申命記30章は、イスラエルの人々が長い旅を終え、いよいよ約束の地カナンに入ろうとする時に、モーセが語った言葉です。この章は、29章に続くモーセの最後のメッセージの締めくくりとして、とても大切な部分です。神さまは「祝福かのろいか」「いのちか死か」という選択を、イスラエルの人々に問いかけています。
1．悔い改めた人を神は見捨てない（30:1–10）
まずモーセは、「イスラエルの人々は、やがて神さまに背を向けてしまう日が来るだろう」と語ります。しかし、それで終わりではありません。神さまは「たとえあなたが神に背を向け、捕虜として遠い国に連れて行かれたとしても、必ずそこから連れ戻そう」と約束してくださっています（4節）。
実際に、昔イスラエルは大きな国に負けて、遠い国に連れて行かれてしまいました。たとえば、紀元前722年に北イスラエルがアッシリアに、紀元前586年に南ユダがバビロンに滅ぼされた出来事がそれです。しかし、その後、悔い改めた人々は元のイスラエルに戻ることができました。つまり、神さまの約束は本当に守られたのです。
神さまは「あなたが悔い改めて心を込めてわたしに従えば、必ず回復させてあげよう」と言われています。神さまは「怒って罰する」ことがあっても、「もう一度立ち直るチャンスを与えてくださる」お方です。この回復のテーマは、後の預言者たち、特にエレミヤやイザヤによっても繰り返し語られました。そして新約聖書でも一貫して伝えられています。
2．神さまの言葉は、遠くではなくあなたのそばにある（30:11–14）
次に、神さまの教えは特別な知識や難しい考え方がないと分からないのではないか、と思うかもしれません。しかしモーセは「この命令は難しすぎるものではない。あなたの口にあり、あなたの心にある」（14節）と語ります。
つまり、神さまの言葉は、すでに私たちの口や心にあるのです。わざわざ遠くまで探しに行く必要はありません。わかりやすく言えば、「すでにあなたの心に届いていますよ」ということです。
新約聖書では、パウロもこの言葉を引用し、「心で信じて、口で言い表すことが救いにつながる」と教えています（ローマ10章より）。つまり、神さまの言葉は今、聖書にすべて記されています。その聖書を前に、あなたがどう決断し、どのように日々を生きるかが大切なのです。
3．いのちを選ぶ―神さまの願い（30:15–20）
神さまはイスラエルの人々に、「あなたの前に、いのちと幸い、死とわざわいを置く。あなたはいのちを選びなさい」（15–19節）と語りました。
ここで言う「いのち」とは、ただ長く生きることや財産が増えることではありません。「神さまを愛し、従い、神さまにより頼んで生きる」その生き方のことです。神さまは、無理やり選ばせたりはしませんが、「できれば、あなたには“いのち”を選んでほしい」と心から願っておられます。
4．今の私たちにも通じること
この話は、昔のイスラエルの人々だけに向けられたものではありません。私たち一人ひとりも、毎日の生活の中で「何を選ぶか」を問われています。たとえば、朝起きて誰と話すか、困ったときにどう対応するか、心が沈んだときにどこに立ち返るか。そのすべて「いのちを選ぶかどうか」につながっています。
神さまの言葉は、遠くにあるのではなく、今、あなたのそばにあります。聖書を開くこと、祈ること、そして小さな一歩でも「神さまを信じて行動すること」が、「いのちを選ぶ」ことになるのです。

Deuteronomy Chapter 30 God Invites Us to Choose Life
1. God Never Abandons Those Who Turn Back to Him (Verses 1–10)
Before the people of Israel entered the land God had promised, Moses spoke to them one last time. He said that one day, they might turn away from God. But even if they are taken far away as captives, God will still be ready to bring them back if they truly return to Him (verse 4).
This really happened in history. Israel lost battles and was taken to faraway countries, like Assyria (in 722 BC) and Babylon (in 586 BC). But later, those who repented came back—and God kept His promise.
God is not a God who only punishes. He also gives new chances. If someone truly returns to Him, He promises to restore their life. This is also a big theme in the prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah, and it continues in the New Testament.
2. God’s Word Is Near You (Verses 11–14)
Some people may think, “God’s commands are too hard to understand.” But Moses said:
“The word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart.” (verse 14)
This means you don’t need to search in the sky or cross the sea to find God’s truth—it’s already with you. God’s voice is close. It speaks gently in your heart.
The apostle Paul used this same verse in the New Testament (Romans 10). He taught that if you believe in your heart and speak with your mouth, you can be saved.
God’s Word is already in the Bible. What matters is how we respond to it each day.
3. Choose Life (Verses 15–20)
God says:
“Today I have set before you life and good, death and evil. Choose life.” (verses 15, 19)
Here, “life” doesn’t only mean living many years. It means living with God—loving Him, trusting Him, and walking with Him.
God gives us the freedom to choose. But He also tells us clearly:
He wants us to choose life.
4. What This Means for Us Today
These words were spoken to Israel long ago, but they are important for us today too.
Every day, we make choices: how to treat others, how to speak, what to believe.
Each small action is a chance to “choose life”—by trusting God and following His ways.
God’s Word is not far away. It’s close to you. You can read the Bible, pray, and take small steps in faith each day. These are all ways to choose life.

God invites us to choose blessing, to choose life.
He does not force us, but He deeply desires us to walk with Him.
