１．背景

　1節、「力ある者よ」は、欄外注では、「いくつかの古代訳による」とあります。ヘブル語本文で使われている単語はエレム、つまり「黙する」となっていますから、本来は黙する者よ、と訳すべきところなのでしょうが、意味が通りにくいので、いくつかの古代役を参照して、力ある者よ、と訳したというのでしょう。確かに、ヘブル語のエレムは、唇を堅く閉ざすことを意味していて、詩篇31:18では、「偽りのくちびるを封じてください」と訳されています。あるいは、ダニエル書では、「私はうつむいていて、何も言えなかった」（10:15）という形で使われています。「封じる」「何も言えない」「黙っている」と訳するこの単語、ここでは、裁可すべき権力を持ちながらも、語るべきことを語ろうとしない、無言で暴力的に権力を振るう人物を想定しているのではないでしょうか。確かに残念なことですが、権力を振るうのみ、あるいは、権力に胡坐をかくのみで、問答無用と言わんばかりの権力者はいるものです。結果そのような人物のもとにある社会の取引は不正だらけで、暴虐を野放しにするというわけです（2節）。

　また仮にそのような人が口を開いても、生まれつきの大ウソつきで、まるで、耳の聞こえないコブラのように、つまり蛇使いにコントロールされることもないありのままの本能そのままで生きているようなものだと言います。

いったいダビデは、人生のいつどこで、このような状況に遭遇したのでしょう。具体的にその時期を特定することはできませんが、ここでの非難は個人的な問題ではなく、社会的な影響を与えている人に対する非難です。

となればサウル王の迫害下にあり、正しいことがわかりながらも、ダビデのためにとりなすのでもなく、黙して語らず、冷やかに事の成り行きを見つめている権力者たち、あるいは嘘偽りを並べて、火の粉がかからないように権力維持に汲々としている者たちを言っているのかもしれません。凍り付くような状況です。まさに上に立ってはいけない者が上に立つ状況、人の世において、そのようなことはしばしば起こりうることなのです。ダビデの経験は過去の特殊な経験ではなく、歴史的に身近な経験であり、そこに無念さを感じている人はいつの時代にもいることでしょう。

2．祈り

　けれどもキリスト者は、そこで腐り果てるのではなく、正しき神がおられることを信じ、ダビデのように祈るべきなのです。おそらくここには、七つのイメージでもって、そのような悪者たちが除かれるように願い求めています。第一に「口の中で歯が折れた人」「牙が打ち砕かれた若獅子」（6節）「地に吸い込まれてどことなく消え去る水」（7節）「折れた矢（新改訳第三版）」（7節）「溶けて消えて行くなめくじ」（8節）「日の目を見ない、死産の子」（8節）、そして9節「おまえたちの釜が、茨の火を感じる前に、神は、それが緑のままでも、燃えていても、等しく吹き払われる」つまり、到底権力者にふさわしくない者が権力の座に着き、何かを計画し、いよいよ準備が整い物事が動き始めるような時に、神が、一息にそれを吹き飛ばされる、ということでしょう。もっと直接的なイメージで言えば、調理なべに具材が盛られて、火を点火して煮込もうとした矢先に、火が吹き消された状況です。水につかった生肉や野菜などを見ながら、これは食べられないわ、という状況です。面白いたとえです。

ダビデの激しい怒り、やるせない感情に共感し、このように祈ってみるのもよし、と思う人も多いでしょう。正義は曲げられ、不正と暴虐が蔓延る最中にある。それは、自分の力ではどうにもならない落とし穴に閉じ込められている状況で、下手に抗おうものなら、耳をふさぎ、耳の聞こえないコブラの毒牙にかかってしまうのです。こんな時には、ただひたすら神に向かって、ダビデのことばを借りて叫ぶほかはありません。

3．賛歌

祈って祈って祈る！神は、正しいことをなさるお方です（11節）。たとえ、袋小路の中に追い詰められようとも、いつまでもその状況は続きません。ふさわしくない権力者がいつまでも権力の座にいることも許されません。神は天地創造の神であり、全能の神である、と同時に、正義の神です。不正に踏みにじられ、やるせない状況に置かれている時には、腐ることなく、神にその状況を訴えることにしましょう。そして、ダビデのように七つのイメージで祈り、確かに、さばく神が地におられることを実感させていただくことにしましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Prayer 58: Prayer for Unhappy Times

1. background

　Verse 1, “O Mighty One,” is rendered “according to some ancient translations” in the notes outside the column. The word used in the Hebrew text is elem, which means “to be silent,” so it should be translated “O you who are silent,” but since the meaning is difficult to understand, the translator has referred to several ancient translations and translated it as “O you who are powerful. Indeed, the Hebrew word elem means to shut one’s lips tightly, and in Psalm 31:18 it is translated “seal up the lips of the false.” Or, in Daniel, it is used in the form, “I was downcast and could say nothing” (10:15). This word, which translates “sealed up,” “said nothing,” or “kept silent,” may be envisioned here as someone who has power to judge, but refuses to say what needs to be said, who wields power in a silent and violent manner. It is indeed unfortunate, but there are people in power who only wield power or sit on their laurels and do not answer questions. As a result, the transactions of society under such a person are full of injustice, allowing tyranny to run rampant (v.2).

　And even if such a person opens his mouth, he is a born liar, like a deaf cobra, living by instinct, uncontrolled by the snake charmer.

Where and when in David’s life did he encounter this kind of situation? I can’t pinpoint a specific time, but the accusation here is not a personal one, but one against someone who is giving a social impact.

If this is the case, it may be referring to those in power under King Saul’s persecution who know what is right but do not intercede on David’s behalf, who remain silent and do not speak, who watch the events unfold with a cool head, or those who lie and lie and are busy trying to stay in power so that they do not catch on fire. It’s a chilling situation. It is a chilling situation. It is precisely the kind of situation in which those who should not be on top are on top, and in the world of men, such things can often happen. David’s experience is not a unique experience of the past, but a familiar one historically, and there will always be those who feel regret over it.

2. prayer

　But Christians should not be left there to rot, but should pray like David, believing that there is a righteous God. Perhaps there are seven images here in which we ask for the removal of such evildoers. First, “a man with a broken tooth in his mouth,” “a young lion with its tusks smashed” (v. 6), “water that is sucked into the earth and somehow disappears” (v. 7), “a broken arrow (New Revised Version, 3rd ed.)” (v. 7), “a lickspittle that melts and disappears” (v. 8), “a stillborn child that will not see the light of day” (v. 8), and verse 9, “Your potsherd, a thorn fire Before you feel it, God blows it out equally, whether it remains green or burns.” That would mean that when someone who is hardly fit for power comes to power, plans something, and things are finally ready to go into motion, God blows it out with a single breath. A more direct image of this would be the situation where the ingredients are placed in a cooking pot, the fire is lit, and just as it is about to simmer, the fire is extinguished. The situation is that you are looking at the raw meat and vegetables in the water and thinking, “I can’t eat this. It is an interesting parable.

Many people may sympathize with David’s intense anger and unwillingness to do so, and may think it is good to pray in this way. Justice has been perverted, and injustice and tyranny are in the midst of spreading. It is a situation where we are trapped in a pit that is beyond our control, and if we try to resist poorly, we will fall prey to the venom of a deaf and dumb cobra. In such a situation, there is no other way but to cry out to God, borrowing from David’s words.

3. hymn

Pray, pray, pray! God is the One who does what is right (v. 11). Even if we are trapped in an impasse, it will not last forever. Unworthy authorities are not allowed to remain in power forever. God is the God of creation, the God Almighty, and the God of justice. When we are trampled by injustice and placed in an untenable situation, let us not be corrupt but appeal to God about the situation. Let us pray with the seven images like David, and let us realize that there is indeed a God on earth who judges. I pray that today will be another good day.
