1．「説明されない現実」と、私たちはどう向き合うのか
一生懸命やってきたのに評価されない。真面目に生きてきたのに、なぜか不条理な出来事が重なる。そんなとき、私たちは思わずこう問いかけます。「こんなことをして、いったい何の意味があったのだろうか」
ヨブ記42章は、その問いの「果て」に置かれた章です。しかし、ここで示されるのは、納得のいく説明ではありません。苦しみの理由は最後まで語られないままです。それでもなお、人はどうやって生き直すことができるのか。ヨブ記42章は、その静かな可能性を私たちの前に差し出しています。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
ヨブ記42章は、書全体の結論部です。38〜41章の神の語りを受け、ヨブの短い応答（42:1–6）と、物語としての結末（42:7–17）が描かれます。長く続いた詩的対話が終わり、再び散文体に戻る点も重要です。議論の時が終わり、出来事としての結末が語られる段階に入ったことを示しています。苦難の理由を説明しないまま終わる点で、ヨブ記は知恵文学の中でも際立っています。
3．本章の流れ
では、42章の流れを見てまいりましょう。
42:1–6「神を説明する言葉が終わるとき」神の語りを受けたヨブは、自分の理解の限界を認めます。「耳で聞いていたが、今は目で見た」という言葉は、知識が増えたという意味ではありません。神について「知っているつもり」で語ってきた姿勢そのものが崩れたのです。
ここでの「悔い」は罪の告白というより、これまでの自己主張や言説を撤回し、神の前に沈黙する姿勢を指しています。神を論じる者から、神に応答する者へと立場が変えられました。
42:7–9「正しかったのは誰か」次に神は、ヨブの友人たちを退けます。彼らは多くの点で正統的なことを語っていました。しかし問題だったのは結論ではなく、苦しむ人の前で神を断定的に語った姿勢でした。
一方ヨブは、問い、抗議し、ときに混乱しながらも、神との関係を断ち切りませんでした。そのヨブが、今度は友人たちのために祈る者として立たされます。苦難を通った者が執り成す者となる、という逆説がここに描かれています。
42:10–17「説明なきままの回復」神が友人たちに対してヨブを「正しく語った者」と呼び、彼らのための祈りをヨブに委ねたことは、ヨブが友人たちの言うような者ではなかったことを、神自身が静かに示した出来事でした。苦しみの理由は説明されません。しかし、神がヨブを中心に世界はできていないことを示しつつも、自分の側に立っておられること、神が自分を心にかけておられたことが明らかになったとき、ヨブにとってそれ以上の説明は必要なくなったのでしょう。自分の正しさが神との関係の中で回復された――そのこと自体が、ヨブには十分だったのです。
4．現代の私たちへの示唆
ヨブの終わりはハッピーエンドです。しかし、この章は、「苦しんでもいずれ報われる」ことを保証しているものではありません。説明できない現実があること、正しく生きることと正しく理解されることは一致しないこと、世界は人間中心にはできていないこと、最終的に残るのは人ではなく神のことばであること、そして信仰とはすべてに納得することではないこと、問いを抱えたまま神に支えられて人生を先に進めること、多くのことが語られながら、静かな希望へ心を向けさせる書です。

— Can a Person Stand Up Again Even Without Clear Answers? —
1. How Do We Face a Reality That Is Never Explained?
We work hard, but we are not recognized.
We live honestly, yet unreasonable events keep happening.
At such times, we often ask ourselves,
“What was the meaning of all this?”
Job 42 is placed at the very end of this question.
But what is given here is not a clear explanation.
The reason for the suffering is never explained.
Even so, how can a person start living again?
Job 42 quietly shows this possibility to us.
2. Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Job 42 is the conclusion of the entire book.
After God’s speeches in chapters 38–41,
we read Job’s short reply (42:1–6)
and the story’s ending (42:7–17).
It is important that the text returns to prose.
The long poetic debates are finished.
Now the time of argument ends,
and the outcome is told as an event.
Job ends without explaining the reason for suffering.
For wisdom literature, this makes Job very unique.
3. The Flow of Chapter 42
Let us now look at the flow of the chapter.
42:1–6 “When Words That Explain God Come to an End”
After hearing God’s words,
Job admits the limits of his understanding.
When he says,
“I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you,”
this does not mean that he gained more knowledge.
Rather, his attitude of speaking about God
as if he fully understood Him collapses.
Here, “repentance” is not mainly a confession of sin.
It means withdrawing his former arguments
and standing silent before God.
Job’s position changes
from one who explains God
to one who responds to God.
42:7–9 “Who Was Really Right?”
Next, God rejects the words of Job’s friends.
They often said things that sounded correct.
The problem was not their ideas,
but the way they spoke about God
in front of a suffering person.
Job, on the other hand, questioned, protested,
and spoke in confusion,
but he never cut his relationship with God.
Now Job is placed in a new role:
one who prays for his friends.
Here we see a paradox:
the one who passed through suffering
becomes the one who intercedes for others.
42:10–17 “Restoration Without Explanation”
God calls Job
the one who spoke rightly,
and He entrusts the prayer for the friends to him.
This quietly shows
that Job was not who his friends said he was.
The reason for suffering is still unexplained.
Yet God makes it clear
that the world does not exist around Job,
but also that God was on Job’s side,
that God cared for him.
At that moment,
Job no longer needed more explanation.
His rightness was restored
within his relationship with God.
That alone was enough for him.
4. A Message for Us Today
Job’s ending looks like a happy ending.
But this chapter does not promise
that suffering will always be rewarded.
It tells us many things:
There are realities that cannot be explained.
Living rightly and being understood rightly are not the same.
The world is not built with humans at the center.
In the end, what remains is not human words,
but God’s word.
Faith does not mean understanding everything.
It means moving forward in life
while holding questions,
supported by God.
Job guides our hearts
toward a quiet kind of hope.
