人生が思い通りに進まないとき、あなたはどうしますか。「もう無理だ」とあきらめてしまうでしょうか。それとも、「きっと何とかなる」と希望を持とうとするでしょうか。実は聖書には、「逆転の人生」を象徴する人物が登場します。それが、歴代誌第一4章に記されたヤベツという人物です。ヤベツについての記述はごくわずかですが、その祈りは何千年もの間語り継がれ、今も私たちに希望を与えています。
1．歴代誌4章の全体像：系図の中に隠されたドラマ
ではいつものようにまず全体像を見てまいりましょう。歴代誌は、アダムから始まり、アブラハム、ヤコブ、ユダ、ダビデ、そして捕囚後のゼルバベルへと、神を礼拝する民の歴史をたどります。4章はその中で、ユダ族の系図を補足し、さらにシメオン族の記録が続きます。構成はこうです。
1～23節：ユダ族の系図
ユダ部族は大きく六つのグループにわけられています。ペレツの子孫、ヤベツ、ケルブ、ケニ人オテニエルとカレブ、他のあまり知られていないグループ、そしてユダの息子シェラです。この中でとくにヤベツの祈り（9～10節）は注目すべきポイントです。
24～43節：シメオン族の系図
ここでは、過去に呪われた部族が逆転して復活する姿が描かれます。一見するとただの名前の羅列のように見えるこの章ですが、実は「希望の物語」が隠されています。
2．ヤベツの祈り：短いけれど深い意味
とくに注目すべきなのは、ユダ部族の系図に挿入されているヤベツの短いエピソードと祈りです。ヤベツという名前には「痛み」や「苦しみ」という意味があります。ヤベツがどんな苦しみを背負っていたのか明確にはわかりませんが、彼はその状況に屈せず、神に向かって大胆に祈ります。
「私を大いに祝福し、私の地境を広げてくださいますように。御手が私とともにあってわざわいから遠ざけ、私が痛みを覚えることのないようにしてください。」
バビロン捕囚から帰ってきた人々は、町も神殿も廃墟と化し、瓦礫が山のように積み上がる現実に呆然としていました（ネヘミヤ4:10）。そうした時代背景の中で、歴代誌の著者は、ヤベツの逆転の祈りを通して「祈りによる再起」の可能性を強く伝えています。これは、私たちの祈りのお手本ともいえるものです。ここに「逆転の人生」への鍵があります。
3．礼拝と祈りの共同体的な意義
しかし、ヤベツの祈りで重要なのは、それが本人の願いに留まらず、共同体でささげる祈り、つまり礼拝の祈りになるべきだという点です。のちにダビデと並ぶ神殿建設者ソロモンも、神殿では「神の御名が呼び求められること」が大切だと語っています（歴代誌第二6:33）。この「共に御名を呼び求める」ことこそ、礼拝の本質です。
教会での礼拝は、ただ一人一人が集まった場所ではありません。皆で心を合わせ、神の御名を呼び、人生の逆転を体験する場所なのです。だからこそ、クリスチャンには所属する教会を大切にし、仲間と共に祈ることが求められます。共同体としての祈りが、礼拝の価値をいっそう高めるのです。
4．シメオン族の復活：呪いから祝福へ
ヤベツの祈りのあとに登場するシメオン族にも注目しましょう。彼らは創世記34章での出来事によって父ヤコブからきつく叱られ、散らされた部族でした（創世記49:5-7）。しかし、ここで再び歴史の舞台に現れ、神に信頼して戦いに勝利したエピソードが記されています。これもまた、ヤベツの祈りと同じく、神に頼り、皆で逆転勝利を得た一つの例です。
このように、ヤベツの祈りもシメオン族の復活も、捕囚後に疲れ果てていた民に「あなたも再び立ち上がれる」という希望を語りかけています。

[Season 6] 1 Chronicles 4 – A Prayer That Turns Life Around
When life does not go as you planned, what do you do? Do you give up and say, “It’s impossible”? Or do you try to keep hope and say, “Something will work out”? The Bible tells us about a man who shows what a “life turnaround” looks like. His name is Jabez, and we find him in 1 Chronicles 4. The record about him is very short, but his prayer has been remembered for thousands of years and still gives us hope today.
1. The Big Picture of 1 Chronicles 4: A Drama Hidden in a Genealogy
Let’s start with the big picture. Chronicles begins with Adam, then Abraham, Jacob, Judah, David, and finally Zerubbabel after the exile. Chapter 4 adds details about the tribe of Judah and then the tribe of Simeon. Here is the structure:
- Verses 1–23: The genealogy of Judah
Judah’s tribe is divided into six groups: the descendants of Perez, Jabez, Chelub, the Kenite Othniel and Caleb, some lesser-known families, and Shelah. Among these, Jabez’s prayer in verses 9–10 is the key point. - Verses 24–43: The genealogy of Simeon
Here we see a tribe that was cursed in the past but now comes back to life. At first, this chapter looks like a list of names, but it hides a story of hope.
2. Jabez’s Prayer: Short but Full of Meaning
The short story of Jabez and his prayer is very important. His name means “pain” or “sorrow.” We do not know exactly what suffering he had, but he did not give up. He prayed boldly to God:
“Bless me greatly. Expand my territory. Let Your hand be with me. Keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.”
The people who returned from Babylon were tired and discouraged. Their city and temple were in ruins, and the rubble was everywhere (Nehemiah 4:10). In this hard time, the writer of Chronicles gives them hope through Jabez’s prayer. It shows that prayer can bring a new start. This is a model for our own prayers. Here is the key to a “life turnaround.”
3. Worship and Prayer as a Community
Jabez’s prayer is not only about his personal wish. It points to prayer in worship, as a community. Later, Solomon said that the temple must be a place where God’s name is called (2 Chronicles 6:33). This is the heart of worship: calling on God’s name together.
Church worship is not just people gathering in one place. It is hearts united, calling on God, and experiencing life change. That is why Christians need a church family and should pray together. Community prayer makes worship powerful.
4. The Revival of Simeon: From Curse to Blessing
After Jabez’s prayer, we read about the tribe of Simeon. In Genesis 34, they did something terrible and were cursed by their father Jacob (Genesis 49:5–7). They were scattered and almost forgotten. But here, they return to the stage of history. They trust God and win a battle. This is another example of a life turnaround through faith and unity.
Both Jabez’s prayer and Simeon’s revival tell the tired people after the exile: “You can rise again.”
