1．ラケルとの出会い（29:1-14）
ベエル･シェバからハランまで約800キロメートル。長旅の末、ついにヤコブは、伯父ラバンの住む町の近くにたどり着きました。ヤコブは、町の側にあった井戸で、叔父のラバンの娘、ラケルと出会うのです。なんという偶然！言いたくなるところですが、それは、「神の祝福のことば」に基づいた神のご計画でした。ラバンの家に迎えられるとヤコブは、「事の次第のすべてを話した」と言います。相手がどんな人であるかもよくわからない状況で、ヤコブは自分のすべてを吐き出すのです。もはや、だまし討ちの人生など、まっぴらだ、神と共に生きるならば正直になりたいと思ったのかもしれません。
しかし、人間社会そんなに甘くはないものでしょう。自分が誠実に生きようと心を決めたからと言って、他人からも誠実さが返ってくるとは限らないものです。自分は、新しい人生を生きるのだと思ったとしても、他人は、その思いを平気で踏みにじって来ることだってあるのです。人間は皆自分と同じように考えて行動してくれるわけではありません。ラバンは、ヤコブの誠実さを評価しましたが（14節）、これを逆に利用する人でした。初めて家を離れ、右も左もわからない未熟者のヤコブ、彼は、信頼して駆け込んだその場所で、新たな試練に巻き込まれていくのです。しかし、神は正しいお方であり「神の祝福のことば」に偽りはありません。やがて、ヤコブは、すべての良きものは上から来ることを悟るようになります。
2．ラケルとの結婚（29:15-35）
当時花嫁の父は、「花嫁料」を受け取るのが普通でした。それは、花嫁を財産や奴隷のように売り買いする考え方があったというのではありません。むしろ貴重な家族の構成員を失うことに対する代価で、その額は通常銀50シェケルでした。ヤコブのように無一文の場合は、労働力で返すこともありました。それでヤコブはラバンの下で7年働いたわけです。
しかしヤコブは、騙されました。この土地には、長女を先に嫁がせるルールがあるとして、ラケルではなく、長女のレアを与えられ、ラケルのためにさらに7年働かなくてはならなかったのです。世間知らずのヤコブは、またもや不条理な人生を強いられるのです。彼の誠実な労働力の提供を、ラバンは自己利益のために貪り始めたのです。そして、ヤコブは批判のことばを口にしても（25節）、それを引っ込めて従わざるを得ない弱者となってしまったのです（27節）。こんな人生を生きる羽目になるとは、とヤコブは臍を噛む思いであったでしょう。もっと知恵があれば、と思うのは、こんな時です。知恵があれば、こんな人生は歩まなかっただろう、とヤコブも思ったかもしれません。ただヤコブのラケルに対する愛は、妨げられることはありませんでした（30節）。
信頼していたおじが敵となり、愛する者との間に、愛がありながらも、複雑な関係となってしまう。人生は実に複雑です。そして、神はこれらのすべてを見ておられるお方です。人を利用する者の罠にかかり、その足かせを外すことのできない状況に置かれたとしても、「神の祝福のことば」を思い起こし、静かに成り行きを見守っていくことです。そしてたとえそれによって損失を受けるようなことがあっても、豊かに償う力のある神を信頼することです。慌てず、争わず、祈ることです。神は、失った時も、機会も、ものも、すべてを何等かの形で、取り戻してくださるお方です。
そのような意味で、著者は、夫に愛されないレアが、神の愛のまなざしの中に置かれていたことを書き加えているようです。レアもヤコブ同様に、不条理な人生に巻き込まれた人でした。ヤコブはラケルを愛しました。レアを妻として愛さねばならないとはわかっていても、レアに対する愛情は湧かなかったのです。しかしレアは、真っ先に子を産む女の祝福に与り、やがてイスラエル12部族の中では、祭司となるレビ族と王を排出するユダ族の母となりました。人間ヤコブは、目に好ましいラケルを選びましたが、神は、見た目も劣り、嫌われた女レアを選ばれたのです。
全く望みのない理不尽な人生に置かれた人々にとって、この神の性質を知ることは福音です。神は、単純に強い者、知恵ある者の味方ではないのです。それぞれの人生をしっかり見ておられ、窮地に陥ったヤコブ、そして悪意に振り回されたレアをも見過ごしにはされないのです。すべての人の人生に関心を持ち、その修復しようのない人生に、意義をもたらすお方だと言えるでしょう。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福があるように。チャンネルの登録、メンバーの登録よろしくお願いいたします。では、また明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Genesis 29: Meeting with Rachel, Marriage
- Meeting with Rachel (29:1-14)
From Beer-sheba to Haran, about 800 km. After a long journey, Jacob finally arrived near the town where his uncle Laban lived. At a well near the town, Jacob met his uncle Laban’s daughter, Rachel. What a coincidence! One would like to say, but it was God’s plan based on “God’s words of blessing.” When Jacob was welcomed into Laban’s house, he said, “I told him everything that had happened.” In a situation where he didn’t even know what kind of person the other person was, Jacob spilled out everything about himself. He no longer wanted a life of sneak attacks, and perhaps he wanted to be honest if he was to live with God.
However, human society is not so easy. Just because you decide to live honestly, it doesn’t mean that others will return your honesty to you. Even if you think you are living a new life, others may trample on your feelings without a second thought. Not everyone thinks and acts the same way as you do. Laban appreciated Jacob’s sincerity (verse 14), but he took advantage of this. Jacob, an inexperienced man who had left his home for the first time and did not know his right or left, was caught up in new trials in the place where he ran with confidence. However, God is righteous and “God’s words of blessing” are true. Soon, Jacob comes to realize that all good things come from above. - Marriage with Rachel (29:15-35)
At that time, it was common for the father of the bride to receive a “bride price.” This was not to say that there was a concept of buying and selling the bride like property or a slave. Rather, it was a price for losing a valuable family member, and the amount was usually 50 shekels of silver. If a man was penniless like Jacob, he could repay the price with labor. That is why Jacob worked for Laban for seven years. But Jacob was deceived. Because the rule in this land was that the eldest daughter should be married first, he was given Leah, not Rachel, and had to work for Rachel for another seven years. The naive Jacob was forced to live an absurd life again. Laban began to covet his honest labor for his own profit. And even though Jacob spoke words of criticism (verse 25), he was forced to withdraw them and submit (verse 27). Jacob must have regretted having to live such a life. It was at times like these that he wished he had more wisdom. Jacob may have thought that if he had wisdom, he would not have lived such a life. But Jacob’s love for Rachel was not hindered (verse 30).
A trusted uncle became an enemy, and a loving but complicated relationship developed between him and his loved one. Life is very complicated. And God sees it all. Even if you are caught in the trap of someone who exploits you and are in a situation where you cannot break free from the shackles, remember “God’s words of blessing” and quietly watch how things go. And even if you suffer losses as a result, trust in God who has the power to abundantly compensate. Don’t panic, don’t fight, pray. God is the one who will restore all lost time, opportunities, and things in some form.
In that sense, the author seems to have added that Leah, who was not loved by her husband, was under God’s loving gaze. Like Jacob, Leah was a person who was caught up in an absurd life. Jacob loved Rachel. Although he knew that he had to love Leah as his wife, he did not feel any love for her. However, Leah was the first to receive the blessing of a woman who would give birth, and eventually became the mother of the tribe of Levi, who would become priests, and the tribe of Judah, who would produce kings, among the 12 tribes of Israel. The human Jacob chose Rachel, who was pleasing to the eye, but God chose Leah, a woman of inferior appearance and hated by him.
For people who are in a hopeless and unreasonable life, knowing this nature of God is good news. God is not simply on the side of the strong and wise. He looks closely at each life and will not overlook Jacob, who was in a difficult situation, or Leah, who was manipulated by malice. It can be said that God is interested in the lives of all people and brings meaning to those lives that cannot be repaired. God’s word is true. May God bless you.
