4章　エリシャの奇跡

1．預言者たちの生活への配慮

当時、預言者は、社会の中で十分かつ正当な関心をもって取り扱われていなかったようです。神のみわざのために労して使命を全うした預言者の家族が、生活苦に陥っていました。しかしそれは旧約時代だけのお話ではありません。新約聖書の中で、使徒パウロは、教会が牧師たちの生活に配慮するべきことを語っていますが（ガラテヤ6:6）、それはそう言わねばならない事情があったからこそでしょう。さらに、今日の日本の教会にも同じような事情があります。牧師の生活を考え、支えることができている教会もあれば、牧師がアルバイトで自分の生活を支え、働きを継続しているような教会もあります。多額の寄付金で世間を騒がすようなお話とは無縁の教会というのは、いくらでもあるのです。牧師と牧師の家族の生活を教会が考える、これは重要なことです。しかししばしば教会には、資力がないという現実問題があったりします。そこで、神の人エリシャが、神の力によって彼らの生活を救済したことに注目しましょう。神を恐れ、神に仕える者の生活は、神の力によって養われるべきものです。ある意味で、湧き出る油は、天来のマナと同じです。神は、神のために忠実に働く者に不思議な方法で配慮してくださいます。ですから、まず教会が集まって、多く祈る事柄の中に、牧師とその家族の生活のことも含めて、心を合わせて祈りあうことが大切なのです。

2．シュネムの女の心遣い

続くシュネムの女の話も、働き人に配慮を示した人のお話です。シュネムは、イッサカル部族の相続地にある町でした。現在、それはモレの丘の南西山麓にあるソレムであると考えられています。彼女は裕福な女で、エリシャを神の人として尊敬していました。そしていつもこの町を通るエリシャが休める部屋を用意したのです。彼女は、自分に与えられている多くのものを正しく用いる人でした。そして、神の働きのためにすべてを投げ打ったエリシャの働きを支えたのです。

エリシャも心遣いのある人でした。彼は感謝の気持ちから、彼女に願いがあるならばそれをかなえたいと考えた。これほどよくしてくれるのには訳があろうと考えたのでしょう。しかし、そうではありませんでした。彼女は全く無欲な女性で、純粋にエリシャを支援していたのです。ところが、余計な配慮と言うべきでしょうか。子がいない彼女の事情を察したエリシャは、彼女のために子が授かるように祈り、シュネムの女には子が与えられたのです。しかしそれは束の間の幸いで、ある日、その子は突然死んでしまうのです。

3.試練を乗り越えるシュネムの女

シュネムの女も、おそらくエリシャは、何とも余計なことをしれくてたものだ、という気持ちになったのでしょう（28節）。しかし、彼女は、余計なことをしたエリシャに神の力があることを信じていた人でした。彼女はエリシャに訴え、エリシャは神に訴えて、子のいのちは取り戻されたのです。

人生には人の善意が、逆の効果をもたらすことがあるものです。しかし人生何が起ころうとも一々慌てないことです。神を信じるということはそういうことでしょう。

4．飢饉を乗り越える神の助け

最後のエピソードは、イエスが行った二匹の魚と五つのパンの奇跡を思い起こさせるエピソードです。列王記の著者は、淡々とエリシャの奇跡物語を記録していますが、これらのエピソードは、エリシャがいかに力ある神の人であったかを語るものではなく、神が神を恐れる者たちを助けてくださったことを示しているものです。焦点は、エリシャではなく、配慮される神です。祈りの人と呼ばれたジョージ・ミュラーは、神の助けによって孤児院を建設しようとした際に、「主よ。もし、あなたにもう一つの孤児の家を開設する必要がないのでしたら、わたしにも、その必要はございません。」と祈ったと言います。

神は私たちの思いを越えた働きをしてくださいます。しかしそれは神の主権による行為です。祈れば何でも神は聞いてくれるというのではなくて、神の働きに完全に献身している者を神は守られる、という当たり前のことを言っているに過ぎません。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 4 Elisha’s Miracle

1. Care for the lives of the prophets

It seems that the Prophet was not treated with sufficient and justifiable interest in society at that time. The family of the Prophet, who had worked hard for the work of God to complete his mission, was in a difficult situation. But it’s not just about the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul says that the church should take care of the lives of pastors (Galatians 6:6). Furthermore, there is a similar situation in the Japanese churches today. There are churches that consider and support the life of the pastor, while there are other churches where the pastor works part-time to support his life and continue his ministry. There are many churches that are free from the sensational stories of large donations. It is important that the church considers the life of the pastor and pastor’s family. But often the church has the real problem of not having the resources. So let us note that Elisha the man of God saved their lives by the power of God. The lives of those who fear and serve God should be fed by the power of God. In a way, the oil that springs up is the same as divine manna. God cares in a strange way for those who work faithfully for Him. Therefore, it is important for the church to gather together and pray together, including the life of the pastor and his family, among the many things to pray for.

2. Care of the Shunem Woman

The story of the Shunem woman that follows is also the story of a person who showed consideration for the workers. Shunem was a town in the inheritance of the Issachar tribe. It is now believed to be Solem, at the southwest foothills of Moreh Hill. She was a wealthy woman who looked up to Elisha as a man of God. And he prepared a room for Elisha, who always passed through this town, to rest. She was a righteous use of the many things she was given. And she supported the work of Elisha, who gave up everything for the work of God.

“Elisha was also a caring person.” Out of her gratitude, he thought that if she had a wish, he would grant it. He must have thought there was a reason why he was so nice to me. But it wasn’t. She was a completely selfless woman and she was genuinely helping Elisha. However, should we say that it is an extra consideration? Sensing that she had no child, Elisha prayed for her to have a child, and a child was given to the woman of Shunem. However, it was a short-lived happiness, and one day the child suddenly died.

3. The woman of Shunem overcomes the ordeal

The woman of Shunem must have felt that Elisha had done something unnecessary (ver. 28). However, she was a person who believed that Elisha, who did extra things, had the power of God. She appealed to Elisha, and Elisha appealed to God, and her child’s life was restored.

In life, people’s good intentions can have the opposite effect. But no matter what happens in life, don’t panic. That’s what it means to believe in God.

3. God’s help over famine

The last episode is an episode that reminds us of Jesus’ miracle of the two fish and the five loaves of bread. The author of the Book of Kings casually records Elisha’s miraculous stories, but these episodes do not tell how Elisha was a mighty man of God, but rather how God helped those who feared God. It shows that God has given you so much. The focus is on God being taken care of, not on Elisha. George Muller, called the Man of Prayer, when he was about to build an orphanage with God’s help, said, “Lord, if you don’t need to open another orphanage, I don’t have to do that,” he prayed.

God works beyond our imagination. But it is an act of God’s sovereignty. I’m not saying that if you pray, God will hear you, but that God will protect those who are completely devoted to His work. I hope you have a good day today.
