2．サムエルの誠実なリーダー像
サムエルは、自分がどのような指導者だったかを振り返ります。「私は誰かから不正にお金を取ったことがあるか？わいろを受け取ったことがあるか？」と民に問いかけると、民は「ありません」と答えます。つまり、サムエルは神のことばに従い（申命記16:18–20）、誠実で公正なリーダーであったことがわかります。
このことは、現代の政治や組織にも通じる話です。リーダーに必要なのは、能力だけでなく、誠実さと公正さです。サムエルはその模範を示しました。
3．神の誠実さとイスラエルの歴史
続いてサムエルは、イスラエルの歴史を振り返ります。エジプトからの脱出、荒野の旅、約束の地への定住、それらすべての場面で、神は民を助けてきました。しかし、民は何度も神を忘れ、他の神々に心を向けてしまいます。その結果、苦しみが訪れます。けれども、民が悔い改めて神に助けを求めると、神はいつも応えてくださいました。士師記に見られる「罪→苦しみ→悔い改め→救い」のサイクルは、神のあわれみの深さを物語っています。
神は「契約を守る方」であり、「あわれみ深い方」です。人が変わっても、神は変わらない、これが聖書のメッセージです。
4．王を求めた民と、神の対応
イスラエルの民は「他の国のように王がほしい」と願いました。これは、神の直接的な導きを拒み、人間の力に頼ろうとした行動です。サムエルは悲しみますが、神は怒りにまかせて民を見捨てることはありません。神は「あなたがたも、王も、神を恐れ、神に仕え、神の声に従うなら、それでよい」（12:14）と語ります。つまり、王がいても、神に従うことが大切なのです。
申命記17章には、王に求められる条件が書かれています。王は神の教えを毎日読み、民の上に高ぶってはなりません。王もまた、神のしもべなのです。
5．神の力を示す奇跡とサムエルの警告
サムエルは、神の力を民に示すために、ある「奇跡」を祈り求めます。それは、小麦の刈り入れ時（雨がほとんど降らない時期）に、雷雨を起こすことでした。実際に雷雨が起こり、民は驚き、恐れます。これは「神は本当に生きておられる」という証拠です。また、サムエルが神に聞き従う預言者であることの証でもあります。
サムエルは「主に従い、心を尽くして仕えなさい。主がどれほど偉大なことをなさったかを見分けなさい」と語ります。王に従うこと以上に、神に従うことが民の祝福の鍵である、このメッセージは、今も変わりません。
6．現代への教訓：見えない神に頼るとは？
サウルは、神の下に立つ王として選ばれました。しかし、その立場を忘れたとき、王としての力は揺らぎ始めます。これは、民の弱さでもあり、私たち自身の姿でもあります。
現代の私たちも、神よりも「目に見えるもの」に頼りがちです。お金、地位、テクノロジー、人間関係、不安になると、ついそれらにしがみつきたくなります。しかし、信仰とは「見えない神の最善を信じて歩むこと」です。助けてくださるのは神であり、助け手を送ってくださるのも神です。だからこそ、私たちは「神がなさった偉大なこと」を見分け、神に期待して生きるべきなのです。
7．まとめ
サムエルの告別説教は、誠実なリーダーとは何か、神はどんな方か、私たちは誰に頼って生きるべきかを教えてくれます。

— What Does It Mean to Trust in God?
1. Introduction
The people of Israel were led by judges for many years. Samuel was the last of these judges. In this chapter, Samuel finishes his role and passes leadership to King Saul.
But this is not just a retirement speech. Samuel speaks to the people about their relationship with God.
“Who do you trust in your life?” This question is not only for ancient Israel—it is also for us today.
2. Samuel’s Honest Leadership
Samuel looks back on his time as a leader. He asks the people, “Did I ever take money unfairly? Did I accept bribes?” The people answer, “No.”
This shows that Samuel was honest and fair, following God’s command in Deuteronomy 16:18–20.
Even today, leaders need more than skills—they need honesty and fairness. Samuel is a good example of this kind of leadership.
3. God’s Faithfulness in Israel’s History
Samuel reminds the people of their history. God helped them escape Egypt, travel through the desert, and settle in the promised land.
But many times, the people forgot God and followed other gods. This brought trouble.
Still, when they repented and asked God for help, He always answered.
The pattern in Judges—sin, suffering, repentance, and rescue—shows God’s deep mercy.
God is faithful and full of grace. People may change, but God does not. This is a key message of the Bible.
4. The People Asked for a King—God’s Response
The people of Israel wanted a king, like other nations. This meant they rejected God’s direct leadership and trusted human power instead.
Samuel was sad, but God did not abandon them.
God said, “If you and your king fear the Lord, serve Him, and obey His voice, it will be well” (1 Samuel 12:14).
Even with a king, following God is what matters most.
In Deuteronomy 17, God gives rules for kings. A king must read God’s law daily and not become proud.
Even a king is a servant of God.
5. A Miracle and Samuel’s Warning
To show God’s power, Samuel prayed for a miracle. He asked for thunder and rain during the wheat harvest—a time when it usually doesn’t rain.
God answered, and the people were amazed and afraid.
This miracle proved that God is real and that Samuel is His prophet.
Samuel said, “Follow the Lord. Serve Him with all your heart. See the great things He has done.”
Obeying God is more important than obeying a king. This message is still true today.
6. A Lesson for Today: Trusting the Invisible God
Saul was chosen to be king under God’s authority. But when he forgot that, his power began to weaken.
This shows the weakness of the people—and also our own weakness.
Today, we often trust in things we can see: money, status, technology, relationships.
When we feel afraid, we want something solid to hold on to.
But faith means trusting in the best plan of the invisible God.
God is the one who helps us. He also sends helpers.
So we should look at the great things God has done and live with hope in Him.
