1．溺愛された子、ヨセフ（37:1-11）
ここから新しい内容、ヨセフの物語が始まります。しかし、著者はヨセフの物語をヤコブの歴史として語っています。ヤコブは年老いて、選手交代、次の世代のお話という書き方ではありません。むしろ著者は、神が、ヤコブの一生を通じて「神の祝福のことば」がどう働いたのかを書き記していくのです。
まずヤコブはヨセフを溺愛しました。不思議です。彼は、神に心を専心したヤコブの続きを書くのではなく、全く信仰者としてどんなものか、と思うようなヤコブの姿を描いています。「そでつきの長服」は、七十人訳やヨナタンのタルグムという書物によれば「多彩の上衣」、足首にまで達するほどの長い礼服を意味しました。つまりこれは当時、長子、つまり一族の長となる者に着せられたものです。末息子が長子の扱いを受けていたのです。
父ヤコブの振る舞いに、他の兄弟たちが気分を害していたのも無理はありません。ヤコブは明らかにヨセフを特別扱いにしていました。そして事態は、このようにえこひいきされた末息子ヨセフの無神経さによってますます悪いものとなりました。彼は偏愛の象徴とも言うべき「そでつきの長服」を身にまといながら、兄弟を刺激するような夢を語るのです。4節「彼らを憎み、穏やかに話すことができなかった」とありますが、兄弟たちは、もはや生理的にヨセフを受け入れられないばかりか、その憎しみは、何らかの形で、彼らの行動や振る舞いの端々に出ていたことを意味しています。
ヨセフの見た夢は特別な解釈を要しません。そのままです。ヤコブはヨセフを諫めはしましたが「このことを心に留めていた」のは、単なるえこひいきではなく、自分も夢に取り扱われたことを思っていたからでしょう。神は夢を通してヤコブにお語りになりましたが、今、ヨセフにも同じようにされているのです。神は何か事をなさろうとしている、ヤコブには、心に感ずるものがあったはずです。しかし兄弟たちには、その夢は我慢のならないもの、アベルを殺めたカイン同様に、彼らの怒りもまた爆発しようとしていました。
2．売られたヨセフ（37:12-36）
ある日、ヨセフは父の使いで、兄たちを追いかけてシェケムからドタンへと出かけました。現在テル・ドタンは、約一日の道のりで、今も良い牧草地が広がる場所です。ヨセフを見つけた兄弟は、「あの夢見る者」と呼び、憎しみを募らせました。「あれの夢がどうなるかを見よう」というのは、悪意に満ちたあざけりです。彼らはヨセフの夢を葬り去るかのように、ヨセフを荒野の穴に投げ込みました。ひでりがあっても泉が多いこの地で、穴に水がなかったのは、神の守りです。さらに神はユダに働いて、ヨセフがイシュマエル人、すなわちミディアン人（36節）とも呼ばれる商人の一行の手に引き渡されるようにしました。こうしてヨセフはパロの廷臣で侍従長ポティファルに売られていくのです。
なんとも家族に憎まれ、奴隷として売られる経験は悲惨です。兄弟たちは後に、「あれが、あわれみを求めたとき、その心の苦しみを見ながら、聞き入れなかった」（42:21）と告白していますが、それは、ヨセフの心に深いトラウマを残す、実に冷酷な行為でした。けれども、それは今日私たちの身近などこかでも起こっているものなのかもしれません。ヤコブは家族内でえこひいきをすることで、家族にどのような亀裂が入っているのかに全く無関心な父親でした。かつての自分の父、イサクを全く同じことを彼はしていました。子どもが生まれれば親になるでしょうが、子どもにとって、愛情深い父親になるかどうかは、また別問題です。産みっぱなしの親、子どもを自己満足的に愛する親は昔話ではありません。ヤコブは親としては問題を抱えていたのです。
しかしそのような問題児に、神は目を留め、「神の祝福のことば」を授けたのです。実に不思議です。いや理解に苦しむところです。ヤコブは、風上にもおけない存在です。しかし、後で見ていくように、神はそのヤコブを愛し、ヤコブの心を育てていきます。そこに聖書のメッセージがあるというべきでしょう。神は、非の打ちどころのない、立派な人間を選んで、「神の祝福のことば」を受け継がせようとされるお方ではありません。もし、そうであれば、人間など誰も希望を持つことができません。けれども最も望みなきところに望みを与えるお方が神なのです。神は、人が軽蔑し、蔑み、侮蔑するような者を、ご自身の身内のように扱われ、そして健康な人生へと進ませてくださるお方なのです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
●Genesis 37: Joseph’s Dream, Joseph Sold
- Joseph, the Beloved Child (37:1-11)
From here, a new story begins, the story of Joseph. However, the author tells the story of Joseph as the history of Jacob. Jacob does not grow old, and the story is not about a change of players or the next generation. Rather, the author writes about how God’s “word of blessing” worked throughout Jacob’s life.
First of all, Jacob doted on Joseph. It’s strange. He does not write about Jacob’s devotion to God, but about Jacob’s appearance as a total believer. According to the Septuagint and the Targum of Jonathan, “a long sleeved coat” meant a “many-colored coat,” a long formal garment that reached down to the ankles. In other words, this was what was worn at the time by the firstborn, that is, the head of the family. The youngest son was treated like the firstborn.
It is no wonder that the other brothers were upset by the behavior of their father Jacob. Jacob clearly gave Joseph special treatment. And the situation was made worse by the insensitivity of the youngest son, Joseph, who was given preferential treatment in this way. He was wearing a long-sleeved garment, which could be said to be a symbol of partiality, and he told his brothers a dream that provoked them. Verse 4 says, “They hated them, and could not speak to them peacefully,” which means that not only could the brothers no longer accept Joseph physically, but that their hatred was somehow reflected in their actions and behavior.
The dream that Joseph had does not require any special interpretation. It is as it is. Jacob rebuked Joseph, but “he kept it in his heart” was not just because of favoritism, but because he also remembered that he had been treated in a dream. God spoke to Jacob through a dream, and now He is doing the same to Joseph. Jacob must have had a feeling in his heart that God was going to do something. But his brothers could not bear the dream, and just like Cain who killed Abel, their anger was about to explode. - Joseph Sold (37:12-36)
One day, Joseph was sent by his father to pursue his brothers from Shechem to Dothan. Today, Tel Dothan is about a day’s journey away, and even today, there is good pastureland. When his brothers found Joseph, they called him “the dreamer” and grew to hate him. “Let’s see what happens to his dream” was a malicious mockery. They threw Joseph into a hole in the wilderness as if to bury his dream. It was God’s protection that there was no water in the hole in this land with many springs even though there were droughts. God also worked in Judah to have Joseph handed over to a group of merchants called the Ishmaelites, or Midianites (verse 36). So Joseph was sold to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s court official and chief chamberlain. It was a horrible experience to be hated by one’s own family and sold as a slave. The brothers later confessed, “We saw the bitterness of his heart when he asked for mercy, and we would not listen” (42:21), but it was a cruel act that left a deep trauma in Joseph’s heart. However, it may be something that is happening somewhere around us today. Jacob was a father who was completely indifferent to the rifts that were being caused in his family by playing favorites within the family. He did the same thing to his former father, Isaac. If you have a child, you will become a parent, but whether you will be a loving father to the child is another matter. Parents who just give birth and love their children self-satisfiedly are not a thing of the past. Jacob had problems as a parent.
But God took notice of this problematic child and bestowed upon him the “Word of God’s Blessing.” It is truly mysterious. Or rather, it is difficult to understand. Jacob was a person who could not be put in the wind. However, as we will see later, God loved Jacob and nurtured his heart. That is the message of the Bible. God is not someone who chooses flawless, honorable people to inherit the “Word of God’s Blessing.” If that were the case, no human being would have any hope. However, God is the one who gives hope in the most hopeless places. God is the one who treats those who are despised and scorned by others as his own family and leads them to a healthy life.
