1．ヨセフの物語の位置づけ
38章で見たユダとこの章のヨセフは、イスラエル史においては極めて対照的かつ重要な存在です。ユダについては、兄弟を離れ、信仰的とは言えない世俗的な人生を歩んだエピソードが記録されています。他方ヨセフも兄弟から引き離されますが、彼は、神の御前に誠実に歩んだエピソードが記録されるのです。そして彼はエジプトの大臣にまで抜擢されました。
こうしてアブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの信仰的な伝統を受け継いだのは、ヨセフと思われるところですが、実際には、ユダなのです。イエスの系図につながっていくのは、ヨセフではなくユダです。それなのに著者は、ユダの生涯は1章におさめ、ヨセフの生涯を10章に渡り詳しく取り上げます。しかも、それをヤコブの生涯の一部として取り上げています（37:2）。
ただ著者はヨセフの人生に起こったことを入念に描きながら、ヨセフに重きを置いているわけではないのです。つまり著者の関心は、ヨセフよりも、ヨセフを中心としてヤコブの家族に起こったエピソードにあります。つまり、結論から言えば、それは、アブラハム（12:1-3）、イサク（26:4）、ヤコブ（28:14）に神が繰り返し語られた、「地上のすべての民は、あなたによって祝福される」という神の祝福のことばの意味を、ヤコブの家族に起こった、離散と和解のエピソードを通じて絵画的に解き明かすためでした。
2．ヨセフの幸い
では、そのエピソードを見ていきましょう。まず奴隷として売り飛ばされた、ヨセフはポティファルというエジプトの侍従長の家で仕えることになりました。そこで著者は2節、「主がヨセフとともにおられたので彼は成功する者となった」と語ります。不幸中の幸いと考えたいところです。というのも、十代の若者が、奴隷に売り飛ばされ、帰ることもできない状況で、心遣いがあった程度で、何が幸いなのか、と思う方も少なくないと思うからです。
実際ヨセフは、その後さらに絶望的状況に追い込まれていきます。主人ポティファルの妻の悪だくみによって、奴隷からさらに囚人となってしまうのです。ポティファルの妻は、奇特な夫には釣り合わない好色な女性で、若いヨセフを誘惑しようとしました。しかしヨセフは、主人にも、目に見えない神にも忠実で（8－9節）、その誘惑に屈しようとしないのです。主はヨセフとともにおられたと言いますが、ヨセフ自身も主とともに生きていたのです。
しかし、そのように神に忠実なヨセフの耳に響いたのは、ヨセフを称賛する天使の歌声ではありませんでした。それは、逆恨みしたポティファルの妻の悲鳴であり、ポティファルの誤解と激しい怒りの声でした。しかも彼は自己弁護する機会も与えられていません。せっかく築き上げた小さな成功も、身分も一瞬にして奪われてしまいます。その上、彼は、穏やかに収容されたわけではなく「鉄の足かせ」で囚われていたのです（詩篇105:18）。
またしても無理やり不本意な人生にねじ伏せられていくヨセフでしたが、聖書は同じように繰り返します。「主は彼とともにおられ、主が成功させてくださった」と。（23節）。状況はますます悪くなっている。ただそこで、看守の好意を受ける、囚人の仕事に成功する、これが本当に幸いなことなのか、と思う方もいるのではないでしょうか。私たちにも同じ状況はあると思うのです。何かが根本的に変わって欲しい、解決して欲しい、こんな程度の幸せや慰めではなくて、というような。しかしそれは、私たちの側に、幸せのハードルが高すぎる問題があるということなのかもしれません。小さな幸せや成功をありのままに受け入れられなくなっている問題があるのかもしれません。
なおヨセフの人生はさらに展開していきます。つまりヨセフの新しい未来は、奴隷となり囚人となるいばらの道を必要としていたのです。それは十字架の道が、イエスの復活に不可欠であったのと同じです。
神は、人にただ無駄な人生を歩ませることはなさらないのです。しばしば私たちは、神に、無意味に引きずり回されたと思うことがあるものでしょう。こんな運命に会うなんて、と。しかし、そうではないのです。人生は生き抜いてみなければわからないものです。たとえいばらの道を歩まされたと思うことがあっても、それは将来の栄光のためには、どうしても通らねばならぬ道であったりすることもあるのです。今日も私たちにとって主は最善をなしてくださる、と主を信頼して歩ませていただきましょう。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
●Genesis 39: Joseph’s Trial
- The Position of Joseph’s Story
Judas, who we saw in chapter 38, and Joseph in this chapter are very contrasting and important figures in the history of Israel. Regarding Judah, an episode is recorded in which he left his brothers and lived a secular life that could not be called religious. On the other hand, Joseph was also separated from his brothers, but an episode is recorded in which he walked sincerely before God. He was even promoted to the position of minister in Egypt.
Thus, it is thought that Joseph inherited the religious tradition of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but in fact it was Judah. It is Judah, not Joseph, who is connected to the genealogy of Jesus. Yet the author confines Judah’s life to chapter 1 and covers Joseph’s life in detail over ten chapters. Moreover, he covers it as part of the life of Jacob (37:2).
However, while the author carefully describes what happened in Joseph’s life, he does not place emphasis on Joseph. In other words, the author is not interested in Joseph, but in the episodes that happened in Jacob’s family, centering around Joseph. In other words, to conclude, the purpose was to pictorially explain the meaning of God’s repeated blessings to Abraham (12:1-3), Isaac (26:4), and Jacob (28:14), “All peoples of the earth shall be blessed through you,” through the episodes of separation and reconciliation that happened in Jacob’s family. - Joseph’s Blessing
Let’s take a look at this episode. First, Joseph, who was sold into slavery, ended up serving in the house of Potiphar, the chief chamberlain of Egypt. In verse 2, the author says, “The Lord was with Joseph, and he became successful.” I would like to think of this as a blessing in disguise. Because I think many people would wonder how it was a blessing for a teenager to be sold into slavery and in a situation where he could not return home, to have someone considerate to him.
In fact, Joseph was pushed into an even more desperate situation after that. Joseph went from being a slave to being a prisoner through the evil schemes of his master Potiphar’s wife. Potiphar’s wife was a lustful woman who was no match for her eccentric husband, and she tried to seduce the young Joseph. However, Joseph was faithful to both his master and the invisible God (verses 8-9), and refused to give in to her temptations. It is said that the Lord was with Joseph, but Joseph himself lived with the Lord.
However, what Joseph, who was faithful to God, heard was not the singing voice of angels praising Joseph. It was the screams of Potiphar’s resentful wife, and the voice of Potiphar’s misunderstanding and intense anger. Moreover, he was not given a chance to defend himself. All the small success and status he had worked so hard to build up were taken away in an instant. Moreover, he was not imprisoned peacefully, but with “iron fetters” (Psalm 105:18).
Once again, Joseph was forced into a life he did not want, but the Bible repeats the same thing: “The Lord was with him, and he gave him success” (verse 23). The situation is getting worse. However, some may wonder if receiving the favor of the prison guard and succeeding in the prisoner’s work is really a blessing. I think we are in the same situation. We want something to change fundamentally, to be solved, not just small happiness and comfort. However, it may be that we have a problem on our side where the hurdle of happiness is too high. There may be a problem that makes it difficult to accept small happiness and success as it is.
Joseph’s life continues to unfold. In other words, Joseph’s new future required the thorny path of becoming a slave and a prisoner. Just as the way of the cross was essential for Jesus’ resurrection.
God will not let people live a life that is just a waste. We often feel that God has dragged us around meaninglessly. You may think that we never expected such a fate. But that is not the case. You never know what life is like until you live it. Even if you feel like you are being made to walk a thorny path, it may be a path that you absolutely must take in order to achieve future glory.
