1．挨拶（1:1-6）
今日からローマ人への手紙を読んでまいります。使徒の働きでは、パウロがローマに到着したところで終わっていました。しかし、このローマ人への手紙は、パウロがまだローマに到着する前に書かれています。となるとそれ以前に書かれたもの、実際には、第三回伝道旅行の途中、コリントに滞在していた三か月間に書かれたのではないか、と考えられています（使徒20:3）。事実パウロは、そこからローマ、さらにはスペインに伝道しようと計画を立てていました。しかし、その前に、エルサレムの貧しい同朋に、ギリシア各地で集めた献金を届ける責任もあり、彼は、ローマへは行かず、エルサレムに戻っているのです。ですから、ローマへ行く思いは熱かったと思われます。
ただローマの教会は、パウロが設立に関わった教会ではありませんでした。ですから、パウロは、事前に挨拶を送り、さらに自己紹介もかねて、この手紙を書いたのでしょう。そこでこの手紙は、パウロが自分自身の信仰的な確信をまとめるようにして書かれています。
当時の教会では、まだ、どこの神学校を出たとか、どんな団体の肩書を持っているかなど、全く関係のないことでした。ですから1節パウロは、自分が、キリスト・イエスに仕える者であり、神の福音を伝えるために選ばれ、「使徒」とされた者だと述べています。そして、自分がどのような信仰理解に立っているのかを明らかにします。そのような意味で、パウロの自己紹介文は、15章に及ぶと考えてもよいのかもしれません。
これは、今日でもいえることなのかもしれません。牧師、伝道師も色々です。大切なのはその人がどんな信仰理解に立っているかです。そして教会に訪ねて来る働き人を見て、どこぞの神学校を出ているということで、安心してはなりません。どのような信仰に立っているのか、そこが働き人を判断する上で、大事な点になるのです。
2．正しい人は信仰によって生きる（1:7-17）
2節からパウロは自分の信仰について語り始めます。まず、自分が与えられた福音は、旧約聖書に予め語られた、約束の救い主、イエス・キリストに関わること、十字架にかかり、死んで後に復活されたイエス・キリストについてである、私があなたがたと分かち合いたいのはそれだ、というわけです。
16、17節は、ローマ人への手紙の要約とも言われている箇所です。パウロは、福音には神の力が現されていると言います。それは、信じるすべての人を救いに導くものだということです。実際には、それは神が、私たちの救いのためにしてくださったことを語り、信仰によってその行為を受け止めることが、救いになるのだ、と言うのです。
3．人間の基本的な問題
こうしてパウロは、18節から本題に入り、福音について語ります。そこでまず彼が語るのは、福音を必要とする私たち人間の現実です。人間がいかに神の目から見て、罪深い者であるかを語るのです。
統計数理研究所という調査機関によると、おみくじ占いまで含めた宗教行動を取る日本人は、人口全体の70％、実際に信仰する宗教を定めている人は約30％だと言います。そして30％の内訳はほとんどが新興宗教、つまりご利益的な宗教心が日本人の特徴なのだと言います。問題は、木や石で出来た偶像をご利益的に拝む人は、聖く、義しい神には、興味がないことです。神はそもそもそのようなものではありません。そこで神をご利益ではなく、本当に知りたいと思う方は、よく聞いてください。19節以降は、私たちの人間や社会の現実を語っています。一言で要約すると、人間は神を求めない、めいめい自分の目に見えてよいと思える人生を生きている、その結果自己中心で罪深い人生を生きている、ということなのです。著者パウロのことばに、人間理解、神理解を深めていくこととしましょう。
Romans 1 Greetings and Introduction to the Gospel
1 Greeting (1:1-6)
Today we begin to read the letter to the Romans. In the book of Acts, we ended with Paul’s arrival in Rome. But this letter to the Romans was written before Paul arrived in Rome. In fact, it must have been written during the three months he spent in Corinth in the middle of his third missionary journey (Ac 20:3). In fact, Paul had planned to evangelize from there to Rome and then to Spain. But first he had the responsibility of delivering the offerings he had collected throughout Greece to his poor friends in Jerusalem, so he did not go to Rome, but returned to Jerusalem. Therefore, it seems that his desire to go to Rome was passionate.
However, the church in Rome was not the one that Paul had helped to establish. Therefore, Paul probably wrote this letter to send his greetings in advance and also to introduce himself. So this letter is written as Paul sums up his own religious beliefs.
In the church at that time, it did not matter what seminary you graduated from or what organizational title you held. So in verse 1 Paul states that he is a servant of Christ Jesus, chosen and made an “apostle” to preach the gospel of God. He then clarifies the kind of understanding of faith that he represents. In this sense, Paul’s introductory statement can be considered 15 chapters long.
This may still be true today. Pastors and evangelists are many things. What is important is the kind of faith understanding on which he or she stands. When you see a worker coming to your church, you should not be relieved just because he or she has graduated from some seminary or other. What kind of faith he or she has is an important point in judging a worker.
2. The Righteous Live by Faith (1:7-17)
Beginning in verse 2, Paul begins to talk about his faith. First, he says that the gospel given to him is about the promised Savior, Jesus Christ, who was spoken of before in the Old Testament, who was crucified, who died, and who later rose again.
Verses 16 and 17 are what is called a summary of Romans. Paul says that the power of God is revealed in the gospel. Paul says that the gospel reveals the power of God that leads to the salvation of all who believe. In fact, he says, it speaks of what God has done for our salvation, and it is our acceptance of that action by faith that saves.
3. the basic human problem
So Paul gets down to business in verse 18 and talks about the gospel. What he begins with is the reality of our human need for the gospel. He talks about how sinful people are in the eyes of God.
According to a research institute called the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, the number of Japanese who engage in religious behavior, including fortune telling, is 70% of the population and about 30% of those who actually have a set religion to believe in. And the breakdown of the 30% is mostly new religions, which means that religious beliefs that are beneficial are a characteristic of the Japanese. The problem is that those who worship idols made of wood or stone for their own benefit have no interest in a holy and righteous God. God is not like that at all. So for those of you who really want to know God and not for profit, please listen carefully. In short, this means that human beings do not seek God, but live lives that seem good in their own eyes, and as a result, they live self-centered and sinful lives. Let us deepen our understanding of man and God by following the words of the author, Paul.
