９章 メフィボシェテに施された恵み
1．ヨナタンとの約束を守るダビデ
王としての地位が確立した後、ダビデは、ヨナタンとの約束を思い起しました（1サムエル20:15）。そして、彼は、ヨナタンの子孫にその約束を果たそうと考えます。彼は、ヨナタンとの約束を忘れていなかったのです。確かに、ヨナタンあってこその今があったのです。

2．ヨナタンの功績によるメフィボシェテの幸せ
この物語は一つの霊的な教訓を語り伝えています。人は、自分の人生を正直に振り返るなら、自分が神に与えられた賜物を無駄にし、あらゆる浪費を重ね、さらには神に敵対的にすらなって歩んでいたと思わされることはあるものでしょう。そのようなバツ印しか付けられないような人生に、人は、これから先どんな神の祝福があるというのか、そう思うことはあるものです。そこで、ダビデがメフィボシェテに語った言葉に注目しましょう。「恐れることはない。私はあなたの父ヨナタンのゆえに、あなたに恵みを施そう。あなたの祖父サウルの地所をすべてあなたに返そう。あなたはいつも私の食卓で食事をすることになる」メフィボシェテが幸せを得たのは、父ヨナタンとダビデとの、彼が知らぬ関係の故です。同じように、私たちが神にあって幸せになるとしたら、それは、私たちの人徳や何らかの功績によるものではありません。まさに神とイエス・キリストとの関係のためなのです。ですから自分が、メフィボシェテのように自分を「死んだ犬のような私」と思うことがあっても、神がイエスの故に申し出ておられる祝福を、あなたは決して拒んではならないのです。神があなたを祝福されるのは、今のあなたがどうであるということとは関係のないことだからです。
3．メフィボシェテの恵み
メフィボシェテがダビデの招きを受け入れた時に、彼は、ダビデの子として扱われ、王の食卓で食事をするようになりました。それまでは陰でひっそり暮らす者でしたが、彼は、本来継ぐべき祖父の地所、そして、王族としての地位を回復することになりました。しかも、抜け目のないサウルのしもべツィバは、彼のために働くことを命じられるのです。
メフィボシェテは足が不自由なままでしたが、ダビデの召しに応じた後の人生はまったく異なるものでした。そして彼は実感したはずです。自分のこの幸せは、まったくもって父ヨナタンによるものである、と。そしてその申し出を受け入れたためである、と。同じように、神の召しに応じるなら、キリストによる恵みが豊かに注がれるのです。あなたの力や能力、人格とは関係のないものとして。イエス・キリストが私たちの身代わりとなって十字架にかかり、神の怒りのすべてを受け止め、黄泉にまで下ってくださったが故に、私たちは、神の怒りではない神の恵みを受けるのです。もしあなたが神の恵みにふさわしくないと思うのであればあるほど、神の恵みに招かれていることを疑わずに、素直に神のことばを受け入れていきましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 9 Grace given to Mephibosheth
- David keeps his promise with Jonathan
After establishing his kingship, David recalled his promise with Jonathan (1 Samuel 20:15). And he wants to fulfill that promise to the descendants of Jonathan. He had not forgotten his promise with Jonathan. Certainly, there was now only with Jonathan.
So David brought in the son of Jonathan, Mephibosheth, into the royal palace. He was only five years old when his father Jonathan and his grandfather King Saul died miserably. When his nanny tried to escape with him, she inadvertently dropped him, which caused his legs to be crippled. The Mephibosheth was now at the house of Makil, the son of Ammiel in Lo Debar. Lo Debar is a town in the Gilead region on the eastern side of the Jordan River, and it is believed that it was actually the Devil near the southern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Makil was a person who lived there and provided housing for the survivors of the Saul family. He later appeared as a helper when David was chased by Abshalom and was in trouble, but Mephibosheth was also hidden by the praiseworthy person. What was his feeling when he was summoned by David, who lived far away from Jerusalem in a quiet hiding place? He must have been afraid to think about David’s belly. But David wanted to give him grace.
- Happiness of Mephibosheth due to Jonathan’s achievements
This story tells a spiritual lesson. If one looks back on his life honestly, one might think that he wasted the gift given to God, wasted all his money, and even walked hostile to God. Probably. People sometimes wonder what kind of blessing God will have in a life that can only be marked with such a cross. So let’s take a look at what David said to Mephibosheth. “Don’t be afraid. For I will surely show you kindness for sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” Mephibosheth was happy because of his unknown relationship with his father, Jonathan and David. Similarly, if we are happy in God, it is not due to our humanity or any achievement. It is just because of the relationship between God and Jesus Christ. So even if you think of yourself as “a dead dog” like Mephibosheth, you must never reject the blessings that God has offered for Jesus. God blesses you because it has nothing to do with what you are now.
- Grace of Mephibosheth
When Mephibosheth accepted David’s invitation, he was treated as a son of David and began to eat at the king’s table. Until then, he lived quietly in the shadows, but he was to regain his grandfather’s estate, which he should have inherited, and his royal status. Moreover, Saul’s servant Ziba, who is astute, is ordered to work for him.
Mephibosheth remained lame, but his life after him in response to David’s calling was quite different. And he should have realized. This happiness of himself is entirely due to his father, Jonathan. And because he accepted the offer. Similarly, if we respond to God’s calling, the grace of Christ will be abundantly poured.
