3章 主の目に小さなこと
1．ヨラムのエドム討伐
アハブの子ヨラム王のエピソードが挿入されます。これは、1:17-18の続きです。アハブの死後、アハズヤが王となりましたが、彼は病気となったためにモアブの独立運動を阻止することができませんでした。そこで、代わって王となった弟のヨラムが、モアブの独立を阻止しようと動き出すのです。
モアブは、イスラエルに毎年子羊10万頭、雄羊10万頭分の羊毛を貢物として納めていたので（2列王3:4）、それは、イスラエルの国が権益を失う一大事でした。ヨラムは、ユダ、エドムの連合軍を結成してモアブ討伐に出かけます。そこで、どこから攻めていくのか、彼らは、作戦を練るのです（8節）。そして、「エドムの荒野の道」つまり、死海の南端を迂回し、南側からモアブの首都キル・ハレセテに攻め込む道を選びました。それは、遠回りの道で、目的地に到着するまで七日を要しました。他にエドムに入るには、死海の北側を回り、ヨルダン川を渡る逆周りの道もあります。実はそちらが最短でした。しかしその道は、地形的に急な斜面が多く戦車隊が通るには難しかったのでしょう。
ともあれ彼らはわざわざ遠回りをしたので、水が不足し、軍隊そのものを維持し得ない状況になったのです。彼らは戦う前から、負けを予測しなくてはならない事態に陥りました（10、13節）。しかし、信仰の人ヨシャファテは、この窮地でどう行動すべきか知っていました。彼は主の御心を求めることのできる預言者を探します。そして、主の預言者エリシャのことばを求めに出かけるのです。実に、聖書は、イスラエルの歴史を記述しているようでありながら、それ以上の意図を持っています。本章もまた、神が立てた預言者を通して、神の存在を知らせることにその意図があるのです。
2．エリシャが示す神
神を信じる者は、明らかに敗北であるような事態に陥っても、決して簡単にあきらめることはありません。そのような人は、まずは神のみこころを聞く姿勢を持ち、神のもとに駆け込むことを知っています。しかしその姿勢は一朝一夕で身につくものではありません。困った時の神頼みとは言いますが、本当に困った時に、神に寄り頼んで、神のことばに耳を傾け、神の助けを待ち望む者は、意外にも少なかったりするものです。実際には、後ろ向きになって、神を信じるどころか呪ってしまうことがあるものです。実際一緒にいたヨラム王は、すっかり物事をあきらめ、神に向かう心すらありません。窮地に立たされて神を求める人とそうではない人がいるのです。
今日、私たちが心に留めたいのは、18節のことば。「これは主の目には小さなことです」。雨も風もない状況で荒野に水があふれることは、考えられないことですが、それは主の目には極子細なことなのです。私たちにとってはどんな無理難題であっても、主の目には小さなことである、という信仰を持つ、これが信仰を持つということでしょう。
25節、もはや負け戦をしなければならないのか、と思っていたところが、実際には、キル・ハレセテ、つまりモアブの首都を攻略する大勝利となるのです。
27節「イスラエル人に対する激しい怒りが起こった」とあります。モアブが敗北し、面目を失った民族神ケモシュを宥めるために、後継者の王子を城壁の上で人身御供（ひとみごくう）とした異常な事態が生じました。それはモアブ人のなりふり構わぬ、怒りに満ちた反撃を引き起こし、イスラエルの勝利は決定的であったにもかかわらず、イスラエルは狼狽して撤退していったということです。聖書ではイスラエルが勝ったとされているのに、聖書外資料のメシャ碑文には、この戦いをモアブの勝利と記録しているのは、こうした事情によるものなのでしょう。
ともあれ、今日覚えるべきことばは、「それは主の目には小さなことです」神の目を持って物事を見て、信仰によって踏み出す者でありましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 3 Small things in the eyes of the Lord
- Joram’s Slaying of Edom
The episode of King Yoram, son of Ahab, is inserted. This is a continuation of 1:17-18. After Ahab’s death, Ahaziah became king, but he was unable to stop Moab’s independence movement because of his illness. So, his younger brother Joram, who became king in his stead, started moving to prevent Moab’s independence.
Moab was giving Israel 100,000 lambs and 100,000 rams of wool each year (2 Kings 3:4), so it was a big deal for the nation of Israel to lose its rights. Jehoram formed a combined army of Judah and Edom to attack Moab. So, where to attack from, they work out a strategy (verse 8). They chose the Wilderness Road of Edom, a route that bypassed the southern tip of the Dead Sea and attacked Kir Hareseth, the capital of Moab, from the south. It was a circuitous road and took seven days to reach its destination. Another way to enter Edom is to go in reverse, around the north side of the Dead Sea and across the Jordan River. They were actually the shortest. However, it must have been difficult for the horse and chariot corps to pass through because of the many steep slopes on that road.
In any case, they took the long way around, so they ran out of water and ended up in a situation where the army itself could not be maintained. They had to anticipate defeat even before they fought (vv. 10, 13). But Jehoshaphat, a man of faith, knew what to do in this predicament. He seeks a prophet who can ask the will of the Lord. And he goes out to seek the words of Elisha, the prophet of the Lord. Indeed, while the Bible seems to describe the history of Israel, it goes far beyond that. This chapter also has the intention of making known the existence of God through the prophets whom God has set up.

Those who believe in God never give up easily, even when they find themselves in a situation of obvious defeat. Such people know that they will first have the attitude of listening to God’s will and rush to God. But that attitude doesn’t come overnight. It’s called relying on God when you’re in trouble, but surprisingly few people rely on God, listen to God’s words, and wait for God’s help when they’re really in trouble. In fact, sometimes we turn backwards and curse God instead of believing in him. King Joram, who was actually with him, had completely given up on things and had no heart to turn to God. There are those who are in a predicament and seek God, and those who are not.
What we want to keep in mind today is the words of verse 18. “This is a small thing in the eyes of the Lord.” It is inconceivable that the wilderness should be flooded in the absence of rain and wind, but it is a very small matter in the eyes of the Lord. Having faith that no matter how difficult it may be for us, it is a small thing in the eyes of the Lord.
In verse 25, I thought that I had to fight a losing battle, but in reality it was a great victory to capture Kir Hareseth, the capital of Moab.
Verse 27 says, “There was a great anger against the Israelites.” In order to appease the disgraced folk god Chemosh after the defeat of Moab, an extraordinary situation occurred in which his heir prince was made a human sacrifice on the walls. It provoked an angry counterattack from the Moabites, and even though Israel’s victory was decisive, Israel retreated in dismay. This is probably the reason why the non-biblical source, the Mesha inscription, records this battle as a victory for Moab, even though the Bible says that Israel won.
In any case, the words to remember today are, “It’s a small thing in the eyes of the Lord.” Let’s be those who look at things with God’s eyes and step forward with faith. I hope you have a good day today.
