1．帰ってきたヤコブ（32:1-21）
伯父ラバンに仕えて、既に20年（31:41）、ラバンに跡取り息子ができるとラバンのヤコブに対する態度は変わっていきます。居場所を失ったヤコブは、神に語られたとおりに約束の地であり、故郷でもあるカナンへ帰ることを決意するのです（31:18）。ヤコブが旅を続けると、マハナイムで再び不思議な経験をしています。当時のマハナイムは、一説にヤボクの北、現在のキルベト・マハネーに位置すると考えられています。かつて家を出た最初の夜、ベテルで一夜を明かした時にも、ヤコブは夢の中で神の励ましを受ける経験をしました。今回も、それに匹敵する不思議な励ましの経験です。
このようなエピソードが記されるのは、ヤコブの心の不安を物語るものであるのかもしれません。というのも、向かっている故郷には、かつてヤコブに騙されて怒り狂い、ヤコブを殺そうとした兄エサウがいたからです。果たして、その兄エサウと、和解し、平和に暮らしていけるだろうかと考えたのは間違いないでしょう。
ヤコブは、兄エサウに、前もって使いを出し、感触を探ろうとしています。するとその使いは、兄エサウが、400人のしもべを引き連れて、こちらに向かっている、という情報を持ち帰りました。ヤコブは、もしや兄は仕返しをしようとしているのか、胸騒ぎを覚えたようです（8節）。兄エサウは、今や傭兵隊の隊長並みの勢力を誇る存在になっていたのです。何かが起こっても、彼には到底太刀打ちのできない勢力です。彼は、エサウの好意を得るために、あれこれ対策を考えました。
ヤコブは、頭を使い宿営を二つに分ける対策を考え、（7-8節）続いて祈り（9-12節）、さらに対策を考え直して贈り物を先に進ませる対策を考え（13-21節）、さらに祈っています（22-32節）。不安に翻弄されたヤコブのありのままの姿が描かれています。ただそのような状況で祈った彼の二つの祈りは、私たちの祈りがどうあるべきかを教えるものです。最初の祈りの中で、彼は自分が神の恵みを受けるには全く足りない者であることを素直に告白しています（10節）。続いて自らの心の恐れを素直に打ち明けています（11節）。さらに「神の祝福のことば」の約束を神に掲げています。
2．神を味方につけたヤコブ（32:22-32）
続く祈りは、確信を掴むための祈りでしょう。その日の夜、ヤコブは、皆にヤボクの川を渡らせると、独りそこにとどまりました。そして「ある人」と夜明けまで格闘したと言います。「ある人」は、悪霊とする説もありますが、通説では神です（32:28,30）。格闘は、ヤコブのもものつがいがはずされ、足が不自由になったとあるように、物理的に体と体をぶつけ合う激しいものでした。しかし象徴的な内容で、不安の中で必死に神に寄り縋った、ヤコブの現実を語るものです。そしてヤコブは、その格闘と思しき祈りによって、ようやく将来の見通しと、平安を得るに至るのです。
それにしても、神が人間に負けるなど、実に不思議な表現です。ただそれは、神がヤコブよりも弱かった、と言っているのではなく、弱いヤコブの執拗さに勝てなかったということでしょう。ホセアが言うように、「ヤコブは勝ったが、泣いて願った」（12:4）のです。つまり、神は、泣きじゃくって体当たりしてくる子どものようなヤコブに、勝ちを譲ってあげたのです。実はこれが祈りと言うべきでしょう。
神の愛の懐に飛び込んで、本当に、私はあなたの恵みを受けるに値しない者です。けれども、あなたの祝福がなければこの先一歩も進めない者です。あなたはどのような人にも祝福を約束してくださるのですから、この私に、その恵みを注いでくださいと体当たりする。神は哀れな人間を見捨てることはない。イエスも、人を人と思わない不正な裁判官に絡み続け、裁判の執行を勝ち取ったやもめの例を挙げて、いつでも祈るべきで失望してはならないことを教えられました。
なおヤコブはこの戦いで「イスラエル」という新しい名を与えられました。それは「神と争う者」という意味で、後に神の民の名となりました。また、神との格闘の故に得た祝福の素晴らしい経験を記念し、その場所を「ペヌエル」と名づけました（32:30）。太陽が彼の上に昇ったと言います。まさに新しい出発を照らす、希望の光であったことでしょう。

Chapter 32: Penuel’s experience.
- the returning Jacob (32:1-21)
Already 20 years into the service of his uncle Laban (31:41), Laban’s attitude towards Jacob changes when Laban has an heir son. Having lost his place, Jacob decides to return to Canaan, the Promised Land and his homeland, as God had told him (31:18). As Jacob continues his journey, he has another strange experience in Mahanaim. Mahanaim at that time is thought by one theory to be located north of Yabok, in present-day Khirbet Mahaneh. Once, on his first night away from home, when he spent the night in Bethel, Jacob experienced God’s encouragement in a dream. This time, too, it is an experience of wondrous encouragement comparable to that.
The fact that such an episode is recorded may be a testimony to the anxiety in Jacob’s heart. Jacob’s brother Esau, who had once tried to kill him in a rage after being tricked by Jacob, was on his way to his homeland. No doubt he wondered if he would ever be able to reconcile with his brother Esau and live in peace with him.
Jacob sends a messenger to his brother Esau in advance to find out what he thinks. The messenger brings back information that his brother Esau is on his way with 400 servants. Jacob seems to feel a stirring in his heart, wondering if his brother is trying to get back at him (v. 8). His brother Esau was now as powerful as a mercenary captain. A force he could never hope to compete with if something were to happen. He thought of all kinds of measures to gain Esau’s favour.
Jacob uses his head to devise measures to divide the camp in two (vv 7-8), followed by prayer (vv 9-12), and then rethinks his measures to allow the gift to go ahead (vv 13-21) and further prayer (vv 22-32). This is a picture of Jacob as he was, tossed about by anxiety. But his two prayers, prayed in such circumstances, teach us what our prayers should be. In the first prayer, he honestly confesses that he is completely inadequate to receive God’s grace (v. 10). He then honestly confesses the fears of his own heart (v. 11). He also holds up to God the promise of ‘God’s blessed word’. - jacob with god on his side (32:22-32).
The prayer that follows is probably a prayer to grasp conviction. That night, Jacob had everyone cross the river Jabbok and remained there alone. He wrestled with ‘a certain man’ until dawn. Some say that the ‘certain one’ was an evil spirit, but the common view is that it was God (32:28,30). The wrestling was intense, with physical body against body, as in the story where Jacob’s thighs were dismounted and he was crippled. But it is symbolic and speaks to the reality of Jacob, who desperately clung to God in the midst of his anxiety. And Jacob’s struggle and seeming prayer finally gave him a future perspective and peace.
It is a very strange expression, however, for God to be defeated by a human being. But this is not to say that God was weaker than Jacob, but that he could not overcome the persistence of the weak Jacob. As Hosea says, ‘Jacob won, but he wept and wished’ (12:4). In other words, God gave the victory to Jacob, who was like a weeping, physically assaulting child. In fact, this should be called prayer.
Jumping into the bosom of God’s love, truly, I am unworthy of your grace. But I am one who cannot go a step further without your blessing. You promise your blessing to every person, so you physically hit me and ask me to pour out your grace on me. God never abandons a wretched human being. Jesus also gave the example of the widower who kept entangling himself with an unjust judge who did not regard people as people and won the execution of his case, teaching us that we should always pray and not be disappointed.
Jacob was given a new name in this battle, ‘Israel’. It means ‘one who struggles with God’ and later became the name of God’s people. He also commemorated the wonderful experience of blessing he had gained because of his struggle with God by naming the place ‘Penuel’ (32:30). He says that the sun rose over him. It would indeed have been a beacon of hope, illuminating a new beginning.
A pinch is an opportunity. It is an important time to know the blessings and peace we ask for through ‘the word of God’s blessing’. Our predicted outcome is not everything.
