17章 フシャイとアヒトフェル
1．二人の助言者
アブサロムは、父ダビデを葬り去ろうとしていました。もはや、自分が権力に就く時が来た、そのような思いであったのでしょう。彼の心に父に対する愛は一欠けらもなく、もはや単なる敵の一人でした。何とも血のつながりがありながらも悲しい親子関係です。しかし、これもまた人間社会の一つの現実なのでしょう。ともあれ、アブサロムは、父の息の根を止めるために、家臣のアヒトフェルに助言を求めました。彼としては、百戦錬磨の父を完全に葬り去るために、慎重に慎重を期したつもりなのでしょう。アヒトフェルの助言は、簡単でした。逃げ出したダビデが、反撃の体制を整える前に一網打尽にすることでした。ところが、アブサロムは、もう一人の家臣フシャイの助言に関心を持つのです。
フシャイの助言は、別の意味で巧みでした。つまりアヒトフェルの賢明な助言を打ち壊し、ダビデに反撃の体制を整える時間を与えようとするものだったのです。フシャイは、ダビデの過去の業績を並べ立て用心深くあるように促しました。軽微な損害も、誇張されて、戦意を失わせる効果があるものです。アブサロムの不安な心を、彼は読み取っていました。また「全イスラエルを、ダンからベエル・シェバに至るまで、海辺の砂のように数多くあなたのところに集めて、あなた自身が戦いに出られることです」「露が地面に降りるように彼を襲うのです」と、勇猛果敢な征服者のイメージを掲げ、アブサロムのプライドをくすぐりました。判断力の弱いアブサロムがアヒトフェルよりも、フシャイの気持ちを捕らえた助言を好んだのは、言うまでもありません。
サムエル記の著者は、アヒトフェルの戦略が、フシャイのそれよりも優れていたことを認めている。実際、フシャイも、それは認めていたからこそ、急いでダビデにこの状況を伝え、その日のうちにヨルダン川を渡らせ、逃れさせています。アヒトフェルは、自分の助言が採用されなかったのを見て、首をくくって死んだと言いますが、これは単に、自分が軽んじられたことを苦にしたというのではなくて、自分の助言が採用されなかった結果、何が起こるかを悟ったためと言えます。つまりダビデがヨルダン川を渡り反撃の体制を整える時間を持ったということは、アブサロムが王になることはなく、自分も謀反者として死刑に処せられることを知ったのです。彼は実に有能な政治家でしたが、物事は有能さだけで動いていくわけではありません。神を計算に入れない人生は、どこか危ういものです。
2．はかりごとを討ち壊す神
アブサロムは、またしても、フシャイに騙されました。しかし、アブサロムに彼の考えを見抜く知恵はありませんでした。アブサロムがイスラエルのすべての人々を招集している間に、ダビデは、反撃の体制を整えるための時間を稼ぐことが出来ました。事実、荒野で飢え疲れている彼らのもとに、ショビ、マキル、バルジライの三人の資産家から、思いやりのある援助が届けられました。こうして形勢が逆転していくのです。
かつて神は、恐れるヤコブに、マハナイムで神の遣いたちを遣わされました。その同じ場所で、今度はダビデに具体的な励ましを与えています。しかし、ヤコブにしても、ダビデにしても、なぜ神はこれほどよくしてくださるのでしょう。ダビデは神の御心を損なっただけではなく、何の罪のない人を殺めています。本来ならば彼は神に見捨てられてもよい存在です。しかしそうしないところが神の憐れみの深さなのでしょう。使徒パウロは、行いによらず神の恵みを受けた人の例としてダビデをあげています（ローマ4:6）。神は物事を正しくさばかれるお方であるが、罪を赦してくださるお方です。そして、恵み深いお方なので、赦した人をさらに立て直すお方なのです。
しばしば人は、自分の生まれや育ちを考えて、自分の人生など大した結果にはならないと、人生を諦めていることがあるものではないでしょうか。あるいは、こんな失敗をして、自分には何の将来も描けないと思うこともあるかもしれない。しかし、アヒトフェルの優れた策略を無にして、罪人のダビデを助けてくださった、あわれみの神は今なお生きているというのが、聖書の語るところです。あなたも、この神に望みを置いて人生を諦めないことでしょう。使徒パウロもローマ人の手紙で語るように、弱く、不敬虔であり、神に敵対している者であれ、望みはあるのです。神は愛であり憐れみ深いからです。では今日もよき1日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 17 Hushai and Ahithophel
1．Two advisers
Absalom was trying to ostracize his father, David. Perhaps he had such a feeling that it was time for him to take power. There was no love for his father in his heart, and he was no longer just one of his enemies. It is a sad parent-child relationship even though there is a blood connection. However, this is also a reality of human society. In any case, Absalom sought advice from his vassal Ahithophel to hold his father’s breath. He would have been very careful in order to completely ostracize his father, who was a warrior. Ahithophel’s advice was simple. David, who escaped, decided to exhaust the net before preparing for a counterattack. However, Absalom is interested in the advice of another vassal, Hushai.
Hushai’s advice was skillful in another sense. In other words, it was trying to break Ahithophel’s wise counsel and give David time to prepare for a counterattack. Hushai urged David to be cautious in arranging his past achievements. Even minor damage can be exaggerated and demoralizing. He was reading Absalom’s uneasy heart. “Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba^ as numerous as the sand on the seashore- be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle.” “we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground.” With the image of a fearless conqueror, tickling Absalom’s pride. It goes without saying that Absalom, who has poor judgment, preferred Hushai’s emotional advice to Ahithophel.
The authors of Samuel admit that Ahithophel’s strategy was superior to that of Hushai. In fact, because Hushai admitted it, he hurriedly informed David of the situation, crossing the Jordan River that day and letting him escape. Ahithophel died after seeing his advice not being adopted, but this wasn’t just a pain for himself to be disrespected. It can be said that he realized what would happen as a result of the advice being not adopted. In other words, the fact that David had time to cross the Jordan River and prepare for a counterattack meant that Absalom would never become king, and he knew that he would also be sentenced to death as a rebel. He was a very capable politician, but things don’t just move with competence. A life that doesn’t take God into account is something dangerous.
2．God who destroys the scale
Absalom was once again deceived by Hushai. But Absalom had no wisdom to see through his thoughts. While Absalom was convening all the people of Israel, David was able to gain time to prepare for a counterattack. In fact, they were hungry and tired in the wilderness, and three wealthy men, Shobi, Makil, and Baljirai, provided compassionate help. In this way, the situation is reversed.
God once sent God’s messenger to Jacob, who was afraid, at Mahanaim. In that same place, this time giving David concrete encouragement. But why is God so good, whether Jacob or David? Not only did David hurt the will of God, he was killing innocent people. Originally he could be abandoned by God. However, it is the depth of God’s mercy that does not do so. The apostle Paul gives David as an example of a man who has received God’s grace regardless of his deeds (Romans 4: 6). God is the one who judges things right, but he is the one who forgives sin. And because he is a gracious person, he is the one who further rebuilds the forgiven person.
Often, a person may give up on his life, thinking of his birth and upbringing, if his life is not a big deal. Or he might make such a mistake and think he can’t draw any future. However, the Bible says that the god of mercy, who helped the sinner David by eliminating Ahithophel’s excellent tactics, is still alive. You too will not give up your life with hope in this God. As the apostle Paul says in the Romans, there is hope, even if he is weak, ungodly, and hostile to God. Because God is love and mercy. I pray that today will be a good day.
