1．「理由がわからない不調」と向き合うとき
長いトンネルに入ると、「このトンネルはどこまで続くのだろう」と思ったことはありませんか。つい、少しアクセルを踏んで早く抜け出したくなるものです。しかし、途中で「出口まで後2キロ」といった標識を見かけると、少し安心して、落ち着いて進もうという気持ちにもなります。
ヨブ記36章は、このような出口の見えない時間をどう過ごすべきか、私たちに考えさせてくれる章です。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
まずは、流れを振り返って文脈を確認しましょう。ヨブ記は「なぜ正しい人が苦しむのか」という問いを中心にした知恵文学で、箴言のような「原則」を語る一方で、ヨブという例外の存在を通じて、その単純な議論に警告を与えています。
32〜37章は、友人たちとの議論が行き詰まったあとに登場するエリフによる長い独白で、36章はその中心部分にあたります。神が沈黙している中で、人間の理解がどこまで届くのかを考えさせ、次の章で神が登場する前段となっています。
3．本章の流れ（＝当時の聞こえ方）
では、36章の内容を順に見ていきましょう。
36:1–7「神はすべてをご存じである」 エリフは、神は全能であるだけでなく、完全な知識でその力を使い、悪と正しいことを見分け、正しい人を決して見落とさないと語ります。こうしてヨブやその友人と、同じ土俵で議論しようとします。
36:8–15「苦しみに意味はある」 正しい人が苦しんで、まるで縄で縛られているような時でも、その苦しみが罪と関係しているなら、神はそれを悟らせて悔い改めへ導き、聞き従う人を回復させる、と語ります。一方、神に心を向けない人は、苦しみを恨んで神の救いを逃してしまう。苦難は決して無意味ではない、と主張します。
36:16–23「豊かさが目を曇らせるとき」 神は本来、あなたを苦難から救い出し、豊かさに導く方です。しかし、過去のあなたはどうであれ、今のあなたは、正しい人ではなく「悪しき者の考え方」にとらわれ、神を裁こうとしている。この姿勢や言葉が危険なのだと警告します。神は裁かれるものではなく、私たちに教えてくださる存在だと語ります。
36:24–33「理解を超える神の働きに目を向ける」 エリフは、雨や雲、嵐、雷という人には測れない神の働きに目を向けさせ、賛美を促します。自己中心な問いから、神中心の驚きへ目を向けさせようとしています。
4．本章の読み方
「神は強いが、誰をも蔑まれない」という言葉など、私たちは自分の心に引っかかるフレーズでこの章を読んだつもりになりがちです。苦しみの中でも神は正しく、私たちを見捨てない——そうした励ましも聖書の真理ですが、36章の中心はその前提部分にあると言えます。
また、36章はヨブの問いへの「最終的な答え」ではなく「準備」の段階です。エリフの話には正しい部分も多い反面、個別の苦難をすぐに罪と結びつける推測も混じっています。因果応報的な考えから十分に抜け出していないのです。読者は、エリフの不完全な論法に気づきつつ、神ご自身が語る時を待つ心の準備を促されます。
5．現代の私たちに語り掛けること
この章を現代の私たちに当てはめるなら、「すぐに答えが見つからないときは、まず「世界の設計者」である神に目を向けよう」ということです。窓を開けて外の光を入れ、空を見上げてみる。そして神のご性質を思い浮かべる時間を、意識的に持つことです。
エリフが促したように「わからなさ」をそのまま抱えつつ、神が計り知れないほど大きな存在であると認めることから始めてみてはどうでしょう。ある意味、ここは苦難の中でどう過ごすかを語る箇所だと言えます。苦しみの意味をすぐに決めつけず、神の前で心を開いて教えを受ける姿勢を大切にする——それが、沈黙の夜を越えて神の声を待つ信仰です。そして、それこそが今日を前向きに生きるための土台になるのです。ではまた明日の続きをお楽しみに。
[Season 6] An Easy-to-Understand Explanation of Job Chapter 36
1. | When You Face a Trouble with No Clear Reason
When you enter a long tunnel, have you ever thought, “How far does this tunnel go?” You may want to press the accelerator and get out quickly. But when you see a sign that says, “Exit in 2 kilometers,” you feel a little relieved and slow down.
Job chapter 36 is a chapter that helps us think about how to spend time like this, when the end is not yet visible.
2. Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
First, let us review the flow of the story. The Book of Job is wisdom literature that centers on the question, “Why do righteous people suffer?” Like Proverbs, it presents general principles, but through Job as an exception, it warns against simple explanations.
Chapters 32 to 37 are a long speech by Elihu, who appears after the discussion with Job’s friends reaches a dead end. Chapter 36 stands at the center of his speech. While God remains silent, this chapter shows how far human understanding can reach and prepares the way for God’s appearance in the next chapter.
3. The Flow of the Chapter (How It Would Have Sounded to the First Listeners)
Let us now follow the flow of chapter 36.
36:1–7 “God Knows Everything”
Elihu says that God is not only almighty but also uses His power with perfect knowledge. God can distinguish between evil and what is right and never overlooks the righteous. In this way, Elihu tries to stand on common ground with Job and the others.
36:8–15 “Suffering Has Meaning”
Even when righteous people suffer and feel bound like with ropes, if the suffering is connected to sin, God teaches them, leads them to repentance, and restores those who listen. On the other hand, those who do not turn their hearts to God grow resentful and miss God’s rescue. Elihu claims that suffering is never meaningless.
36:16–23 “When Prosperity Clouds Your Vision”
God’s true desire is to bring you out of suffering and lead you to abundance. However, no matter what you were like in the past, Elihu says that now you are captured by “the thinking of the wicked” and are trying to judge God. He warns that this attitude and these words are dangerous. God is not one to be judged but a teacher who instructs us.
36:24–33 “Turning Our Eyes to God’s Work Beyond Understanding”
Elihu points to rain, clouds, storms, and thunder—God’s works that humans cannot measure—and calls people to praise. He tries to shift their focus from self-centered questions to awe centered on God.
4. How to Read This Chapter
We often read this chapter by focusing on phrases that catch our attention, such as “God is mighty and does not despise anyone.” It is true that God is righteous and does not abandon us in suffering, and this is an important biblical truth. However, that is not the main focus of chapter 36.
This chapter is not the final answer to Job’s question but a preparation. While Elihu says many correct things, he also makes assumptions that quickly connect personal suffering with sin, showing that he has not fully escaped cause-and-effect thinking. Readers are invited to notice these limits and prepare their hearts for the moment when God Himself will speak.
5. What This Chapter Says to Us Today
If we apply this chapter to our own lives, it invites us to look first to God, the “Designer of the world,” when answers do not come quickly. Open a window, let in the light, and look up at the sky. Take time to think about God’s character.
Like Elihu suggests, why not begin by holding onto uncertainty while acknowledging that God is far greater than we can measure? In a sense, this chapter teaches us how to spend time in difficulty. Do not quickly decide the meaning of suffering, but keep a heart open before God and a posture ready to be taught.
