54節以降のレビ人の居住地リストも重要な意味があります。レビ人はイスラエル全土に散らされて住んでいましたが、これは礼拝と律法の教えを隅々まで行き渡らせるためでした。現代でたとえるなら、牧師や宣教者が各地で働いているのに似ています。神が選び、立てられた働き手に対して、その導きに従うことによって、教会もより強く成長していきます。礼拝はイスラエルのアイデンティティの中心であり、それを支える専門家が必要とされたのです。

When you hear the word “worship,” what comes to mind? Singing hymns, praying, listening to a sermon? That’s the usual image. But the Bible speaks of something much deeper. 1 Chronicles chapter 6 is a key passage that reveals the heart of worship. It records the genealogy of the Levites—the people who supported Israel’s worship. At first glance, it looks like just a list of names. But in reality, this chapter is full of meaning and helps us understand what true worship is.
1. Grasp the Big Picture of Chapter 6
This chapter has three main sections.
First, the genealogy of the priests (verses 1–15). It starts with Levi, then Kohath, Aaron, and continues all the way to Jehozadak during the time of exile. Notice something important: the family of Eli is missing. The writer of Chronicles emphasizes the line of Zadok—the legitimate priestly line.
Next, the introduction of the three Levitical clans (verses 16–30): Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. These families formed the foundation of worship service. Famous names like Samuel and Elkanah appear, but their stories are not told here. Why? Because the main purpose is to show the legitimacy of the worship system.
Finally, the list of temple servants and their dwelling places (from verse 31 onward). Here we find the names of musicians appointed by King David—Heman, Asaph, and Ethan. Today, this is similar to pastors and missionaries serving in different places. When we follow the guidance of those God has appointed, the church grows stronger. Worship was the center of Israel’s identity, and it needed dedicated specialists.
