1．反抗的な三つのグループ
まず、モーセとアロンに敵対する三つのグループが登場します。
第一に、コラのグループ。コラは、レビ族のケハテ家系に属しており、天幕の器具を運ぶという重要な任務を担っていました。しかし、彼らは自分の役割に満足していなかったのです。アロンとその家族が祭司職を独占しているのを見て、なぜアロンの家系だけがその特権を持つのかと主張します。コラは、「イスラエルの全会衆が聖なるもの」であるはずなのに、なぜ彼らが上に立つのか、でした。彼らの主張はあたかも平等を求めるように見えましたが、実際には、神が定めた秩序に対する反抗でした。
次に、登場するのがダタン、アビラム、オンを含むルベン族です。ルベンはヤコブの長子であり、モーセはレビ族の出身、つまり「弟分」です。彼らはモーセがイスラエルを支配する立場であることに不満を抱き、「なぜ彼が王のように振舞うのか」と反発しました。彼らの動機は個人的な感情的な問題に根差していました。
最後に、250人の指導者や影響力のある人たちでした。彼らは火皿を持ち、香を献げるという聖職の役割を要求しました。これはレビ族だけが担う神聖な務めでしたが、族長たちはそれを自分たちにも与えるべきだと考えました。彼らの訴えの裏には、名誉職へのあこがれがあったのです。
これら三つのグループは、不満以外に共通点はほとんどありません。彼らの動機や背景は異なっていますが、「モーセとアロンへの反対」という一点で結束していたのです。このように自分が過小評価されているという不満や嫉妬が結びついて対立を生むことがあるのです。
2．神の介入と裁き
さて、ここでモーセは、自分とアロンが選ばれた理由について、理路整然と語り、反撃に出ることもできたでしょう。しかしモーセは一切そのようにはせず、「このことは神に任せましょう」と神の判断を仰ぎました。というのも、モーセにとって彼の地位は、自分で求めて、勝ち取ったものではなかったからです。彼はこの件は「神が答える」と言い、自らを控えたのです。
すると神が、これに応じられました。まず地面が裂け、コラとその家族、財産が地に飲み込まれました。そして、天から火が降り、火皿を持っていた250人の者たちを焼き尽くしました。この出来事は、神が選ばれた役割に従うことの重要性を民に教えるためのものでした。
それは実に劇的で恐ろしい瞬間であり、この問題を決着させるはずの決定的瞬間でした。しかし、反乱はこれで終わらなかったのです。
3．民の反応
翌日、全住民がモーセとアロンに、「あなたがたが神の民を殺した」（41節）と非難しました。反逆は深く根付いていて、神の明確な裁きさえも彼らの心を動かせなかったのです。
その状況に再び神の怒りが燃え上がり、宿営地に疫病が蔓延し、人々が次々といのちを落とし始めたのです。注目しましょう。モーセとアロンは腕を組んで後ろに下がり、「ほら、言ったとおりだろう」と言うのではないのです。アロンが香炉を持って疫病が広がる民の中に入り、生者と死者の間に立って、とりなしを始めたのです。
ここで重要なのは、モーセとアロンが自分を非難した人々のためにいのちを懸けた点です。彼らは自分を非難した人々を救うために、文字通り身を危険にさらすのです。彼らはリーダーシップを、「権力」や「地位」ではなく、「責任」として、また「伴走者」として捉えていました。だからこそ彼らは、民の反抗心に対して、あわれみと祈りをもって行動したのです。この姿勢こそ、リーダーが持つべきものなのでしょう。
5．青銅の火皿：従順の記念碑
神は、焼き尽くされた250人の人たちの火皿を取りあげ、それを祭壇の覆いとするように命じました。これは、祭司ではない者が、神の前で香を焚くことがないように、民に警告する記念碑となりました。それは単なる戒めではなく、神の選びへの従順を促す象徴でもありました。それぞれの役割が、神の大きな計画の一部であることを信じる必要があります。

Numbers 16: Rebellion Against Moses and Aaron, and God’s Judgment
The Israelites had experienced amazing miracles from God after leaving Egypt. But as they faced challenges, they started to lose trust in both God and the leaders He had chosen. This distrust eventually led to a rebellion, splitting their community. Numbers 16 tells the story of a critical test for both Moses and Aaron as leaders, and for the people as they faced spiritual maturity.
- Three Groups of Rebels
In this chapter, three groups of people rose up against Moses and Aaron.
Korah’s group:
Korah was part of the Levites, a tribe given the important task of carrying the sacred objects of the Tabernacle. However, Korah wasn’t happy with his role. He questioned why Aaron and his family held the position of priests and said, “Isn’t the whole congregation holy? Why should they lead?” While Korah’s argument sounded fair, it was really rebellion against God’s authority and order.
Dathan, Abiram, and On (from Reuben’s tribe):
This group had a personal issue with Moses. Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn, while Moses came from Levi, a younger sibling’s tribe. They felt Moses was acting like a king, and they couldn’t accept his leadership.
The 250 leaders:
These were well-known, influential men. They wanted to perform sacred duties like offering incense, something only Levites were allowed to do. Their demand was driven by jealousy and a desire for prestige.
These three groups had different reasons for their complaints, but they united in their opposition to Moses and Aaron. This shows how dissatisfaction and jealousy can quickly lead to division and conflict. - God’s Intervention and Judgment
Moses could have defended himself or fought back. Instead, he stepped aside and said, “Let God decide.” Moses knew his position wasn’t something he took for himself—it was given by God. So, he left the matter in God’s hands.
God’s response was dramatic. The ground opened up and swallowed Korah, his family, and all their belongings. Then, fire from heaven consumed the 250 leaders offering incense. This was a clear message that God expected His people to respect the roles He had assigned.
But the rebellion wasn’t over yet. - The People’s Reaction
The very next day, the entire community blamed Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the Lord’s people!” (Numbers 16:41). Even after witnessing God’s judgment, the people still rebelled. Their distrust ran deep.
Once again, God’s anger burned, and a plague broke out, killing people across the camp. At this moment, Moses and Aaron could have stepped back and said, “We warned you.” But instead, Aaron took his incense burner, ran into the crowd, and stood between the living and the dead, praying for mercy. He risked his own life to save the same people who had accused him. - The Bronze Firepans: A Reminder of Obedience
After the rebellion ended, God told Moses to take the bronze firepans used by the 250 leaders and make them into a covering for the altar. This was to remind the people that only those chosen by God could serve as priests. It was a warning to honor God’s decisions and to remain faithful to their roles.
The bronze covering wasn’t just a punishment—it was a symbol of obedience and humility. It taught the Israelites to trust God’s choices, even when they didn’t fully understand them. - Lessons for Today
Numbers 16 isn’t just a story about rebellion and judgment. It’s a lesson about the dangers of jealousy, the importance of humility, and the weight of leadership. Here’s what we can learn:
Trust God’s calling:
Whatever your role—whether leading or serving—be faithful, and trust that it’s part of God’s bigger plan.
Lead with compassion:
Like Moses and Aaron, true leaders care deeply for others and take responsibility, even in difficult times.
Strive for unity:
Division weakens communities. Shared purpose and trust in God’s plan can bring people together.
