23章 成長する王
1．ヤコブの神、イスラエルの神
ダビデの最後のことばには、ダビデが神をどのように仰いだのかがよく語られています。ダビデは神を「ヤコブの神」と呼びました。ヤコブには、ずるがしこいヤコブのイメージがあります。やはり、神にすがる他、生きるすべがない、とする彼の謙虚な思いから、そのように呼んだのでしょう。確かにダビデに必要とされたのは、ヤコブに憐れみを示された神です。そしてまたダビデは、神を「イスラエルの神」と呼びました。ヤコブをイスラエルとして扱ってくださった神への期待があると言えます。
2．神に立てられた王
その神が語られます。王はどのような者であるかと。王は、「義を持って人を治める者」であるし「神を恐れて治める者」です。そのような王は、「太陽が昇る朝の光のようだ」と言います。大切なのは、義しい統治者、神を恐れる統治者のイメージです。国を照らし、命を注ぎ、善政を敷く王のイメージが語られます。まことに、サムエル記の著者は、王たる者、「自分のために」ことを行ってはならないという申命記17章の戒めを、ダビデのことばをもって確認しているのです。サムエル記、列王記は、申命記的歴史と呼ばれるものであり、申命記の戒めを振り返りながら、判を押したようにそれを確認している、わけです。
3．人を成長させる神
大切なのは、戒めはすべて、使徒パウロが言うように養育係として機能したことです（ガラテヤ3：24）。著者はダビデに言わせています「まことに神は、私の救いと願いとを、すべて育んでくださるではないか」（5節）。信仰の成長、いわゆる救いについては、誰もが神の御業として受け止めることでしょう。しかし、ダビデは、私の願いについても神は育て上げてくださると確信していました。願いは、ほぼ無意識レベルのものです。そこが成長しなければ、行動も変わらないでしょう。そして神は、願いをも育て上げてくださる。そしてそれら以外のすべてをも神は育んでくださるという確信。大切なことです。確かに願いも色々。多くは自己中心な願いであったりします。それが育ち、成熟する時に、私たちは、自分にとってもまた他人にとっても、本当に必要なことを願うようになるのです。神が、私たちを養い育ててくださる、日々霊的にも人間的にもあらゆる面で成長させてくださることを覚えるならば、私たちは謙遜になることができます。王として立てられた以上は、王としても神は育ててくださるでしょう。
4．ダビデの勇士たち
さて、ダビデに仕えた勇士たちの名がリストアップされています。彼らに特徴的なのは、自分の働きにまったく身を献げた姿です。アホアハ人ドドの子エルアザルは、「自分の手が疲れて、手が剣にくっつくまでにペリシテ人を討った」（10節）とされます。また、ハラル人アゲの子シャマは、「兵がペリシテ人の前から逃げた時に、彼一人その畑の真ん中に踏みとどまってこれを守り、ペリシテ人を討った」（12節）と言います。大敵を相手に、全力を尽くし、心身尽きるまで戦った勇士が描かれます。やはりこのような箇所を読むならば、思わされるのは自分自身の奉仕のあり様でしょう。教会の困難な闘いにあって、あたふたと去っていく信徒たちがいる中で、教会に留まり、その教会を支えて、これを完成させようとする者であるのか、と自身を探らされるところです。
現実は、戦いを避けているのみならず、教会にも、神にも無関心ということもあったりするものでしょう。ずいぶん久しく、聖書に向かい、聖書のことばに取り扱われ、自らの内面を見つめ、自らの成長を祈ることから遠ざかっていることはないでしょうか。自らの霊的な成長のために祈りにおいて格闘することもない、また他の人々のとりなしに心を配ることもない、そんなことがあるのではないでしょうか。
一人一人に、信仰の戦いがあるものです。神の側につく、教会を建てあげることについての霊的な戦いのないクリスチャン生活はありえません。しかし、霊的な戦いのないクリスチャン生活を送ることができますし、そのようにしてしまうことがあるものでしょう。礼拝すること、祈ること、十一献金をささげること、証しすること、賛美すること、教会を守ること、それらと何かがかち合う時にいつもはどう行動しているのでしょうか。私たちはいったい何に踏みとどまり、何と戦い、どのような勝利を得ようとしているのでしょうか。イエスが黙示録で教会のあり様について、種々語られたように、私たち自身の霊的なあり様について見直してみたいものです。そして私たちも神の勇士の名簿に加えられてまいりたいものです。

Chapter 23: The Growing King
1.God of Jacob, God of Israel
The last word of David often talks about how David looked to God. David called God “the God of Jacob.” Jacob has the image of a sly Jacob. He probably called it that way because of his humble feeling that he had no choice but to live by God. Indeed, what David needed was God, who showed mercy to Jacob. And again, David called God “God of Israel.” It can be said that there are expectations for God who treated Jacob as Israel.
2．King erected by God
The God is spoken. What kind of person is the king? A king is “a person who reigns with righteousness” and “a person who reigns in fear of God.” Such a king says, “It’s like the morning light of the rising sun.” What is important is the image of a righteous ruler, a ruler who fears God. The image of a king who illuminates the country, devotes his life, and lays good politics is told. Indeed, the author of the book of Samuel confirms in David’s words the commandment of Deuteronomy 17, the King, that he must not do “for himself.” The books of Samuel and Kings are called Deuteronomy history, and while looking back on the commandments of Deuteronomy, they confirm it as if without a single exception.
3.God to grow people
The important thing is that all the commandments acted as caretakers, as the apostle Paul said (Galatians 3:24). The author tells David, “Isn’t God really nurturing all my salvation and desire?” (Ver. 5). Everyone will take the growth of faith, the so-called salvation, as the work of God. But David was convinced that God would raise my desire as well. Desire is almost unconscious. If it doesn’t grow, the behavior will not change. And God also raises desire. And the conviction that God will nurture everything else. It’s important. Certainly, there are various desire. Many are selfish ones. As it grows and matures, we want what we really need, both for ourselves and for others. We can be humble if we remember that God nourishes us and grows us spiritually and humanly every day. As long as you are a king, God will raise you as a king.
4. David’s heroes
By the way, the names of the heroes who served David are listed. What is characteristic of them is that they are completely devoted to their work. Eleazar, the son of Dodai the Ahohite is said to have “struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword.” (ver.10). Shammah, the son of the Agee the Hararite, says, “When Israel’s troops fled from them, he took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down (ver. 12). A hero who fought to the fullest with all his might against a great enemy is drawn. If you read such a passage, you may think of your own service. In the difficult struggle of the church, there are believers who are leaving with a lid, and they are wondering if they are the ones who stay in the church, support the church, and try to complete it.
The reality is that not only are we avoiding battles, but we are also indifferent to the church and to God. Haven’t you been away from going to the Bible, being treated by the words of the Bible, looking inside yourself, and praying for your own growth for a long time? Perhaps there are times when we do not wrestle in prayer for our own spiritual growth, nor do we care for the intercession of others.
Each person has a battle of faith. There can be no Christian life without a spiritual battle to build a church on God’s side. However, you can and may end up living a Christian life without spiritual warfare. Worshiping, praying, offering tithe, witnessing, praising, protecting the church, how do you always behave when something conflicts with them? What are we going to stay on, what are we fighting, and what kind of victory are we trying to win? As Jesus said in the apocalypse about the state of the church, we would like to review our own spiritual state. And we also want to be added to the list of heroes of God.
