1．病気になったヤコブ(48:1-7)
ヤコブは、年老いて病気となりました。そこでヨセフの家族が見舞います。すると、彼は力を振り絞り、床の上に座り、自分の半生について語り始めるのです。「全能の神はカナンの地ルズで私に現れ、私を祝福して仰せられた」（4節）と。ヤコブは「全能の神」との出会いを語り始めました。すべてはそこから始まったからです。そしてその神は「きょうのこの日まで、ずっと私の羊飼いであられた神」（15節）だったと言います。
ただ、全能の神が共にいたのなら、なぜに、あれほど、苦難に満ちた人生を歩まなければならなかったのか、と思うところです。しかし、全能の神がいたからこそ、あの程度で済んだ、ということもあったのかもしれません。ヤコブは自らの愚かさのゆえに、引き起こした難しい人生を通りぬけるにあたり、その都度、神の助けと守りを味わってきたというわけです。それは、まるで神が羊飼いのように、彼を養われたと感じるものでした。そして、神が約束されたように、ヤコブの所有は増え広がりました（4節）。
神に従う人生は決して単純ではありません。振り返ってみれば、確かに神は、この私を祝福してくださった、私に最善をなしてくださった、と思うことはあるものです。しかし同時に、その途上には、思い出せば悲しくもなり、自分の思う通りにはいかなかったことも多くあるものでしょう。神がいるというのに、なぜこうなってしまったのか、と思うようなことが。しかしそうであっても、神は私に真実であったという思いに、変わりはなく、愚かな自分の人生も、神あってこそ豊かにさせられたし、守られたと思うことがあるものです。
5節、ヤコブはヨセフの子を見ると、彼の二人の子マナセとエフライムを自分の子として宣言します。これはどういう意味であろうか、と思います。一説に、後の12部族のあり方を、正当化するための補足的な記事とするものがあります。しかし最愛の妻ラケルが他の女奴隷ビルハ、ジルパと同様に、たった二人の子しか授からなかったことに対して、ラケルの立場を高めようとするヤコブなりの愛情の表れだったのかもしれません。
2．ヤコブの祝福（48:8-22）
ヤコブは、自分の頭がしっかりしている内に、信仰によって子どもたちを祝福しようとしました。長子の権利は、長子のルベンが父の寝床を汚したことで（創世記35:22）ヨセフへと与えられたと聖書は言います（１歴代5:2）。確かにヤコブは、ここでヨセフに、自らに祝福として与えられた長子の権利を継がせようとしたのでしょう。
またヤコブは、自らの経験に添ったのか、ヨセフの長子マナセではなく弟エフライムを祝福するのです。しかし、ヤコブの考えている長子の権利と、神が考えておられた祝福の継承は、必ずしも同じではありませんでした。エフライム部族は後にイスラエル北王国の最初の王様ヤロブアム1世を生み出します。しかし、ヤコブの霊的伝統を受け継ぎ、イエス・キリストの系図を継承する祝福は、ルベンでも、ヨセフでも、エフライムでもなく、ユダに与えられたのです。
またヤコブはヨセフにシェケムを与える約束をしました。しかしながらシェケムの町は、実際には、イスラエル人がエジプトから脱出し帰国した際に、エフライムとマナセの境界となり（ヨシュア17:7）、逃れの町（ヨシュア20:7，21:21）、また、レビ人の町としてケハテの子たちのものとされています（１歴代6:67）。
つまり、ヤコブが思い描いたような未来は起こらなかったのです。神のみこころはヤコブの思いを超えて進められていました。それは、私たちも同じです。人間に神の御心を知り尽くすことはできません。人間の未来は、謙虚に考え、神に委ねるべきものなのです。
そして同時に、信仰をもって子を祝福することも教えられるところです。子どもを見れば色々と、不完全であり、気を揉むことも多々あります。しかし親が子にしてあげられることは、愛情を注ぐことで、祝福すること以外にはないのです。子どもが本当に身につけたい能力というのは、子どもが自ら見出していくものです。親に出来ることは、子どもの努力を側面で励まし続け、祝福し続けることです。今日も、信仰によって家族を祝福してまいりましょう。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
●Chapter 48: Jacob’s Testament
- Jacob Became Sick (48:1-7)
Jacob grew old and sick. Joseph’s family came to visit him. He mustered his strength, sat down on the floor, and began to talk about his life. “The Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, saying” (verse 4). Jacob began to talk about his encounter with “the Almighty.” Because it all started from there. And that God was “my God who has been my shepherd until this day” (verse 15).
However, if the Almighty God was with him, I wonder why he had to live such a difficult life. However, it may have been because the Almighty God was there that he was able to endure to that extent. Jacob experienced God’s help and protection each time he went through the difficult life that he caused because of his own foolishness. It was as if God had provided for him like a shepherd. And as God had promised, Jacob’s possessions increased and spread (verse 4).
A life of following God is never simple. Looking back, there are times when we think that God has indeed blessed us and done the best for us. However, along the way, there are many times when we feel sad and things did not go as we expected. There are times when we wonder why things turned out the way they did, even though God is there. Even so, the feeling that God was true to us remains unchanged, and we sometimes think that it was only because of God that our foolish lives were enriched and protected.
In verse 5, when Jacob sees Joseph’s children, he declares his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, as his own. I wonder what this means. One theory is that this is a supplementary article to justify the existence of the 12 tribes later on. However, it may have been Jacob’s way of showing his love for his beloved wife Rachel, who, like the other slave girls Bilhah and Zilpah, only had two children. - Jacob’s Blessing (48:8-22)
Jacob tried to bless his children by faith while he was still sane. The Bible says that the birthright was given to Joseph because his firstborn son, Reuben, defiled his father’s bed (Genesis 35:22) (1 Chronicles 5:2). Indeed, Jacob here wanted Joseph to inherit the birthright that had been given to him as a blessing.
Also, perhaps based on his own experience, Jacob blesses Joseph’s younger brother Ephraim, not his firstborn son Manasseh. However, Jacob’s idea of the birthright and God’s idea of inheritance of the blessing were not necessarily the same. The tribe of Ephraim later produced Jeroboam I, the first king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. However, the blessing of inheriting Jacob’s spiritual tradition and the genealogy of Jesus Christ was given to Judah, not to Reuben, Joseph, or Ephraim.
Jacob also promised to give Shechem to Joseph. However, the city of Shechem actually became the border between Ephraim and Manasseh when the Israelites escaped from Egypt and returned home (Joshua 17:7), and was a city of refuge (Joshua 20:7, 21:21), and was also given to the sons of Kohath as a Levite city (1 Chronicles 6:67).
In other words, the future that Jacob had envisioned did not happen. God’s will was proceeding beyond Jacob’s thoughts. The same is true for us. Humans cannot fully know God’s will. Humans’ future should be considered humbly and entrusted to God.
At the same time, we are also taught to bless our children with faith. When we look at children, we see that they are imperfect in many ways and there are many things to worry about. However, there is nothing parents can do for their children other than showering love and blessing them. Children will discover for themselves what abilities they truly want to acquire. What parents can do is to continue to encourage and bless their children’s efforts from the sidelines. Let us continue to bless our families with faith today. God’s Word is true. May God bless us.
