1．宣教者ヨナ
神の前に悔い改め、神に海の深みから、大きな魚の腹の中から救い出され、陸地に戻ったヨナは、神の命令に従って、異邦人の地ニネベへ向かいました。ヨナがどの海岸に吐き出されたのか、よくわかってはいません。しかし、たとえばイスラエルのヤッファの港からニネベまでの距離は約1300キロです。だいたい東京から出発して鹿児島まで行く距離となります。当時は、ほとんど徒歩の旅です。そして当時の人は、一日約30キロ歩いたと言われますから、到着までに約一か月半かかったことでしょう。魚の胃酸にその全身の皮膚が溶かされていたとすれば、その途上で、回復する部分もあったとは思いますが、ヨナの外観は、皮膚がただれたおぞましい姿になっていたのではないでしょうか。ヨナが、「地のかんぬき」（6節）を打ち破って生還したこと、それ自体が人々の耳目を集めることになったと思いますが、それは、神に逆らった結果であるというメッセージは、人々の心を掴まざるを得なかったことでしょう。そして、ニネベに対する神の裁きを語るヨナのことばは、人々に真剣な応答を迫ることになったと言えます。
ニネベは、現在のイラク北部にある中心都市モスルの近郊、クユンジクのことではないかと考えられており、その遺跡がのこっています。現代は実に便利な時代で、グーグルマップで、その場所も、その遺跡も確認できますので、ぜひ見てください（https://bit.ly/37xNW1X）。ともあれ、BC700年のセンナケリブの時代には、その町の広さは700ヘクタール、東京ドームが約150個入る大きさであったとされます。ヨナの時代は、町がその大きさに向けてどんどん拡張していた時代であったと思われますが、彼は、４節「まず一日分の道のりを歩きまわった」というように、この町をくまなく歩きまわったわけです。神を恐れ、靴底を減らしながら、ヨナは、神のことばを忠実に語り伝えたのです。すると、このヨナの働きによって町中の人々が悔い改めたと言います。そして神は、ニネベに下そうと考えていた災いを思い直されました。
2．災いを思い直された神
神は、ご自分に逆らって窮地に陥ったヨナが、悔い改めて、助けを求めた時に、その滅びの穴からヨナを救い出されました。神はあわれみ深いお方です。人は自ら人生を台無しにしてしまうようなことがあるものです。しかし、それでおしまいだと思わないことです。神は、いつでも、悔い改め神の助けを求める者には、哀れみ深く、救い出し、新たなチャンスを与えられるのです。
それは、まことの神を知らず、神を信じないニネベの人々にも同様でした。私はキリスト教信仰を信じていない、だから私は神に愛されていない、そうではないのです。人は皆神によって造られた者、神に愛されている者です。だから神はニネベの人々にも、正しい人生を歩んでほしいと思っているし、ヨナの言葉を信じて、悔い改めたニネベの人々に対しても、思い直して、災いを下されなかったのです（10節）。神は、キリスト者だけの神ではありません。キリストを信じなければ、よきにしてくださらないという方ではありません。大切なことは、そのような神の存在を認めて、そのまことの神と共に生きようと決心をすることでしょう。
使徒ペテロも、新約聖書の中で、神は「だれも滅びることがなく、すべての人が悔い改めに進むことを望んでおられるのです」（2ペテロ3:9）と語っています。また、使徒パウロも同様に「神は、すべての人が救われて、真理を知るようになることを望んでおられます」（1テモテ2:4）と語っています。イエス・キリストの恵みは、万人に与えられるものです。今日この神を信じ、この神と共に生きる決意をさせていただきましょう。では今日も良き一日であるように祈ります。

Chapter 3: God Responds to Repentance
1. missionary Jonah
After repenting before God and being delivered by Him from the depths of the sea and from the belly of a great fish, Jonah returned to land and went to Nineveh, the land of the Gentiles, according to God’s command. It is not well known to which coast Jonah was spit out. However, for example, the distance from the port of Jaffa in Israel to Nineveh is about 1,300 km. This is roughly the distance from Tokyo to Kagoshima. In those days, it was mostly a journey on foot. And since it is said that people at that time walked about 30 kilometers a day, it would have taken about a month and a half to arrive at Nineveh. If the stomach acid from the fish had dissolved the skin of Jonah’s body, some of his skin would have recovered, but his appearance would have been horrific, with sores all over his body. The fact that Jonah defeated the “canker of the earth” (v. 6) and returned to life must have caught people’s attention, but the message that this was the result of his defiance of God must have grabbed their attention. And Jonah’s words about God’s judgment on Nineveh would have forced a serious response from the people.
Nineveh is thought to be the city of Kuyunjik, a suburb of the central city of Mosul in what is now northern Iraq, and ruins of the city can still be found. In this day and age of convenience, you can see the location and its ruins on Google Maps (https://bit.ly/37xNW1X). At any rate, during the reign of Sennacherib in 700 BC, the town was 700 hectares in size, or about the size of 150 Tokyo domes. Jonah’s time must have been a time when the city was expanding rapidly toward that size, and he walked all over it, as verse 4 says, “First he walked all the way for a day. Fearing God and reducing the soles of his shoes, Jonah faithfully preached the Word of God. The whole town repented because of Jonah’s work. God then reconsidered the plagues he had planned to inflict on Nineveh.
2. God Reconsidering the Plagues
God delivered Jonah from the pit of destruction when he repented and asked for help. God is merciful. There are times when people ruin their own lives. But don’t think that is the end of it. God is always merciful to those who repent and seek His help, delivering them and giving them a new chance.
So it was with the people of Nineveh who did not know the true God and did not believe in Him. I do not believe in the Christian faith, therefore I am not loved by God, it is not so. We are all created by God and loved by God. That is why God wants the people of Nineveh to live righteous lives, and He did not send plagues on the people of Nineveh who believed Jonah’s words and repented, on second thoughts (v. 10). God is not the God of Christians alone. He is not a God who says, “If you do not believe in Christ, He will not make you good. The important thing is to recognize the existence of such a God and make a decision to live with Him.
The apostle Peter also said in the New Testament that God “wants no one to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). The apostle Paul likewise said, “God wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). The grace of Jesus Christ is available to all. Let us believe in this God today and resolve to live with Him. I pray that you have a good day today.
