1. 背景
この詩篇は、その始まりと終わりにおいて、著者の思いがまるで違うように感じられます。何がこのような変化をもたらしたのか？不思議に思われます。最初は、満たされぬ思いと限界が語られ、神に訴え続ける中で、著者の心には、神に対する希望と神の救いを歌う思いが沸き起こっているのです。
1節「主よ、いつまでですか。あなたは私を永久にお忘れになるのですか。いつまで、御顔を私からお隠しになるのですか」これの祈りが、ダビデの生涯のいつ頃に献げられたのか、よくわかっていません。おそらくそれは彼が逃亡生活をしていた時のもの、と考えられていますが、はっきりとした根拠があるわけではありません。ただ、もっともらしいというわけです。実際、ダビデはその時孤独感に苛まれていました。神は私を忘れているのではないか、と神からも見放された思いになっていたのです。ダビデは神の存在を否定しません。しかし、主が自分を気にかけておられることについて確信を持てないでいました。こんなに困っているのに、神は私のことを顧みてくださらない、苛立つ気持ちを押さえられないでいました（1節）。そして、あれこれ考えても、全く何一つ先が見えてこない。何もかも空しく空回りして、ただ時が過ぎていくだけ。待てば待つほどに、神の沈黙と闇は濃くなるばかり（2節）。ただひたすら我慢させられるだけ、悲しみが増すだけである（2節）。他方、敵のすることは、何もかもうまくいく。なぜか神は、自分よりも敵の味方になっているかのようで、彼らは圧倒的な力を誇る（2節）。何とも屈辱的ではないか。いつまでこんな状況が続くのか。耐えられない。そのような状況に何か、自分自身の経験を思い起こす、あるいは今共感する、と言う人も少なくないでしょう。
2．神のあわれみにすがる
そこでダビデはどうしたのでしょうか？ダビデは、絶望のどん底の中で、なおも神に呼び求めるのです。打ちしおれた中で、敢えて声をあげて、神を呼び求め叫び続けるのです。「私に目を注ぎ、私に答えてください。私の神、主よ。私の目を明るくしてください」（3節）私が敵に打ち負かされて、先に死に、敵が勝ち誇ることのないように、と。自分の心の悩みと叫びを、そのまま神にぶつけています。まさにただ神のあわれみに寄りすがるのみというわけです。行間を読むならばそういうことでしょう。つまり「粘り勝ち」ということばがありますが、神に粘り続ける、それこそ、求められていることではないでしょうか。神は善であり、よきものを拒まれない、神の誠実さに信頼し続ける、信仰者は、その点において正しい者であることが何よりも大切なのです。そしてそのような体質、そのような忍耐力が身につくには、大変な時間を要するものでしょう。誰にも知られず一人で精進する信仰の修練の日々というものがあるのです。そこを忘れて、ただ、神は私の言うことを聞いてくださらない、と毒づくだけの甘い信仰者になってはなりません。
6節、神は「私に良くしてくださる」とあります。英訳（NEB）の聖書では、「私の願いすべてを聞き入れてくださった」と訳しています。つまり神は私の願いを聞くにとどまらず、それをはるかに超えた応答をしてくださると言います。リビングバイブル訳では「身にあまる祝福をいただき、心から主に歌います」とあります。そうであればこそ、私たちは主に歌を歌わざるを得ないという結論も出て来るでしょう。
ですから、祈りの中でいつまでですか、という思いがよぎったとしても、この試練は神の訓練の時であると受け止めて、神を信頼し、今少しと粘って祈り続けることです。神は私たちに究極の解決方法を与えてくださるお方です。その心的態度がしっかり出来ていれば全く打ちのめされた状況の中にあっても、私たちは平安と喜びを持つことができます。信仰の成熟は、普通の感覚では理解できない祝福に与らせる。神は奇蹟の神、天地創造の神です。無から有を生み出すお方、生ける神に呼ばわりましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Psalm 13: Keep Leaning on Grace

In the beginning and the end of this Psalm, the author’s thoughts seem to be very different. What brought about this change? One wonders. At first, the psalmist speaks of unfulfilled feelings and limitations, and as he continues to appeal to God, the author’s heart is filled with hope in God and a desire to sing of God’s salvation.
Verse 1: “How long, O Lord? How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” It is not known exactly when this prayer was offered during David’s life. It has been suggested that it was probably made during his time as a fugitive, but there is no clear evidence for this. It just seems plausible. In fact, David was feeling lonely at the time. He felt abandoned by God, as if God had forgotten him. David does not deny God’s existence. But he was unsure of the Lord’s care for him. He could not suppress his frustration that God did not care about him in spite of his need (v. 1). And for him, even though he thought about this and that, he could not see anything ahead at all. Everything was spinning in the air, and time was just passing him by. The longer he wait, the more God’s silence and darkness grows thicker (v. 2), and the more we are forced to endure, the more sorrowful he become (v. 2). On the other hand, everything the enemy does goes well. Somehow God seems to be on the side of the enemy rather than himself, and they boast of their overwhelming power (v. 2). How humiliating, isn’t it? How long will this situation continue? It is unbearable. Many of us would say that something about such a situation reminds us of our own experience, or that we can relate to it now.
2. clinging to God’s mercy
What did David do? In the depths of his despair, David still called out to God. In the midst of his despair, he still cries out to God. O Lord my God, make my eyes bright. Brighten my eyes” (v. 3), lest I be overcome by the enemy and die first, and the enemy be victorious. I am taking the troubles and cries of my heart directly to God. He is simply leaning on God’s mercy. If you read between the lines, that is what he means. In other words, the phrase “perseverance wins out,” and that is what is required of us to keep on persevering with God. God is good, He does not reject good things, He continues to trust in His faithfulness, and it is of utmost importance that the believer be righteous in that regard. And it will take a great deal of time to acquire such a disposition and such perseverance. There are days of faith practice that you have to devote yourself to alone without anyone’s knowledge. We must not forget this and become a spoiled believer who simply says, “God doesn’t listen to me.
Verse 6 says that God is “good to me. The English translation (NEB) of the Bible translates it as “He has heard all my requests. In other words, it says that God not only hears my requests, but responds far beyond them. The Living Bible translation says, “I have been blessed beyond measure, and I sing to the Lord with all my heart. If that is so, we may conclude that we are compelled to sing to the Lord.
Therefore, even if the thought “How long?” comes to our mind in prayer, we should accept this trial as a time of training by God, trust Him, and persist in prayer for a little while longer now. God is the one who gives us the ultimate solution. If we have that mental attitude, we can have peace and joy even in the midst of a totally overwhelming situation. Maturity of faith gives us blessings that cannot be understood in the ordinary sense. God is the God of miracles, the God of creation. Let us call upon the living God, the One who creates something out of nothing. I pray that today will be another good day.
