1．神が中心（3:1-9）
コリントの教会について、パウロがこの手紙で最初に取り上げた問題は、分裂でした（1:10）。コリントの教会は、神の指導下に、皆が一致協力し助け合う体制になってはおらず、ある意味で世の中の組織と同じように、有力な指導者に組し、互いにマウントを取り合うような集団になっていたのです。それは実に残念な状況でした。しかし、笑えたものではありません。今日も同じような状況があるかもしれません。
パウロは、はっきりと言います。キリスト者も色々だ、と。「肉に属する人」もいれば「御霊に属する人」もいる。あなた方は未だに「肉に属する人、キリストにある幼子」ではないか。つまりキリスト者とは言うが、中身は俗人だ。神様などどうでもよい人で、人をちやほやし、自分もちやほやされるのが好きで、自分たちを中心としたグループを作り、教会を神の教会にしようとするのではなく、自分たちに都合のよい場所にしようとする人たちだ、と。
パウロは、コリント教会の現実を憂いながら、はっきりと語ります。コリントの教会を開拓したのはこの私だ。それは事実だ。その後は、アポロという伝道者がやって来てこれを発展させた。しかしパウロもアポロも神の手足になって働いたしもべに過ぎない。教会を興し、ここまで大きく成長させてくれたのは神だ。神によって教会の働きは成り立っている、私たちではない、私たちは神のもとに遜って、力を合わせて、神の働きを進めるだけだ、勘違いしてはいけないぞ、と言うわけです。
2．働きをどう進めるかに注意せよ（3:10-23）
10節以降、パウロは自分の働きについて説明します。「建築士」ということばは、「アルキテクトーン」。英語のアーキテクトの語源です。「長」を意味する「アルキ」、木工大工を意味する「テクトーン」の合成語です。つまり大工の棟梁と言うわけです。言わんとすることは、パウロは、全体を視野にいれながら、しっかり要所を抑えて、よい仕事をした、ということでしょう。つまり、パウロは、コリント教会の基礎については、イエス・キリストをしっかり据えた、これは間違いがないと言います。つまり神の愛に生きるのが教会です。それを、争いの場にしてしまうなど、もってのほかです。今あなたがたは、どのように教会を発展させようとしているのか注意せよ、と言います。コリントの教会の運営に責任を持っている人への警告です。
ただその働きを評価するのは神であり、またその働きに対する裁きを下すのも神だ、と言います。神が、良しと認める働きをした人の働きは残されて、その働き人も評価されます。しかし、神のみこころとは異なる働きを進める人の働きは跡形もなく消えていきます。ただ、消えていくような働きをした人であっても、キリストのために努力した人は、命からがら、助け出されることはあるでしょうが、神の宮を壊すような働きをした人は、神に滅ぼされる、と言います。
人間の心には、争い易い心が潜んでいます。そして、教会を争いの場にしてしまうような人は、その責任を問われずには済まされません。教会は神のものなので、神の宮を荒らすような人は、神がこれを許されないのです。私は、30年以上の牧会経験の中から、教会内での衝突を様々に経験してきました。そして最終的に責任をもって教会を建て上げる人たちというのは、「御霊の人」つまり謙虚に、神の教会に対する思いを大事にしながら、神の愛に生きる人々だと感じています。やがて神の裁きの前に立った時に、働きの成果に関わらず、神が喜んでくださる働きをしたいものです。
1 Corinthians 3: Let’s Stop Fighting in the Church
1. God is the center (3:1-9)
The first problem Paul addresses in this letter concerning the church in Corinth is division (1:10). The church in Corinth was not under God’s leadership, but rather, like any other organization in the world, it was a group of people who allied themselves with powerful leaders and fought each other. It was a very unfortunate situation. But it was no laughing matter. We could have a similar situation today.
Paul makes it clear. Christians come in all shapes and sizes. Some are “of the flesh” and some are “of the Spirit. You are still “partakers of the flesh, children in Christ. In other words, you say you are Christians, but inside you are laymen. You are people who don’t care about God, who like to pamper others and be pampered, who form groups around themselves and try to make the church a place that suits them instead of making it the church of God.
Paul speaks clearly and with concern about the reality of the Corinthian church. I am the one who pioneered the church in Corinth. That is a fact. After that, an evangelist named Apollos came and developed it. But both Paul and Apollos were only servants who worked as the hands and feet of God. It was God who established the Church and made it grow so large. The work of the Church is established by God, not by us, and we are only to further the work of God by being obedient to Him and cooperating with Him.
2. Be Careful How You Advance the Work (3:10-23)
Beginning in verse 10, Paul describes his ministry. The word “architect” is “architect”. It is the root of the English word “architect. It is a compound word from “archi,” meaning “chief,” and “tectone,” meaning “carpenter. In other words, he is a master carpenter. What Paul is trying to say is that he did a good job, keeping the whole picture in mind and keeping the main points in check. In other words, Paul is saying that the foundation of the Corinthian church is Jesus Christ, and there is no mistake about it. In other words, the church is to live in the love of God. It is not to be a place of strife. He says, “Be careful how you develop the church. This is a warning to those who are responsible for the operation of the church in Corinth.
He says that it is God who evaluates the work, and it is God who judges the work. The work of those whose work God judges good will be preserved, and the worker will be judged. But the work of those who promote work that is not God’s will will disappear without a trace. But even those whose work disappears, those who strive for the sake of Christ, can be saved, even at the cost of their own lives.
There is a spirit of strife lurking in the human heart. And those who make the church a place of conflict will not go unpunished. The church belongs to God, and God will not allow anyone to destroy His temple. In my more than 30 years of pastoral experience, I have seen various conflicts within the church. And I feel that those who are ultimately responsible for building up the church are “people of the Spirit,” that is, people who live humbly in God’s love while cherishing God’s desire for the church. When we finally stand before God’s judgment, we want to do work that will please God, regardless of the results of our work.
