2章 エリヤからエリシャへ
- エリヤの最期
神はエリヤを天に引き上げようとされました。創世記に、「エノクは神とともに歩んだ。神が彼を取られたので、彼はいなくなった」（5:24）とあります。エリヤの最期もよく似ています。誰でも人は、自分がどのような最期を迎えるのかなど、全く予測できないことでしょう。しかし、もし「神が彼を取られたので、彼はいなくなった」と周囲の人々によって讃嘆されるような最期を飾ることができたら、それは幸いです。聖書が語るように、確かに神と神の国の存在を明らかにし、この人はそこへ戻って行ったのだ、と言われるような一生を生きることができたら、それ自体価値あるものです。神を信じるクリスチャン以外、誰がそのような人生を送ることができるでしょうか。
2．別れの旅
自分の人生の終わりを予感したエリヤは、神と共に同業者を訪ねようとします。それは、一般的な言い方で言えば、人生と仕事の整理をしていくようなものであったことでしょう。エリシャは、エリヤのその旅に強引に同行します。エリシャはヨルダン渓谷アベル・メホラの出身です。家は裕福な農家でしたが、その生活と仕事を捨て去り、エリヤの弟子となった人でした。エリシャは、自分の主人が天に凱旋するのを見届けるのみならず、後継者とさせられたものの、力不足を覚える必死さがあったのでしょう。ベテル、エリコへと進むエリヤにくっついていくのです。
ベテル、エリコ、いずれもイスラエル人にとって思い出の深い地です。ベテルでは、アブラハムとヤコブが祭壇を築き、契約を結んでいます。神の祝福の契約に信頼を寄せた場所です。エリコは約束の地カナンでの初戦の地。難攻不落の城壁は信仰による戦いで崩すことができました。イスラエル人にとってヨルダン川は、古い時代への決別であり、新しい時代の始まりを象徴する川です。信仰によってイスラエルはヨルダン川を渡ったのです。実際のところこの旅は、エリヤのためではなく、エリシャのためになるものでした。つまり、イスラエルの歴史を踏み進みゆくことで、神の後継者として立っていく歩みは、神の祝福を信頼し、これを積極的に受け止め、求めていく歩み以外のなにものでもないことを教えられているのです。
別れの時、エリヤはエリシャを振り向き「何をして欲しいのか」と問いました。彼は即座に、エリヤの二倍の霊の力を求めています。イスラエルには、相続権のある長子は二倍の分け前を得る定めがあります（申命21:17）。つまり、エリシャは、恩師に勝ろうと野心を抱いたわけではなく、エリヤの正統な後継者であることを求めたわけです。ですから後継者として力不足を覚えるのなら、それは、神に求め、信頼することが全てだ、とエリヤはエリシャを諭しているわけです。
3．後継者エリシャ
ですからエリヤはどんな確かな約束もせず、去って行く。神の祝福は、人間の好意、ましてひいきとは関係のないものです。働きに召してくださるのは神であり、必要な力は神ご自身が与えてくださるのです。エリヤではなく、神に求めことでした。
エリシャがひとり神に向かい、自身の召しを確かめようとするシーンが描かれます。エリシャはエリヤと同じように外套をヨルダン川の水に打ちつけました。そして水は別れたとあります。神は確かにエリシャにエリヤと同じ信仰の力をお与えになったのです。大切な点です。彼は神の力を知らされ、それらが働くことを聞き知っていただけではありません。自らその力を体験する者となったのです。その後、エリコ（水のきよめ）の事件、ベテル（熊）の事件と、エリシャがエリヤの正統な後継者として認められる出来事が続くのです。
大切なのは、人は、聖書が語ることを知っているだけではなく、聖書の力を実際に味わうことでしょう。そのためには、ヤコブが神の祝福に縋りついたように、ヨシュアが神に信頼し神の祝福を勝ち取ったように、そしてエリシャが、エリヤを離れようとせず、付きまとってその実を得たように、神の衣の裾に触れる必死さが重要です。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 2 From Elijah to Elisha
- The end of Elijah
God tried to raise Elijah to heaven. Genesis says, “Enoch walked with God. He was gone because God took him” (5:24). The end of Elijah is very similar. No one can predict what the end will be. But it would be great if we could end up being praised by those around us, saying, “He’s gone because God took him.” As the Bible says, it would be valuable in itself if we could live a life that would certainly reveal the existence of God and the kingdom of God and say that he had returned to there. Who can live such a life other than a Christian who believes in God?
- Farewell trip
Foreseeing the end of his life, Elijah tries to visit his peers with God. In general terms, it was like organizing life and work. Elisha forcibly accompanies Elijah on that journey. Elisha is from the Jordan Valley Abel Mehora. He was a wealthy farmer at home, but he abandoned his life and work and became a disciple of Elijah. Elisha would not only see his master triumphantly return to heaven, but would have been desperate to remember his lack of power, although he was made to succeed him. He sticks to Elijah, who goes to Bethel and Jericho.
Bethel and Jericho are both memorable places for Israelis. In Bethel, Abraham and Jacob have built an altar and signed a covenant. A place of trust in the covenant of God’s blessings. Jericho is the place of the first match in the promised land of Canaan. The impregnable walls could be destroyed in a battle of faith. For the Israelites, the Jordan River is a break from the old era and a symbol of the beginning of a new era. By faith Israel crossed the Jordan River. In fact, this trip was not for Elijah, but for Elisha. In other words, by stepping through the history of Israel, the step of standing as God’s successor is nothing more than a step of trusting in God’s blessing, actively accepting it, and seeking it. It is being taught.
At the time of farewell, Elijah turned to Elisha and asked, “What do you want me to do?” He immediately seeks twice as much spiritual power as Elijah. Israel has a provision that the firstborn with inheritance will receive a double share (Deuteronomy 21:17). In short, Elisha did not have the ambition to beat his teacher, but wanted to be Elijah’s legitimate successor. So Elijah reminds Elisha that if you feel weak as a successor, it’s all about asking and trusting God.
- Successor Elisha
So Elijah leaves without any definite promise. God’s blessing has nothing to do with human favor, much less patronage. It is God who calls for work, and God himself gives the necessary power. It was to ask God, not Elijah.
A scene is depicted in which Elisha heads alone to God and tries to confirm his own calling. Elisha, like Elijah, struck his cloak into the waters of the Jordan River. And it is said that the water broke up. God certainly gave Elisha the same power of faith as Elijah. This is an important point. He was informed of the power of God and not only heard that they worked. He became a person who experienced the power himself. This is followed by the case of Jericho (cleansing of water), the case of Bethel (bear), and the events in which Elisha is recognized as the legitimate successor of Elijah.
The important thing is that people not only know what the Bible says, but also actually experience the power of the Bible. To that end, just as Jacob clung to God’s blessing, as Joshua trusted in God and won God’s blessing, and as Elisha did not leave Elijah, but escorted him to fruition. Desperateness to touch the hem of God’s robe is important. I pray for a good day today.
