イスラエルの民は、エジプトを出発して約束の地カナンへ向かう旅をしました。本来、徒歩なら約2週間で到達できる距離を、彼らは40年かけて移動しました。これは単なる移動ではありませんでした。神が導いた信仰の訓練の旅だったのです。
- 旅の概要：4つの区間
民数記33章には、彼らの旅の宿営地40か所が記録されています（出エジプト12-17章と民数記10-21章をまとめたものとも言えます）。この旅は、大きく4つの区間に分けて考えることができます。
① エジプト・ゴシェン → 紅海（民数記33:3-8）
② 紅海 → シナイ山（民数記33:8-15）
③ シナイ山 → カデシュ（民数記33:16-36）
④ カデシュ → モアブ（民数記33:37-49）
このうち、シナイ山からカデシュまでのルートは不明確です。古代の地名は、人々が住み続けることで残りますが、荒野の移動民は定住しないため、地名が消失しやすいのです。そのため、聖書の記録と現在の地図を完全に一致させることは難しいのです。 - ゴシェンから紅海へ：奇跡の出発（民数記33:3-8）
民は、エジプトのラメセス（ゴシェン）を出発し、スコテとエタムを経て南東へ進みました。
そして途中で進路を変え、ピ・ハヒロテの前で宿営しました。ここで、紅海の奇跡が起こります。
＊ 神の力によって海が分かれ、民は乾いた地を渡りました（出エジプト記14:21）。
＊ この「海」は、紅海そのものではなく、紅海につながる「苦湖」だった可能性もあります。
民はここで、神の守りと救いを経験しました。しかし、解放されたからといって旅が終わったわけではありませんでした。信仰の試練は、ここから始まるのです。 - 紅海からシナイへ：神の契約の準備（民数記33:8-15）
紅海を渡った後、民はシナイ山へ向かいました。伝統的に、シナイ山はシナイ半島南部のジェベル・ムサとされています。しかし、聖書の記述から別の場所（ジェベル・シン・ビッシャー）が候補として考えられています。
＊ 「エジプトを出てから三日間で到達した」（出エジプト記3:18）。
＊ 民は「魚を食べたい」と不満を言った（民数記11:5）ため、漁業が難しい場所だった可能性がある。
これらを考慮すると、民は伝統的なルート（南へ進んでから北上）ではなく、シナイ半島を東に横断してカデシュへ向かった可能性もあります。
ともあれ、この期間は単なる移動ではなく、「神との契約」を学ぶ時間でした。民はシナイ山で十戒を受け、神の律法を学びました。 - シナイ山からカデシュへ：試練の期間（民数記33:16-36）
さらに次の区間では、イスラエルの民が大きな試練を経験しました。民数記10:33-13:25では、具体的な滞在地が記録されています。例えば、以下の3つの場所です。
＊タブエラ（火による裁き） → 民の不満により神の火が下った。
＊ キブロテ・ハタアワ（不満による災い） → 民が肉を求めた結果、疫病が発生。
＊ ハツェロテ（指導の混乱） → モーセの指導をめぐりミリアムが裁きを受ける。
本章では、さらに22の滞在地が追加で記録されています。申命記1：19で、「あの大きな恐ろしい荒野」と語られているそれらの場所は、イスラエルが38年間荒野をさまよっていた期間に宿営した場所とも考えられます。つまり、民数記33章は、単なる旅の記録ではなく、神を信頼することを学ぶ、「霊的な訓練」の時でもあるのです。 - カデシュからモアブへ：新しい世代への旅（民数記33:37-49）
カデシュを出て、民はホル山で宿営しました。伝統的にこのホル山は、ペトラ近くのジェベル・ハルンと考えられてきましたが、別の位置を推測する説もあります。ここで、モーセの世代の終わりが訪れます。 新しい世代が育ち、霊的な訓練を通じて約束の地へ向かう準備が整いました。40年という時間は、罰ではなく「信仰を鍛える期間」でした。モーセも40年間ミディアンで準備されました（出エジプト2:15-22）。イエスも荒野で40日の試練を受けました（マタイ4:1-2）。多くの人は、この40年間を神の裁きと誤解しています。しかし、それは 「準備の時間」 でした。つまり、
＊ ためらわない次の世代を育てるための時間
＊ 恐れではなく、信仰によって生きる世代を生み出すための時間
＊ 過去を振り返らず、前進するための時間
新しい世代は、エジプトの奴隷経験を知りません。彼らが知っているのは、荒野、律法、奇跡、そして約束の地への希望だけでした。そして、彼らは躊躇することなくカナンへ進んでいきました。 - 私たちへの教訓
私たちの人生にも、本来3年でできることが40年かかることがあります。
しかし、それは決して無駄な時間ではありません。

Numbers 33 – The Journey from Egypt to Canaan
The people of Israel left Egypt and traveled to the Promised Land, Canaan. Normally, this journey could take about two weeks by foot. But they spent 40 years traveling.
This was not just a long trip—it was a journey of faith and training led by God.
- The Journey – Four Main Stages
Numbers 33 lists 40 places where Israel camped during their journey. These can be divided into four major sections:
Egypt to the Red Sea (Numbers 33:3-8)
Red Sea to Mount Sinai (Numbers 33:8-15)
Mount Sinai to Kadesh (Numbers 33:16-36)
Kadesh to Moab (Numbers 33:37-49)
Some locations in this journey are unclear because nomadic groups did not leave permanent settlements. This makes it difficult to match biblical locations exactly with modern maps. - From Egypt to the Red Sea – The Miracle of Departure
The Israelites left Rameses (Goshen), traveling through Succoth and Etham. Then, they changed direction and camped at Pi-Hahiroth, where the Red Sea miracle happened.
God divided the sea, and the Israelites walked across on dry ground (Exodus 14:21).
Some scholars believe this was not the deep Red Sea, but a shallow lake connected to the Red Sea.
Israel experienced God’s protection and salvation here. But their journey was not finished—their faith would be tested from this point on. - From the Red Sea to Mount Sinai – Preparing for God’s Covenant
After crossing the Red Sea, Israel traveled to Mount Sinai. Traditionally, Sinai is believed to be Jebel Musa in southern Sinai Peninsula. However, some scholars suggest Jebel Sin-Bishar as another possible location.
Biblical clues suggest a different route:
“They reached Sinai in three days” (Exodus 3:18).
They complained about missing fish (Numbers 11:5), meaning they were in a place with little access to fishing.
Some scholars believe Israel crossed eastward through Sinai Peninsula toward Kadesh.
More importantly, this was not just travel—it was a time to learn God’s covenant.
They received the Ten Commandments at Sinai.
They learned God’s laws and how to follow Him. - From Mount Sinai to Kadesh – A Time of Testing
This period was full of challenges for Israel. Numbers 10:33-13:25 records several difficult events:
Taberah – The people complained, and God sent fire as judgment.
Kibroth-Hattaavah – The people demanded meat, and a plague spread as punishment.
Hazeroth – Leadership conflicts arose, and Miriam faced judgment.
Numbers 33 adds 22 more camping places, covering 38 years of wandering in the desert.
This journey was not just about movement—it was about learning to trust God. - From Kadesh to Moab – Preparing the New Generation
Israel left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, traditionally believed to be Jebel Harun near Petra. Here, the older generation passed away, and a new generation was ready to enter Canaan.
40 years in the desert was not punishment—it was a time to grow in faith.
Other examples of “40 years” of preparation:
Moses spent 40 years training in Midian (Exodus 2:15-22).
Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-2).
People often see this 40-year period as God’s judgment, but it was actually preparation.
A time to train the next generation
A time to build a generation that lives by faith, not fear
A time to stop looking back and start moving forward
The new generation had never lived as slaves in Egypt. They only knew the wilderness, God’s laws, miracles, and the hope of Canaan.
And they moved forward without hesitation to claim the land. - Lessons for Us
Many times in life, we face delays.
Something that should take 3 years may take 40.
But this time is never wasted.
It is a time to trust God’s guidance.
It is a time to prepare for new challenges.
It is a time to step forward in faith.
Israel struggled, but kept moving forward.
We must also walk by faith, knowing God is leading us.
