2. Joab’s Rise and the Change in Power
Israel once had a “United Kingdom” under three kings: Saul, David, and Solomon. But even in David’s time, unity was breaking.
David tried to keep the north and south together, but after Absalom’s revolt, the division grew deeper. In chapter 20, David no longer leads the army. Joab, his general, takes control.
Joab was skilled but often ignored the king’s orders. He killed Abner (2 Sam 3:27), Absalom (2 Sam 18:14), and Amasa (2 Sam 20:10). Before David died, he told Solomon: “Do not let Joab die in peace” (1 Kings 2:6).
