28章　サムエルを呼び出したサウル

1．追い詰められたサウル

ダビデは、アキシュの護衛になり、イスラエルへの戦闘に備えるように命じられました。ダビデは窮地に立たされたのです。興味深いことに、長い間ダビデを敵としていたサウルもまた窮地に立たされています。人生というものは、不思議なものです。苦しい思いをしている、つらい思いをしているのは、あなただけではない、という状況があるものなのです。

ペリシテ人はシュネムに陣を敷き、対イスラエル戦に備えていました。シェネムは、イスラエル北部にあるガリラヤ湖に近い町です。ペリシテ人の根拠地は、イスラエル南部、死海の西側、地中海沿いの地域です。サウルの根城はその中間ギブアにありましたから、ペリシテ人は、サウルの軍を北へ北へと追い詰め、イスラエルの奥深くに侵入していたということになります。神に背を向けてきたサウルです。誰も当てにならない事態に及んでは、サウルも絶望的です。サウルは、「ペリシテ人の陣営を見て恐れ、その心は激しく震えた」（5節）とされます。「サウルは、主に伺ったが、主は、夢によっても、ウリムによっても、預言者によってもお答えにならなかった」（6節）と言います。サムエル亡き後、サウルに助言や励ましを与える者はなく、彼は主の御旨を知る術がありませんでした。結果サウルは、自分が忌み嫌い追放した霊媒や口寄せに頼ることになるのです。サウルは、霊媒師を通して、死の世界からサムエルを呼び出し、助けを得ようとするのです。人は、誰も頼る人がいない、そしてまことの神を否定するならば、その結果は、このような呪術的な手段に頼る他はない、ということなのでしょう。

2．霊媒の宣告

人は、窮地にあってなすべきことはわかっているものです。ただ人は、その結論を受け入れられないからこそ、自分の思う通りの結論を語ってくれる人を探し続け、人から人へと渡り歩き、仕舞には占い、呪術へと向かうのです。しかし、正しいことをなさるまことの神以外に本当の救いはありえません。

死人から呼び出されたサムエルが、サウルに語ったことはサウルを驚愕させるものでした。サウルは、ペリシテに敗北するのみならず、死ぬことを宣告されたのです。

サウルの問題は、王位に伴う権威と権力を味わうことに執着し過ぎたことでした。まことの権威が、神にあることを忘れていく時に、人間は、権力を正しく行使することに失敗するのです。サウルは、自らの地位も権力も与えられたものであり、いつでもそれは返さなくてはならないことを弁えておく必要がありました。そして、神に地位と権力を与えられた以上、神の預言者を通じて語られる神のことばには徹底して聞き従わなければなりませんでした。しかし、サウルは預言者に全面的に聞くことができず、自分を主張しようとしました。自分を神としたのです。そこにサウルの破滅の根本問題があります。サウルに神の答えがなかったというのは、サウルを拒否したというよりも、神は既に十分語っており、これ以上語るべきことはなかった、ということです。

ともあれ、このサウルの結末に教えられることは、私たちは、いつでも究極の権威者である神を覚え、神に従い、神に与えられたものはいつでも返す心備えをしておくべきことです。自分に与えられた地位も、富も、名誉も皆神に与えられたものであり、神の恵みなければ、ここまで来られなかったという事実を忘れてはならないのです。そのような心が失われる時に、私たちは本来敵とすべきではないものを敵として、ある日、突如本当の敵に直面させられる結果となるのです。

敵とすべきではないものを敵としているサウル的な自分に気づいたら、いつでも悔い改めることが大切でしょう。そうでなければ私たちは、知らずに破滅の道に進んでいることになります。長く的外れな人生を歩み、突如の危機に何も準備を出来ていない自分に愕然とさせられることになります。真の敵を見誤らない歩みを今日も歩ませていただきましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 28 Saul who called Samuel

1. Saul cornered

David became an escort to Akish and was ordered to prepare for the battle against Israel. David was in trouble. Interestingly, Saul, who had long been an enemy of David, is also in dire straits. Life is a mysterious thing. There are situations where you are not the only one who is suffering or having a hard time.

The Philistines set up in Shunem to prepare for the war against Israel. Shunem is a town near the Sea of ​​Galilee in northern Israel. The Philistines are based in southern Israel, to the west of the Dead Sea, and along the Mediterranean Sea. Since Saul’s root castle was in Gibua  in the middle, the Philistines had driven Saul’s army north to north and invaded deep into Israel. Saul has turned his back on God. Saul is also hopeless in situations where no one can count on him. Saul is said to be ” afraid; terror filled his heart” (ver. 5). “He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.” (ver. 6). After the death of Samuel, no one gave Saul any advice or encouragement, and he had no way of knowing the will of the Lord. As a result, Saul relies on the medium and spiritualism that he hates and exiles. Saul, through a spirit medium, summons Samuel from the world of death and seeks help. If no one relies on anyone, and if he denies the true God, the result is that he has no choice but to rely on such magical means.

2. Declaration of medium

People know what to do in a difficult situation. However, because people cannot accept the conclusion, they continue to look for someone who can tell the conclusion they want, walk from person to person, fortune-telling in the end, and going to magic. But there can be no real salvation other than the true God who does the right thing.

What Samuel, who was summoned by the dead, told Saul was astonishing. Not only was Saul defeated by Philistines, he was sentenced to death.

Saul’s problem was that he was too obsessed with enjoying the authority and power that accompanies his throne. When we forget that the true authority is in God, humans fail to exercise power correctly. Saul had to say that he was given his position and power and that he had to return it at all times. And, as long as God gave us status and power, we had to thoroughly listen to God’s Word spoken through God’s prophets. However, Saul could not fully hear his prophet and tried to assert himself. He made himself a god. There is the fundamental problem of Saul’s ruin. Saul’s lack of God’s answer means that God had already spoken enough and had nothing more to say, rather than rejecting Saul.

In any case, what is taught in this Saul ending is that we should always remember God, the ultimate authority, obey Him, and be prepared to always return what is given to Him. We must not forget the fact that the status, wealth, and honor given to us were all given to God, and we could not have come this far without the grace of God. When such a loss of mind occurs, one day we are suddenly faced with a real enemy, with something that should not be the enemy as an enemy.

Whenever you find yourself Saul-like, who has something that shouldn’t be your enemy, it’s important to repent. Otherwise we are unknowingly on the road to ruin. You will be shocked by yourself, who has lived a long and irrelevant life and is not ready for a sudden crisis. Let’s take a step that does not misunderstand the true enemy today.
