18章 神による勝利
1．契約に基づくダビデの祝福
18章から20章は、ダビデがイスラエル王国を建て上げていく概要が描かれています。それは、主として軍事的勝利を重ね、領土を拡大していく記録であり、2サムエル記8章～23章の中に散在している記録をまとめています。となると、ダビデの軍事的な成功を数え上げ、ダビデに不名誉なものは削除したとも思われるのですが、実はそうではありません。逆にそれは、敵対したサウル家に対してダビデが寛容の姿勢を見せたことや、ダビデの優れた詩篇などの記事を省いていますし、サムエル記ではダビデの業績とされた勝利を、ダビデの将軍の功績としています（18:12-13）。著者は、ダビデが英雄視されることを注意深く避けているのです。
そしてむしろ著者が読者に注目させようとしているのは、18章で繰り返されることば「主は、ダビデの行く先々で、彼に勝利を与えられた」です。彼が戦争に勝ち進んだ秘密は、彼自身の能力によるものではなく、神の助けであり、神との契約にある、と言いたいのです。それは、捕囚から帰って来て、これから町を建て直そうとしている最初の読者に勇気と力を与えたことに間違いありません。山となしている瓦礫を片付け、新しく城壁や、町や、神殿を築こうとする彼らにとって、それは千里の道の一歩を踏み出すようなものでした。途方に暮れるような思いでいた彼らに、大丈夫、神の契約があるのだから、これから必ず良き方向に向かう、と神への信頼を引き出し、励ますものであったわけです。
ダビデは祈っています。「今、主よ。あなたが、このしもべとその家についてお語りになったことばを、とこしえまでも真実なものとし、お語りになったとおりに行ってください。」（17:23）。彼らはまさにダビデのこの祈りを自分の祈りとすることを教えられていくのです。たとえどのように不可能なことに直面しようとも、契約に基づいた祈りに応え、祝される神がおられる、そのような考え方を大事にしていきたいものです。
2．勝利をもたらすのは神
さてダビデは周囲の四つの敵を打ち負かしています。ツォバの王ハダデエゼルは、戦車一千、騎兵七千、歩兵二万を備えていました。当時のイスラエルの戦力が、果たしてこれに対抗しうる軍備を持っていたのか疑わしいところです。アラムの軍隊は二万二千、エドムは一万八千、ダビデは、これらの軍隊に勝利しました。既に述べたように、これは、ダビデ強し！凄い！というのではありません。むしろ、神の契約に対する忠実さは素晴らしい！と言いたいわけです。神が契約に基づいてダビデに勝利をもたらしている。ダビデは詩篇の中で、「神によって、私たちは力ある働きをします。神こそ、私たちの敵を踏みつけられる方です」（詩編60:12）と歌っています。大切なのは、神との契約であり、神の契約に対する忠実さです。契約に基づいて彼らの町も再建されるということです。
3．ダビデの内閣
15節以降は、著者はダビデの内閣について記します。その中に「エホヤダの子ベナヤ」と興味深い名前が出てきます（17節）。ベナヤは祭司の子として生まれました（1歴代誌27:5）。しかし、彼は兵士となり、モアブの二人の英雄やイスラエルには周知の「堂々としたエジプト人」、さらには雄獅子を打ち殺したエピソードがあります（2サムエル記23:20-23）。そしてソロモンの時代に、軍団長として抜擢されています（1列王記2:35）。ベナヤは、祭司の子ですから、本来は、世襲制の制度の中で、父の七光にあやかって生きることもできたでしょう。しかし彼は敢えて、いのちをかけて戦う危険な人生へと飛び込んでいったのです。まだまだ戦争の結末がどうなるのか予測もつかない状況の中で。神は、そのような彼に勝利を与えられました。捕囚帰還後、長旅で食料も尽き、町を再建する難題に取り組まねばならなかった読者も、敢えて困難な人生を選び取った自分たちの未来について大いに励まされるエピソードであったと言うべきでしょう。神の約束に立つ信仰をしっかり固めたいところです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 18 God’s Victory
- Covenant Blessing of David
Chapters 18 to 20 outline how David builds the kingdom of Israel. It is mainly a record of repeated military victories and expansion of territory, and it summarizes the scattered records in 2 Samuel 8-23. In that case, one might think that David’s military successes were enumerated and those that dishonored him were deleted, but that is not the case. On the contrary, it omits David’s tolerant attitude toward the hostile Saul family, David’s excellent psalms, and other articles. 18:12-13). The author is careful to avoid making David a hero.
And rather, the author tries to draw the reader’s attention to the recurring phrase in chapter 18, “Wherever David went, the Lord gave him victory.” I would like to say that the secret of his winning the war was not in his own ability, but in God’s help and in his covenant with God. There is no doubt that it gave courage and strength to the first readers who returned from captivity and are now trying to rebuild the city. It was like walking a thousand miles for them to clear the mountains of rubble and build new walls, cities, and temples. They were at a loss for what to do, but they were encouraged to believe in God, saying, “It’s okay, because there is a covenant with God.”
David prays. “Now, O Lord, let the word you have spoken about this servant and his house be true forever, and do as you have spoken” (17:23). . They are taught to make this prayer of David their own. I would like to cherish the idea that there is a God who answers and blesses prayers based on the covenant, no matter how impossible things may be.
- God Brings Victory
Now David has defeated four enemies around him. Hadadezer, king of Zobah, had 1,000 chariots, 7,000 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. It is doubtful whether the military strength of Israel at that time had the armaments that could counter this. The army of Aram was 22,000, the army of Edom was 18,000, and David overcame them. As already mentioned, this is David the Strong! amazing! That’s not what I mean. Rather, faithfulness to God’s covenant is great! I want to say. God gives David victory by covenant. In his Psalm, David sings, “By God we work mightily; God is the one who tramples down our enemies” (Psalm 60:12). What counts is the covenant with God and fidelity to that covenant. According to the contract, their town will also be rebuilt.
- David’s Cabinet
From verse 15 onwards, the author writes about David’s cabinet. Among them is an interesting name, “Benaiah son of Jehoiada” (verse 17). Benaiah was born to a priest (1 Chronicles 27:5). However, he became a soldier, and there are episodes where he slayed two heroes of Moab, a well-known “imposing Egyptian” in Israel, and even a lion (2 Samuel 23:20-23). And in Solomon’s time, he was selected as a legion commander (1 Kings 2:35). Since Benaiah was the son of a priest, he could have been able to live under the hereditary system, under the influence of his father. But he ventured into the dangerous life of his service. In a situation where it is still not possible to predict how the war will end. God gave him victory like that. After returning from captivity, the readers, who ran out of food during the long journey and had to deal with the difficult task of rebuilding the town, should say that it was a very encouraging episode about their future, who dared to choose a difficult life.
