1．それぞれの信仰（11:1-40）
信仰は、「望んでいることを保証し、目に見えないものを確信させる」ものです。それは、私たちの生活に具体的に適用すると、どういうことを言うのでしょうか。ヘブルの著者は、旧約聖書の具体的な例を挙げながら説明していきます。
第一に、信仰によって、私たちは世界が神によって造られたと気づくのだと言います。天地創造論は、頭で考えて理解し受け入れるようなものではありません。神の存在に気づけば、自然に受け入れられることです。それは信仰によって受け止めるべきことです。
第二に、信仰によって、アベルは正しく礼拝をしたと言います（4節）。礼拝は献身です。今日の説教はよかった、いやなんかパンチに欠けていた、と説教を聞きに行く時ではありません。それは、信仰によって自分が神を第一としていることを明らかにする行為です。
第三に、信仰によって、エノクは神に喜ばれる生き方をしたと言います（5節）。神を喜び、神を愛する歩みをするのは、信仰者だけです。信仰者は、神がおられること、神は、求める者には報いてくださる方であることを覚えながら人生を歩むのです。
第四に、信仰によって、ノアは、家族を救い、全世界に神のことばの正しさを示したと言います（7節）。キリスト者はイエスの再臨を待ち望む信仰に生きています。世に神のことばの正しさを示すのは、信仰に生きるキリスト者の家族に他なりません。そして信仰に生きる父親は、厳しい時代に、家族を救うことになるのです。
第五に、信仰によって、古代イスラエルの族長たちは、人生を生き抜いたと言います。彼らは、神のみこころに従う人生を歩んだのです（8節）。彼らは、目に見えない神に手引きされ、神の可能性にかけて生きた人々でした。そして、彼は、神の助けと恵みを味わいながら人生を歩んでいくのです。人は自分の計画したこと、努力したことが最善となると信じて歩んでいます。しかし、人間の一生は、個人の思惑を超えた歩みなのです。
第六に、信仰によって、旧約時代のイスラエルの指導者モーセは、敢えて難しい人生に挑戦したと言います（23節）。エジプトの王子であったモーセは、王宮の安楽な生活で一生を終えることもできました。しかし、彼は、敢えて奴隷として苦しんでいたイスラエルの民と共に生きる道を選んだのです。信仰は、私たちの目を開き、目先のはかない楽しみを超えた、偉大な人生と富に気づきを与えます。そして神により頼んで、歩み続ける者に、神の力を味わう人生を得させるのです。
第七に、信仰によって、ラハブは、時代の動きの中で、神を受け入れたと言います。彼女は、イスラエル人が約束の地パレスチナに戻って、エリコの町を取り戻そうとした際に、重要な役割を演じました（30-31節）彼女は遊女で、イスラエルの敵側にいました。しかし彼女は、イスラエルの神について色々な噂を聞き、「あなた方の神、主は、上は天、下は地において神であられる」（ヨシュア2:11）と時代の流れの中に、その神の存在と意思を認めました。神はそのラハブの信仰を目に留めて、戦争の惨禍の中で彼女が助けだされるようにされたのです。
へブルの著者は、これ以外にも、信仰の例はあげればきりがない、とまとめます。信仰は、それぞれの人生にそれぞれの祝福をもたらしました。「望んでいることを保証し、目に見えないものを確信させる」信仰によって生きるなら、あなたの人生も変わるのです。

Hebrews 11 Walking by faith
1. faith in everyone (11:1-40)
Faith “assures us of what we hope for and convicts us of what we do not see. What does this mean when applied specifically to our lives? The author of Hebrews goes on to explain with specific examples from the Old Testament.
First, he says that by faith we know that the world was created by God. Creationism is not something we can understand and accept in our minds. It is something that we naturally accept once we realize the existence of God. It is something we accept by faith.
Second, by faith we say that Abel worshiped properly (v.4). Worship is devotion. It is not a time to go to a sermon and say, “Today’s sermon was good, or it lacked punch. It is an act of revealing by faith that you put God first.
Third, by faith, Enoch says he lived a life pleasing to God (v. 5). It is only the believer who walks in a way that delights God and loves God. The believer goes through life remembering that God is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Fourth, Noah says that by faith he saved his family and showed the whole world the righteousness of God’s Word (v. 7). The Christian lives by faith and looks forward to the return of Jesus. It is the family of a Christian who lives by faith that shows the world the truth of God’s Word. And a father who lives by faith will save his family in difficult times.
Fifth, the ancient Israelite leaders lived their lives by faith. They lived lives of obedience to God’s will (v.8). They were people who were led by the unseen God and lived up to His potential. And he would go on with his life, enjoying God’s help and grace. People go on believing that what they plan and strive for is the best they can do. But human life is a journey that transcends individual speculation.
Sixth, by faith, Moses, the leader of Israel in the Old Testament era, dared to live a difficult life (v. 23). As a prince of Egypt, Moses could have ended his life in the comfort of the royal palace. But he dared to choose to live with the Israelites who were suffering as slaves. Faith opens our eyes and makes us aware of the greatness of life and the riches beyond the fleeting pleasures of the immediate. And it gives those who continue to walk in dependence on God a life that tastes of the power of God.
Seventh, by faith, Rahab says she accepted God in the midst of the movement of the times. She played a key role in the Israelites’ attempt to return to the promised land of Palestine and reclaim the city of Jericho (vv. 30-31). But she heard many rumors about the God of Israel, and in time she recognized His presence and His will: “The Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below” (Joshua 2:11). God took note of Rahab’s faith and caused her to be rescued from the horrors of war.
The author of Hebrews sums up the examples of faith as endless. Faith has brought its own blessings to each life. If you live by faith, which “assures you of what you hope for and convinces you of what you do not see,” your life will be transformed.
