5章　将軍ナアマンの癒し

1．ナアマンの病

アラムの将軍ナアマンが、重い皮膚病に悩んでいました。そんな彼に、イスラエルから連れて来られた女奴隷が助言をするのです。「もし、ご主人様がサマリアにいる預言者のところに行かれたら、きっと、その方がご主人様のツァラアトを治してくださるでしょう。」（3節）この女奴隷には確信がありました。あの神の人エリシャができることへの確信です。彼女は、「きっと」あの人にはできる、と確信していたのです。

エリシャの評判は、イスラエルの庶民の末端にまでも浸透していたと思わされるところです。列王記の著者は、先の4章で、エリシャを通して神がどのような方かを切々と語っていました。まことの神の存在はエリシャを通して、イスラエルの誰の目にも明らかにされていたのです。ともあれ、ナアマンは、この女奴隷のことばに動かされてイスラエルへと向かいました。

他方イスラエルの王は、ナアマンが持ってきたアラムの王の親書を読み「服を引き裂いた」と言います（8節）。ナアマンが頼ってきたのは、イスラエルのまことの神でしたが、その神を認めない王にとって、その手紙は不可能な要求、ある意味でケンカを売るような手紙と読めたのでしょう。

2．ナアマンの癒し

神の人エリシャが、その状況を知ると、使者を遣わして、自分の下へ招き、神のことばを伝えました。それは、癒しのためにヨルダン川に三度身を沈めるようにというものでした。ナアマンは自分が癒されるために、ある種のイメージを抱いていたようです。エリシャの手によって魔術的な行為が行われる、と。しかしそうではありませんでした。彼は、汚れたヨルダン川に身を沈めるように勧められたのです。神のことばは、しばしば、私たちの思いに反するものであったりします。私たちの先入観や自己中心な願いを捨てずには、受け入れられないものであったりします。そこで彼の思慮深いしもべは助言をしています。「わが父よ。難しいことを、あの預言者が命じたのでしたら、あなたはきっとそれをなさったのではありませんか。あの人は『身を洗ってきよくなりなさい』と言っただけではありませんか」（13節）

彼は「ただ」言っただけではありませんか。神は難しい注文をすることはありません。神の祝福に与るために求められることは実に単純なことです。ただ、十字架でイエスが私たちのためにしてくださったことに信頼するだけ、神の業に信頼し続けるだけです。福音宣教は、その簡単な救いを語ることに他なりません。福音も福音宣教も実に単純なものです。しかし、実際には、この単純な福音を難しくしてしまう人や単純なものを単純に語る勇気に欠けている人が多いのです（1コリント1:18）。

3．ナアマンの決心

後半、異教的な環境でいかにまことの神を信じる信仰を持つか、一つの事例が描かれています。ナアマンはイスラエルの神への忠誠を誓いました。ただ職務上、アラムの神リモンの礼拝に加わらなくてはなりませんでした。そこで形として「ひれ伏すこと」を容認してほしいとエリシャに願っています。エリシャは「安心して行きなさい（19節）」と答えましたが、これは単に「さようなら」と訳せることばで、必ずしも承認したと言えるものではありません。結局大事なことは、信仰に基づく行動というのは、個人の確信から出てくるものである、ということです。他人がどうこう言うことに合わせていくようなものではありません。あなた自身が神の前に良心を責められることない在り方を確信を持ってすべきことだ、というわけです。

最後にゲハジの教訓があります。神のしもべであっても、神から遠く心離れた者がいるのです。人は、表向き立派な信仰者に見えながら、内実はそうではない、ということがあるものです。今の生は、神に仕える時であり、銀や金を受け取る時ではない。そこにしっかり立ちうるかどうか、信仰者は、そこを問われているのです。まことに神に仕えていく歩みをしてまいりましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 5 Healing of General Naaman

1. sickness of Naaman

The Aramean general Naaman was suffering from a serious skin disease. A female slave brought from Israel gives him advice. “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” (ver. 3)  She is the conviction of what Elisha, the man of God, can do. She was sure that he could do it.

Elisha’s reputation seems to have permeated even the lowest level of the common people of Israel. In the previous four chapters of Kings, the author of Kings was telling us what kind of person God is through Elisha. The existence of the true God was revealed to everyone in Israel through Elisha. At any rate, Naaman was moved to Israel by the words of the slave girl.

On the other hand, the king of Israel reads the personal letter of the king of Aram brought by Naaman and says, “He tore his clothes” (v. 8). Naaman relied on the true God of Israel, but for the king who did not recognize that God, the letter would have been read as an impossible request, a letter that would sell a fight in a sense.

2. Healing of Naaman

When Elisha the man of God learned of the situation, he sent messengers to invite him to come and tell him the word of God. He was instructed to immerse himself in the Jordan River three times for healing. Naaman seems to have had some sort of image in mind for himself to be healed. Magical acts are performed by the hand of Elisha. But it wasn’t. He was advised to drown in the filthy Jordan River. God’s Word often goes against our thoughts. Without throwing away our preconceived notions and self-centered wishes, there are things that cannot be accepted. There his wise servant advises. “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, `Wash and be cleansed’!” (ver. 13) “Didn’t he just say that?” God does not give difficult orders. What is required to partake of God’s blessing is really simple. Just trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross, and continue to trust in God’s work. Gospel preaching is nothing more than speaking of that simple salvation. Both the gospel and evangelization are very simple. In reality, however, many people make this simple gospel difficult and lack the courage to speak simply (1 Corinthians 1:18).

3. Naaman’s resolve

In the second half, one example is drawn of how to have faith in the true God in a pagan environment. Naaman swore allegiance to the God of Israel. But he had to join the worship of Rimmon, the god of Aram, because of his duties. So he asks Elisha to allow him to “bow down” as a form. Elisha replied, “Go in peace” (v. 19), but this could simply be translated as “goodbye,” and he did not necessarily approve of it. Ultimately, the important thing is that faith-based action comes from personal conviction. It’s not about following what other people say. It means that you should be confident that you will not be blamed for your conscience before God.

Finally there is the lesson of Gehazi. Some of God’s servants are far from God. A person may appear to be a respectable believer on the outside, but on the inside he is not. This life is for serving God, not for receiving silver or gold. Believers are asked whether they can stand firmly there. Let us take steps to truly serve God. I hope you have a good day today.
