabesh Gilead risked their lives to take Saul’s body and bury it with honor. Why? Because Saul had once saved them (1 Samuel 11).
This small story shows something big: Even when people fail, God can still work through others to show loyalty and kindness.
4. God’s Faithfulness and Human Weakness
Saul’s story is not just a sad ending. God gave him many chances to return. But Saul chose another way—he even asked a medium for help. In the end, despair won.
Still, God did not forget Saul. He moved the people of Jabesh to honor him.
The Bible says: “Even if we are not faithful, God remains faithful” (Romans 3:3–4). People may fail, but God does not.
5. A Lesson for Us Today
Saul’s story feels close to us. Today, many people feel pressure—on social media, at work, or in life. Sometimes we think, “No one cares about me anymore.” That is a dangerous moment.
But God waits for us to turn back, no matter how many times we fail.
