「神に従う」と口で言いながら、実は神から主導権を奪って、自分本位に信仰をカスタマイズしてしまう、これは、古代イスラエルの王ヤロブアムが行ったことにとてもよく似ています。
1. 何が起きたのか？ ― 王国の分裂と新しい祭壇
舞台は約3000年前のイスラエル。偉大なソロモン王が亡くなった後のことです。息子のレハブアムが王位を継承します。この機会にイスラエルの人々は、かつてエジプトに亡命していた有能な官僚ヤロブアムを呼び戻し、レハブアム王に重税の緩和を求めました。しかしその話し合いはまとまらず、国は二つに分かれてしまいます。おそらく、ヤロブアムの背後にはイスラエルの弱体化を狙うエジプトの支援があったとも考えられます。
こうして南のユダ王国はレハブアムが、北のイスラエル王国はヤロブアムが治めることになりました。その後ヤロブアム王はこう考えました。「もし人々がエルサレム（南の都）に礼拝に行き続けたら、心も南に戻ってしまうかもしれない。そうなれば、私は王座を失うかもしれない。」
そこで彼は、新しい礼拝の仕組みを作ります。エルサレムまで行かなくてもいいように、ベテルとダンという町に礼拝所を設置。そこに金の子牛像を置き、「これがあなたの神だ」と宣言しました。さらに、祭司や祭日も勝手に決めてしまったのです。
「遠くまで行かなくていい」「時間やお金もかからない」「みんなで楽に礼拝できる」――こうした理由は一見、みんなのためによさそうに聞こえます。しかし実は、ヤロブアム王が自分の王国を守るために考えたことであり、自分の都合で信仰のルールを変えてしまう、神を軽んじる心が潜んでいました。
2. その結果は？
実際聖書も、この出来事をこう評価しています。「このことは罪となった」（列王記第一12:30）。なぜ罪なのでしょう？
第一に、神が決められた礼拝の中心（エルサレム）を無視したからです。
第二に、神の存在を軽んじて、自分を中心に信仰を作り変えたからです。
つまり、ヤロブアムは、「神に従う」ふりをしながら、実は「自分の都合を守る」ために信仰を利用してしまいました。
3. ここから見える原則
ここで、私たち自身を振り返ってみましょう。「私たちも、自分の都合に合わせた信仰をしていないだろうか？」「困ったときだけ神に祈る」「忙しいから、祈る時間は後でいいや」とスケジュールのあまりで対応する。「この聖書のことば、心に響く大好き」と執着するが、不都合な箇所や面倒なところは読まない。「礼拝に参加していればいい」と普段の生活では全く信仰とは関係のない生き方になる。このような信仰の持ち方は珍しくはありません。しかしこれでは、神を「自分のための便利な存在」にしてしまい、神を神として敬う心が薄れていきます。
4. 神が求めるのは「関係」
聖書の神は、私たちと関わりたいと望んでいます。人間関係ではお互いの主導権の衝突がよく起こりますが、神との関係にも同じことが言えます。ただイエス・キリストはこう言われました。「すべて疲れた人、重荷を負っている人は、わたしのところに来なさい。休ませてあげます。」（マタイ11:28）。神は私たちに対して主導権を主張しているわけではありませんが、同時に都合のよい存在になると言っているわけでもありません。神は、「あなたを愛しているから、あなたを招く」と言っています。つまり、神との関係は、損得勘定を超えた愛と信頼で結ばれたものです。神は願いを叶えるだけの魔法使いではなく、人生を正しく導いてくれる親しい友のような存在なのです。
5. 今日の私たちへの招き
神は、あなたを愛し、あなたの人生に意味や希望を与えたいと願っています。神に心を開くことは、すぐに「得」とは感じられないかもしれません。それでも、それはあなたの人生を本質的に豊かにする最も価値ある選択になります。
ヤロブアムは、「自分の都合に合わせた信仰」、北イスラエルは「便利な信仰」を選びましたが、それは国を崩壊へと導きました。それは、私たちにも大切な教訓です。神は、あなたとの個人的な関係を求める真の友です。もし、心のどこかで、「神と共に生きていきたい」と思うところがあるなら、短く祈ってみてはどうでしょうか。「神さま、あなたを知りたいです。私の心を開きます。導いてください。」きっと神は、その小さな祈りを聞いてくださいます。そしてあなたが自分の人生を全く新しい視点で見る助けを与えてくださるでしょう。ではまた明日お会いしましょう。
Faith: My Way or God’s Way? – Lessons from 1 Kings 12
Introduction: Historical Background and Meaning
Have you ever done this? You are on a diet, but you say, “Today is special,” and eat cake. Or you say, “I’m tired today,” and skip exercise. People often change rules for their own convenience.
Faith can be the same. We say, “I follow God,” but sometimes we take control and make faith fit our own plans. This is very similar to what King Jeroboam of Israel did long ago.
1. What Happened? – The Division of the Kingdom and New Altars
About 3,000 years ago, after King Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked him to make their heavy taxes lighter. But the talks failed, and the nation split into two:
- The south (Judah) with Rehoboam as king
- The north (Israel) with Jeroboam as king
Jeroboam thought, “If people go to Jerusalem in the south to worship, they may turn back to Rehoboam. Then I will lose my throne.”
So he made a new system of worship:
- Two new worship places in Bethel and Dan
- Golden calves as symbols, saying, “Here are your gods”
- He even chose priests and festivals by himself
It looked practical: “No need to travel far,” “It saves time and money,” “Everyone can worship easily.” But the real reason was to protect his power. He changed God’s rules for his own benefit.
2. The Result
The Bible says: “This thing became a sin” (1 Kings 12:30).
Why?
- First, Jeroboam ignored God’s command about worship in Jerusalem.
- Second, he made faith about himself, not about God.
He pretended to follow God, but he used faith for his own plans.
3. What About Us?
Do we do the same?
- Pray only when we have problems
- Say, “I’m too busy to pray today”
- Love Bible verses that feel good, but ignore the hard ones
- Go to church on Sunday, but live the rest of the week without God
This is common. But when we do this, we make God a “tool for our convenience,” not the Lord of our life.
4. What God Wants: A Relationship
God wants a real relationship with us. In any relationship, there can be a fight for control. It is the same with God.
But Jesus said:
“Come to me, all you who are tired and have heavy loads. I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
This does not mean Jesus will do everything your way. It means:
“I love you, so I invite you.”
Faith is not about profit or loss. It is about love and trust. God is not a magic tool to make life easy. He is a friend who guides us in the right way.
5. Today’s Invitation
God loves you and wants to give your life meaning and hope. Opening your heart to God may not feel “convenient,” but it is the most valuable choice you can make.
Jeroboam chose “faith for his own benefit,” and it destroyed his nation. That is a warning for us. God wants a personal relationship with you.
If you feel, “I want to walk with God,” you can pray like this:
“God, I want to know you. I open my heart. Please guide me.”
God will hear this small prayer and help you see life in a new way.
