1．上司に「人生を左右するお願い」を言えますか
あなたには、「これを言ったら場の空気が変わってしまう」とわかっているような、大切なお願いはありますか。たとえば、進路や転職、家族に関することでしょう。相手が上司でも先生でも親でも、「今言うべきか、もう少し待つべきか」と迷うことはありませんか。
ネヘミヤ記2章は、まさにそうした瞬間を描く物語です。主人公のネヘミヤは、王の前で自分の人生を左右する大きなお願いをします。ただし、彼は思いつきで訴えるのではありません。彼は「祈りながら、具体的に準備して」伝えるのです。ここが大切なポイントです。
2．本章の位置づけと構造
ネヘミヤ記2章は、1章の「嘆きと祈り」から、実際の「派遣と再建」へと物語が動き出す転換点です。舞台はペルシア帝国で、アルタクセルクセス王の治世と年代が具体的に記されています。次の5つの段落に分けて読むと理解しやすくなります。
2:1–8「王宮で与えられた機会」王がネヘミヤの表情の変化に気づき、ネヘミヤは恐れながらも短く祈り、エルサレム再建のために具体的な許可を願い出ます。ここで重要なのは「天の神」と「神の恵みの御手」という言葉です。
2:9–10「旅とさっそく始まる反発」ネヘミヤのエルサレム到着は、その地の利害関係者に大きな影響を与えます。
2:11–16「夜の視察：現状の確認」ネヘミヤは到着後、再建計画を立てるため、夜に城壁の状態を調べます。これが再建への第一歩でした。
2:17–18「民への呼びかけ：恥辱からの回復」ネヘミヤは仲間に現状を伝え、再建への協力を呼びかけます。ここで「神の恵みの御手」と王の言葉を示すと、人々は意欲を持って応じます。
2:19–20「嘲笑と疑いへの応答」反対する者たちは、ネヘミヤたちの計画を「反逆」と非難し、政治問題にしようとしました。しかし、ネヘミヤは神が導く業であることを主張し、信仰に立った姿勢をはっきりと示します。
3．弱い共同体に「神の手は止まっていない」
この書を最初に読んだ人々は、帰還後の困難を経験した世代や、その体験を受け継いだ世代でした。そのため、彼らは崩れた城壁への不安や外部からの圧力を、単なる過去の物語ではなく「自分たちの現実」と重ねて読んだはずです。つまりこのテキストは、「成功の秘訣」を語るためではなく、自分たちを見捨てない「神の恵み」が確かであることを伝えています。
ですから2章は、単に出来事を記録したのではなく、2度も「神の恵みの御手」という言葉を使い、再建の許可（2:8）や人々の協力（2:18）が得られたことを強調します。王の厚意や公文書、木材の手配などは、きまぐれな幸運ではなく「神が歴史を動かしている」という信仰の理解へと読者を導いているのです。
また、ネヘミヤが夜に町を調査する場面は、「祈り」を持ちながらも現実をしっかりと見て進む姿を印象づけます（2:11–16）。祈る人こそ、現実から逃げずに考え、必要な手順を踏みます。その着実さが、共同体を再建へと導いたのだ、と当時の読者は読み取れたでしょう。
４．現代の私たちへの霊的なススメ：祈りは「現実を見て、愛をもって動く力」
最後に、現代の私たちがこの物語から学べることをまとめます。
第一に、祈りは現実から目をそらすのではなく、現実に向き合うためのものです。ネヘミヤはエルサレムの苦しみを知って「何とかしたい」と願いましたが、すぐに仕事を辞めて現地へ向かったわけではありません。まず祈り、願いを具体的にし、神の最適なタイミングを待ちました。さらに現地では自分で歩き回り、「どこから、何を、どの順番で進めるか」を細かく確認します。神は、私たちの知恵や計画、現実的な行動を大切にされます。神の愛は、私たちを甘やかす愛ではなく、私たちを立ち上がらせる愛なのです。
第二に、神の導きは、奇跡のような一度きりの出来事ではなく、歴史の中で少しずつ形になるものです。2章には「書状」「木材」「護衛」「移動」と、非常に現実的な話が多く出てきます。しかし本文は、それを「神の御手」による導きだと読み直しています。神は気まぐれに動くのではなく、約束に忠実であり、私たちの一つ一つの行動を導いてくださるお方です。
第三に、再建の目的は自分自身の成功ではなく、共同体の回復です。ネヘミヤは仲間に「恥辱からの回復」を語りました。現代の家族や職場、教会や地域にも「破れ」といえる部分があるものです。神は聖なる方なので、壊れたままにしてはおかれません。ネヘミヤ記が伝えるのは、自己中心でなく、共同体を思う愛をもって行動することの大切さだと言えるでしょう。
そして、反対や誤解が出たときのネヘミヤの対応も見逃せません。彼は「天の神が成功させてくださる」と信じ、神の主権や誠実さ、愛に信頼しました。物事がうまくいく保証はなくても、だからこそ最後まで神を信頼することが大切なのです。もしあなたが「言いにくいお願い」や「立て直したい現実」を抱えているなら、まずは短く祈り、現実を見て、そして小さくても一歩踏み出してみてください。神の御手は、私たちが気づかないうちに、しかし確かに働いているのです。また明日、お会いしましょう。
Nehemiah 2: Nehemiah Works for the Rebuilding of Jerusalem
1. Nehemiah’s Prayer
Nehemiah heard about the hard situation in Jerusalem, and he wanted to do something about it. But he did not quit his job as the cupbearer right away and go to Jerusalem. He prayed, and he waited for God’s time. Then time passed, and there was a gap of waiting.
At that time, King Artaxerxes noticed a change in Nehemiah’s face and heart. A cupbearer was, in a sense, like a taster for the king’s food and drink. If the cupbearer looked serious or sad in front of the king, the king would not feel calm. But this moment became an opportunity that God gave. God gave the king, who trusted Nehemiah, a chance to ask what was in Nehemiah’s heart.
Then Nehemiah answered “after praying to the God of heaven.” The God of the Bible is “the God of heaven.” He is not only “a god.” He is the God above Israel and also above Persia, above all nations. In other words, he rules even the thoughts of the pagan king Artaxerxes and can move his heart. Nehemiah prayed because he wanted the king to understand each word he would say and to give the best help. And the king did understand. God gave power to the words of Nehemiah’s prayer, and God helped the king accept those words, so that things could move forward.
2. Nehemiah Comes to Jerusalem
In this way, Nehemiah came to Jerusalem with the king’s understanding and kindness. One night, Nehemiah got up. Then he walked around the ruins of Jerusalem alone. He went around the broken walls. When he went toward the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, the piles of stones and rubble were so high that he could not go any farther. As he checked the city by himself, he was surely praying that God would give him wisdom for how to rebuild. He also thought carefully. He thought about what to do and how to do it, and where to begin.
God has given us minds that can think. It is not true that a road opens just because we pray. When we think in a concrete way and keep thinking deeply, a road opens for us. So, when we face a hard problem, we should pray and expect God’s great work. At the same time, we should think deeply about how to overcome the problem. With prayer and careful thinking, we should think clearly, organize things, and then face the task.
3. Nehemiah Starts the Rebuilding Work
In this way, Nehemiah checked what had to be done (verse 11). Then he spoke to the leaders and said, “Come, let us rebuild.” Then the work began. A person who believes in God does not rush in a panic. What God wants to do will surely be fulfilled, so we can work with patience and steady hearts. If we do the ordinary things we should do, we will later see that things are moving in the way God planned.
While we move forward, we may feel sad or worried at times. But each time, we are supported by God’s word, and we keep doing God’s work. So today, I pray that this will be a good day.©Dr. Makoto
