1．テサロニケの人々への願いと祈り（3:1-5）
テサロニケの手紙第二は、短く3章で終わりですが、最後にパウロは、自分のために、祈るようにお願いをしています。祈祷課題として挙げられたのは二つのことです。
第一に、福音が早く広まること。「早く広まる」は、ギリシア語では、競技場で走る様を意味しています。全力疾走しているイメージです。第二に自分と同労者の身の安全が守られるように、です（2節）。確かにそれは必要な祈りでした。しかし、守りを必要としているのは、パウロのみならず、テサロニケの人々も同じです。そこで3節、パウロは、主の真実さを強調し、テサロニケの信徒に対する配慮も忘れません。信仰者は、お互いに支え合うことをもってよしとするのです。4節「私たちが命じること」は、おそらくこれから語る6節以降のことを指していると思われますが、いずれにせよ、キーワードは忍耐です。教会が教会として立ち、主の栄光を現わしていくのに、必要なのは、私たちの忍耐、そして祈りです（5節）。
2．テサロニケの人々への命令（3:6-13）
そこで6節、パウロは、怠惰で、聖書の教えに従おうとしないような者とは距離を置くように語ります。怠惰に暮らす、それは、具体的に、キリストの再臨が間近と主張して、日々の仕事を放棄している人々のことを指していました。
私は思いますが、信仰に熱心であるのはよい、しかし、それを言い訳にして、本来果たさなければいけない責任を後回しにしたり、実質放棄したりしてしまうようなことがあってはならないのではないか、と。具体的に言えば、家庭、会社で、色々と面倒なことはあるかと思います。そこで奉仕があるからと、奉仕に逃げてしまうこともあるのではないでしょうか。そこが意識できている人とそうでない人がいるのはもちろん、結果、それも一種の怠惰に過ぎません。
すでにパウロは、第一の手紙でそのような人たちを戒めています（4:9-12）。しかし、彼らはパウロの警告に聞き従いませんでした。そこで彼はもう一度戒めるのです。余計なおせっかいばかり焼いていないで、落ち着いて仕事をしなさい、と。大切なのは、今の生活が、そのまま天の御国の生活につながるような誠実さに生きていくことです。一見熱心でありながら、どこか逃口上の熱心さなど、偽善的で、人に対する証にはなりません。
パウロは、そのような怠惰な人々に警告すると同時に、そうでない忠実な人々にも、「あながたがは、たゆまず良い働きをしなさい」と勧めます。「良い働き」と訳されたギリシア語の意味は、慈善ではなく、公平なふるまい、高貴な働きを意味します。つまり、いつも、ただ誠実であるというのではなく、神を頷かせる、よい働きをしなさい、ということでしょう。
そして14節、先に、怠惰な生活をする人とは距離を置きなさいと命じていましたが、ここでは、敵と見てはいけないと加えます。異分子と思われ排除する、村八分にする、これが世の在り方でしょう。しかし教会は違います。問題は問題として理解しながら、愛を持って兄弟として諭していく。教会は人を建て上げていく場です。神がいつかわからせてくださると、信じて、関わりを続けていく。信仰がなければ、そのような関わりは難しいことです。
やはり教会は、神がおられるところ、神の業が起こるところです。怠惰な暮らしをするような人も、神にあって変えられて誠実な暮らしをする人になる、そのような奇跡が起こる場というべきでしょう。

2 Thessalonians 3 Warning to the Uncircumcised
1. petitions and prayers for the Thessalonians (3:1-5)
The second letter to the Thessalonians is short, ending with three chapters, but at the end Paul makes a request to pray for himself. Two things were mentioned as prayer requests.
First, that the gospel would spread quickly. The Greek word for “spreading the word quickly” means “running on the playing field. It is an image of running at full speed. Second, for the personal safety of myself and my fellow workers (v. 2). Certainly that was a necessary prayer. But it is not only Paul who needs protection, but also the Thessalonians. So, in verse 3, Paul emphasizes the Lord’s truthfulness and his concern for the Thessalonian believers. Verse 4, “what we command” probably refers to what follows in verse 6, but in any case, the key word is perseverance. For the church to stand as a church and manifest the glory of the Lord, all that is needed is our patience and prayer (v. 5).
2. command to the Thessalonians (3:6-13)
So in verse 6, Paul speaks of distancing ourselves from those who are lazy and unwilling to follow the teachings of the Bible. Living in idleness, he was specifically referring to those who claim that Christ’s return is imminent and abandon their daily tasks.
However, I think that it is good to be zealous in one’s faith, but that it should not be used as an excuse to postpone or virtually abandon the responsibilities that one should fulfill. To be more specific, I think that there are many things that are troublesome at home and at work. So I think there are times when we run away from service because we have service to do. There are those who are aware of this and those who are not, and as a result it is just a kind of laziness.
Paul warned such people in his first letter (4:9-12). But they did not heed Paul’s warning. So he warns them again. Don’t be so nosy; calm down and do your work. The important thing is to live with such sincerity that your present life leads directly to the life of the kingdom of heaven. Such seemingly zealous but somewhat escapist zeal is hypocritical and is not a witness to others.
Paul warns against such lazy people, but at the same time he encourages the believers who are not so lazy to “do good works without ceasing. The Greek word translated “good works” does not mean charity, but rather just or noble behavior. In other words, he is not saying to be faithful all the time, but to do good works that will make God nod in approval.
And in verse 14, where he had earlier commanded us to keep our distance from those who live idle lives, he adds here that we are not to be seen as enemies. The world would see them as aliens and exclude them or even cut them off from the community. But the Church is different. While we understand problems as problems, we admonish them with love as brothers. The church is a place where people are built up. We continue to be involved, believing that God will one day make us understand. Without faith, such involvement is difficult.
After all, the church is where God is and where God’s work happens. It should be a place where such miracles happen, where even those who live lazy lives are transformed by God and become people who live faithful lives.
