申命記6章では、イスラエルの信仰の中心となる「シェマー（聞きなさい、イスラエルよ）」が語られています。これは神を信じること、神を愛することの大切さを伝えるものです。
ユダヤ人の家庭やホテルでは、部屋の入口に「メズーザー」と呼ばれる小さな細長い箱が取り付けられています。この中には、申命記6:4-9、11:13-21が書かれた小さな羊皮紙が入っています。敬虔なユダヤ人は、出入りの度にこれに触れて口づけし祈ると言います。
1．み教えを守る（6:1-10）
4節からは、一般に「シェマー」と呼ばれ、敬虔なユダヤ人が、毎日繰り返し口にする信仰告白です。そこではまず「主はただおひとりである」と宣言されています。これはイスラエルの信仰が唯一の神を信じるものであることを教えています。
次に、「心をつくし、いのちを尽くし、力を尽くして、あなたの神、主を愛しなさい」（5節）とあります。これは、ただ神を単に信じるだけでなく、心から愛することが大切であることを教えています。イエスもこの教えを最も大切な戒めとして語りました（マタイ22:37）。信仰の中心には愛があるということです。
神は人格的な存在で、私たちとの関わりの中で、悲しみもし、喜びもするお方です。信仰は、この人格的な神との関係の中で育まれるものです。信仰は何か利用することではなく、神と共に生きる喜びを持つことなのです。
たとえば礼拝は、「義務」ではなく「神への感謝」として献げます。献金も、「支払う」のではなく「神への献げもの」とします。聖書を読むことも「学ぶ」のではなく「神のことばを愛し、応答する」ものとしていくのです（6節）。そしてこのような生き方が大切だと信じるので、次の世代にも伝えたいと考えます（7節）。神と共に生きることの素晴らしさを知ると、人生が豊かになるのです。
2．み教えを忘れない（6:10-19）
申命記6章は、神の恵みを忘れないことが大切だと教えられています。「あなたが建てたのではない家」（10節）、「あなたが満たしたのではない井戸」（11節）という言葉は、神の恵みが、人間の努力を超えて与えられるものだということを示しています。
信仰とは、過去の記憶を呼び覚ますことだけではありません。神がしてくださったことを思い出し、それを今の生活に活かしていくことが重要です。
たとえば、神に助けられた経験を思い起こし、感謝の気持ちを持って生きる。試練の中で神の導きを感じた経験を思い起こし、信仰を強く持ち、前に進むといったようにです。神の恵みを忘れず、そのことを大切にすることが、信仰を深めることになるのです。
（3）契約の信仰を伝える（6:20-25）
6章の最後の部分では、子どもに信仰を伝えることの重要性が語られています。
日本のようにキリスト教が少数派の社会では、信仰を持つ親の子どもが「なぜ自分の家庭は宗教に熱心なのか」と疑問を持つことがあるものです。申命記6:20-21は、このような疑問に答えるための原則を示しています。「私たちはエジプトでファラオの奴隷であったが、主が力強い御手をもって、私たちをエジプトから導き出された」（21節）。
つまり、なぜ自分は神を信じたのか、神が自分にどんなことをしてくれたのか、今ある生活は神のおかげであることを、子どもが理解できるように語って行くのです。そうすれば、日本のように物事が画一化された社会であっても、子どもは、親の信仰を理解し、自分の在り方も考えることでしょう。そして親の人生の物語を聞くことで、子どもにも自然な形で信仰の応答の機会を得させるのです。信仰の継承とは、単に教え込むことではなく、神との関係を深めるための体験を共有することです。また教会全体が信仰の物語を共有し、次の世代に伝えることも大切です。それも、教会全体が神を愛することを大事にすることによってなされるのです。
「いつまでも私たちが幸せになり、私たちが生かされるためである」子々孫々の幸せを願い、主を恐れ、主を愛するように教えていきたいものです。あなたとあなたの教会の上に主の祝福が満ち溢れますように。ではまた明あれ日。
Deuteronomy 6: The Shema—Listening to God
1. Obey God’s Teachings (6:1-10)
Deuteronomy 6 contains one of the most important teachings in the Bible—the Shema, which means “Listen, Israel!”
It begins with a strong statement:
“The Lord is our God. The Lord is One.” (6:4)
This teaches that there is only one true God.
Then, we hear another important command:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.” (6:5)
Faith is not just believing in God—it is loving Him completely. Jesus also said this was the most important commandment (Matthew 22:37).
God is a personal God. He cares for us, He rejoices, and He feels sorrow. Faith is not just about following rules—it is about walking with God in a close relationship.
For example,
Worship is not just a duty—it is a way to thank God.
Giving money is not just a payment—it is a gift to honor God.
Reading the Bible is not just learning—it is loving God’s words and responding to them (6:6).
When we understand this, we will want to share it with the next generation (6:7). Walking with God makes life richer.
2. Remember God’s Blessings (6:10-19)
Deuteronomy 6 also reminds us not to forget God’s grace.
Moses says:
“You will live in houses you did not build and drink from wells you did not dig.” (6:10-11)
This means that God’s blessings are greater than our own efforts.
Faith is not just remembering the past—it is about bringing God’s goodness into daily life.
For example,
When we remember how God helped us, we live with gratitude.
When we recall how God guided us in hard times, we move forward in faith.
Keeping God’s blessings in mind strengthens our faith and gives us joy.
3. Passing Faith to the Next Generation (6:20-25)
At the end of Deuteronomy 6, Moses talks about teaching faith to children.
In some societies, like Japan, Christianity is not the main religion. Children in Christian families might wonder, “Why do my parents care so much about faith?”
Deuteronomy 6:20-21 gives an answer:
“We were slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out with His strong hand.” (6:21)
This means that faith is not just tradition—it is based on what God has done.
Parents can share their story:
Why did I start believing in God?
What has God done in my life?
How has God blessed our family?
This helps children understand faith naturally.
Passing on faith is not about forcing beliefs—it is about sharing experiences. When a church tells stories of faith together, the next generation can see how loving God brings joy and purpose.
Conclusion: Love God, Remember His Blessings, and Pass On Faith
Deuteronomy 6 teaches three important truths:
