1．バラムの最初の託宣（22:41-23:12）
まず登場するのはモアブの王バラクです。彼は、イスラエルの民が近づいてくることに大きな恐れを抱いていました。ただし、彼の目的は、単にこの脅威をかわすことだけではありません。「未来を書き換えたい」という思いがあったのです。バラクは占い師バラムにイスラエルを呪おうと試みました。
バラムは、当時の中近東の伝統に従い、七つの祭壇を築き、七頭の雄牛と七頭の雄羊を献げました。これは贅沢な儀式で、神の好意を得ようとするものです。しかし、神はこうした人間の儀式には動かされません。むしろ神はバラムにことばを授け、彼が命じられた通りに伝えるようにします。そしてバラムは、バラクのもとに戻り、その通りに語ったのです。
バラムが語った内容は、へブル詩の形式で示されました。この形式の特徴は、最初の行と次の行が平行関係になり、内容を強調することです。「神がのろわない者を私がどうしてのろえようか。主が滅びを宣言されない者に、私がどうして滅びを宣言できようか」（8節）という詩がその例です。
バラムが語ったのは、イスラエルが神に選ばれた特別な民であるということです。彼らは「ヤコブのちり」と呼ばれ、神がアブラハムと結ばれた契約のもと、祝福され増え広がった民なのです。その存在は、神の力と誠実さを証明するものでした。そしてバラム自身はイスラエルの祝福された民の一員となりたいと願ったのです。バラクが期待した呪いのことばは一切語られませんでした。
ここで注目すべき点は、バラムが神の主権を認め、バラクの要望に従わなかったことです。
２．バラムの第二の託宣（23:13-26）
次にバラクは、場所を変えれば異なる結果になるかもしれないと考えます。彼はバラムを別の場所に案内し、再挑戦を試みました。しかし、その場所も、イスラエルの一部しか見えない見晴らしの良い場所でしたが、結果は同じでした。
バラムは再び儀式を行いますが、神から与えられたことばは、バラクにとって意外なものでした。それは、イスラエルに対することばではなく、バラク自身に神の主権を示すものでした。「神は人ではないから、偽りを言うことがない。人の子ではないから、悔いることがない。神が仰せられたら、実行されないだろうか。語られたら、成し遂げられないだろうか。」（19節）
この託宣は、神の計画が揺るぎなく成し遂げられることを強調しています。バラクがどれほど巧妙な計略を練っても、神の祝福を覆すことはできません。むしろ、神は人間の企みを利用してご自身の主権をさらに明らかにされるのです。そして、バラムは、イスラエルの強さが神の臨在に根差していることを改めて示します。この神こそが、イスラエルをエジプトから導き出し、紅海を分け、ファラオの軍隊を滅ぼしたお方なのです。
バラムの預言は未来にも目を向けています。彼は、イスラエルが敵を完全に絶滅する力を持つことを語ります。あなたが望むように未来も変わらない、と。これはダビデがモアブを支配した歴史的な出来事（2サムエル８:2）を示唆しているとされています（24節）。
最後に、このメッセージが私たちに与えるチャレンジを考えましょう。私たちは日常生活の中で、ソーシャルメディアの投稿、政治的な演説など、ことばの力に振り回されることがあります。そして、しばしば批判や拒絶、思いやりのない発言に心を痛めることもあるでしょう。しかし、民数記23章は、私たちにこう教えています。「神が祝福する時に、人間のどんなことばもその祝福を取り消すことはできない」神の主権のもとでは、いかなる力もその計画を妨げることはできない、と。
使徒パウロがローマ書8章37節で語ったように、「私たちを愛してくださった方によって、圧倒的な勝利者です」ということばは、あなたに対する単なる希望ではなく、神の祝福の現実を示しています。神の揺るぎない主権に信頼し、心に安らぎを得ましょう。そして日々の生活を前に進め、主の祝福の中にあることを感謝して歩んでまいりましょう。

Numbers Chapter 23: The Words of Balaam’s Oracles (1st and 2nd)
This chapter helps us think deeply about the power of words. We often believe that words have great power—clever speech and persuasive expressions can move hearts and influence lives. But Numbers 23 teaches us something very important: the true power behind words comes from God, and ultimately, it is His sovereignty that reigns over all.
- Balaam’s First Oracle (22:41–23:12)
First, we meet Balak, the king of Moab. He was deeply afraid as the Israelites moved closer to his territory. But Balak’s goal was not just to escape this threat—he wanted to rewrite the future. To achieve this, he sought the help of Balaam, a prophet, to curse Israel.
Following the traditions of the time, Balaam built seven altars and offered seven bulls and seven rams. This was an extravagant ritual meant to gain God’s favor. But God cannot be moved by human rituals. Instead, God gave Balaam His words and commanded him to speak only what He said.
When Balaam returned to Balak, he delivered God’s message in the form of Hebrew poetry. This poetry often uses parallelism, where one line mirrors the next to emphasize its meaning. For example:
“How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I condemn those whom the Lord has not condemned?” (v. 8)
Balaam declared that Israel is a special nation, chosen by God. They are described as “Jacob’s dust”—a metaphor for their countless numbers, fulfilling God’s promise to Abraham. Israel’s existence testifies to God’s power and faithfulness. Balaam even expressed his desire to be among them, sharing in their blessings.
What Balak expected—a curse—was never spoken. Instead, Balaam recognized and submitted to God’s sovereignty, refusing to follow Balak’s request. - Balaam’s Second Oracle (23:13–26)
Balak, refusing to give up, thought that a change of location might bring a different result. He led Balaam to another spot, but only a part of the Israelite camp could be seen from there. However, the outcome remained the same.
Balaam repeated the ritual, but God’s message this time was directed at Balak himself. It was not a statement about Israel but a revelation of who God is:
“God is not human, that He should lie; not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” (v. 19)
This declaration shows that God’s plans are unshakable. No matter how clever Balak’s schemes might be, God’s blessings cannot be overturned. In fact, God can use human plans to reveal His sovereignty even more powerfully.
Balaam also highlighted that Israel’s strength comes from God’s presence. This is the same God who brought them out of Egypt, parted the Red Sea, and destroyed Pharaoh’s army. Balaam’s prophecy even looked to the future, predicting Israel’s ability to completely overcome their enemies. This points to King David’s later victory over Moab (2 Samuel 8:2).

Finally, let’s consider what this message teaches us. In our daily lives, we often get caught up in the power of words—social media posts, political speeches, and even casual conversations. Sometimes, words of criticism or rejection can deeply wound us.
But Numbers 23 reminds us of this truth: “When God blesses, no human word can undo it.” Under God’s sovereignty, no power can disrupt His plans.
As the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:37, “We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” This is not just wishful thinking—it’s the reality of living under God’s blessing.
